He's got one.

It may only make sense to him, but he'll come up with something. He may even be able to justify a #1 position in his brain.

Power rankings:

Mercer and Wofford are 2-0. Gimme the Terriers on top with a top-25 win under their belt. I think Chatt is good even with an 0-2 start against FBS competition. So those are the top-3.

The rest of us are tied for last. I guess you could say tied for 4th, but after this weekend we need to see a whole lot from the majority of the league. WCU is definitely staring 0-4 in the face if we can’t wake up and find some offense or the ability to cover a good WR.

Massey is slowly getting better. They had us only beating VMI and Citadel to start the year, i think. And since we won our last 2, they’ve flipped on ETSU. But we’re still hovering around 30% or worse for the other FCS games.

Anyway, W&M scares me a little more than Richmond, because the tribe is a little bit more secure in their identity than the spiders, and Wofford is a little beat up on defense after the Richmond game. I’m actually more confident we will move the ball saturday, because W&M has had some issues at times on defense the last couple games, as they lost something like 5 all conference defenders from last season. The tribe shut us down last year, but our offense is clearly better under Odom. It’s also the first home game.

If Wofford heals up and stops the run, we’ll be in good shape, and if we move the chains early and put the tribe behind and make them play catch up, we’ll be in even better shape.

Again: I look at William and Mary’s offense fondly because it reminds me of wofford’s under Conklin before he caught pandemic politics brainworms, but it has its shortcomings and it wasn’t by any means elite last year, which the loss of Yoder by itself shouldn’t have degraded them to. I think their offense will be better this year, and has oodles of experience, but *having seen that style of play for so long* I’m just skeptical it can put up a super amount of points against a good defense (which i think wofford has) especially when the opposing offense is competent (which it is this year when it wasn’t last year)

As a homer, i think we will win. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if the physicality of the last couple weeks caught up to us. If we go into the bye and socon schedule at 2-1, that’s not too bad. But hoping we get the W. This will be a big game for playoff implications.

So you're saying that SCIENCE told you that Chattanooga is beating Mercer this weekend? :D I like it!

Honestly I'd take a SoCon Championship in a 3 way tie if you offered it to me today. I imagine Mercer and Furman would do the same.

Y’know…sometimes we can accept the broader context of the sciences, but reject and/or redefine components within.

For example, we can all accept that physics is a “thing,” but we might look closer and decide to reject Aristotelian Physics in favor of Newtonian Physics. Right?

As noted previously, FUBeAR is heavily ciphering to produce his Power Rankings this week (coming soon!) and he finds Massey’s work highly instructive in that endeavor.

It's hard to tell where everyone in the SoCon should sit. I was really high on Western - but they didn't look good on Saturday. I was also high on Furman, but lost to a CSU team I though they should beat. I wasn't super high on Wofford, but they looked pretty good in what was a great SoCon win this weekend.

My gut tells me the sky is not falling for the Catamounts or Paladins - probably just one -off poor performances, but what to do with Wofford. And of course I think Chattanooga and Mercer are both good as well.

I'm also a Virgina resident. I spent a weekend in Williamsburg last year and there's literally no cell service if you have Verizon. Haven't had anything like it since I went out west and was in a literal desert (and I'm not even one of those people who's glued to their phone). A couple years ago my fiance went down there, trying to do a little weekend getaway, but had nothing after a day. We went again last year for the game, and there's a nice little town and colonial village but there's really nothing to do after a couple hours.

I lived in RVA for about a year, and give me Carytown, the fan, and Henrico County any day of the week. I won't mess around in the east and south side of Richmond, but RVA's vibe is pretty good.

Of course, as a snobby NoVa resident, I have to say Arlington and Alexandria are the best of them all.

I think there's a long way to go in the season, but I think the conclusion that Wofford/Mercer/Chatt are at the top of the socon are probably true.

Storylines for each team, no particular order
1) Chatt: 0-2, so not much to reward them with but at the same time, played solid against GSU
2) Mercer: can't really ding them on anything. They have an efficient QB, and the defense seems solid, but at the same time they really haven't played anyone good through 2 weeks
3) Wofford: Probably the team with the most solid data behind them. Overall, just looking really solid, but with a couple kinks. But also, do you trust a team that went 5-12 the last 1.5 seasons to keep stacking wins?
4) Furman: offensive woes galore. I think I read somewhere they had 9 yards rushing in the second half against CSU and 4 turnovers. Not great QB play.
5) WCU: They lost of their OC and star running back may be impactful, with 3 straight losses going back to last, including 2 absolute head-scratchers against FCS competition.
6) Citadel: Look, they aren't a team that an average or good team can just roll the ball out there and win, but they were very close to being 0-2. I don't think anyone expects them to be elite, but with the socon in flux this year, each game will probably be watchable
7) VMI: pain, just pain. The portal is offsetting any gains Rocco or Wachenheim can make
8) Samford. I think Hatcher just isn't a good head coach at this level. He'd probably be an elite OC, but at this point it seems like he shuffling DCs and defensive players from the portal every year. There's nothing wrong with that! Especially if it works, but it really hasn't worked last year and I don't think it'll work this year. I don't think their current QB is like Oladokun who was a true dual threat, and he's the first QB they've had in a while who wasn't an FBS-ish transfer.
9) ETSU - I can't really make any sort of judgment given they played two teams that weren't on each other's level. And I don't think we'll learn anything when NDSU headlocks them until they pass out this weekend either.

Since I moved my dad down here to live with me in 20, I miss my trips up into the valley. He lived between Staunton and Waynesboro out in the country. Beautiful spot. Always gave me an excuse to go to our games at VMI. I've been to most of the spots you mentioned. I never liked Richmond much, but I don't like any congested city location. Even Charleston has lost most of its charm for me.

Flipped?

Massey projects Furman and Chattanooga will finish with the exact same SoCon & Overall records and he has Furman defeating Chatt head-to-head. Listing Furman ahead of Chatt is the ONLY logical way to do it.

And before you comment, Mercer, was part of that 3-way ‘round-robin,’ and will have, per Massey, the same SoCon record as, but the Bears will have, per Massey, a better Overall Record than Furman & Chatt, which merits listing them ahead of the other 2 considering all factors together.

Welcome to my everyday existence. I get a bar, on Verizon, if I stand on one leg and hop in the high spot on my driveway. I love it. Yeah, I got wifi, when the internet doesn't burp and I don't walk around much. It's why I have a hard land line. Hey it's all what people want. Welp…within FUBeAR’s Table, there are Massey’s current “Ratings” (with corresponding FCS Rankings), current metrics for however Massey defines “Power” (with corresponding FCS Rankings), and Massey’s current projected records (SoCon & Overall outcomes).

FUBeAR chose to present his table focusing on projected outcomes, feeling that’s what we’re here for - who wins / who loses.

Please feel free to create your own table(s) and sort/present using your preferred area(s) of emphasis.

Massey’s current projection for Furman @ The Citadel is a Paladin victory by the score of 31-14.

Massey doesn’t mention anything about “torn ass under.” Sounds like something that happens frequently in bellhop dorms.

I'll give you one or two spots in RVA but the vast majority of the city is stuck either trying desperately to be some bourgeois version of Charlottesville or trying desperately not to be some stateside version of an Iraqi green zone. The rest is just varying extensions of the Midlothian strip mall experience.

A few notes for your consideration concerning your storyline on Samford. Hatcher is in his 10th year and this is his 4th DC. Last year's DC left for Troy (check his bio, 2 years at one place was about his norm) as an Assistant and the one before that, admittedly a bad hire, was a former D-2 DC who wasn't ready for FCS. I really like our new guy. We start one new xfer on offense and 2 on defense, so this is not a totally new xfer laden team. I wonder what it takes in your vocabulary to define a true dual-threat QB? I give a couple of examples: In our opener vs UWG, which I admit we were not ready for, Quincy Crittendon threw for 307 yards and ran for 90 yards with 2 TDs. Going back to our 2022 season First Round Playoffs Game vs SELA he threw for 314yds and ran for 114. In his career he has thrown 144 passes with a grand total of ONE interception. I think "Q" can certainly be termed a dual-threat QB. I don't know what an FBS-ish QB means, but Hodges, Welch, Hiers, and now Crittendon were never FBS.

Put it this way, I think it was 2019 and Oladokun led the country for at least a little bit in passing efficiency. However, upon looking at the actual stats, he seems better, as CO only averaged about 200 yards per game in the air and his completion percentage was roughly the same.

Regardless, Q, in spite of throwing more passes has less yardage than DJ smith and Amari Odom, and maybe a couple others. And it’s a small sample of only a couple games. And comparing him to Hiers, Hodges, and Welch, his completion percentage was wayyyy lower. I’ll be honest, I think Hiers and Hodges are in a league of their own among those named, and when I was talking about transfer QBs, i thought Hodges did a redshirt year somewhere and though CO was better than he actually was through the air. So my point was wrong. I thought it pointed to a pattern that Hatcher does better taking a QB from the portal that isn’t totally green, but I guess that’s not true.

Regardless, I think Q is more like an Oladokun style QB, but that’s not necessarily optimal for Hatcher’s offense, as the bulldogs were 9-10 during his time there. It was COVID, sure, but if I’m Samford i would want more of a field general leading the offense than a scrambler. That offense hums when your QB has a completion percentage at or above 70, but if it’s below 65 (which is typically great for any other system) it’s a little more dicey.

I could be wrong about all of that though!

Week 3 Rankings
I’m throwing out my preseason ranking bias. We knew nothing about the SoCon that saw portal activity +\- and coaching changes. It’s clear inconsistency might be the theme this year. Rankings are based on current W/L and not predictive of the whole season. Expected vast changes each week until consistency returns.

Quincy Crittendon is going to give some DCs fits in game planning this year. The Samford offense will adjust to his running ability and take advantage of it. That's my hope anyhow.

Btw my power rankings:

1) Wofford - best resume at this point, period, even if GW/Richmond aren’t playoff teams, they’re 2 wins, and they’re better than Mercer’s
2) Mercer - two wins, but it’s hard to parse much from them
3) Chattanooga - no wins, but a lot to like from the GSU game
4) ETSU - honestly, at this point, everything is a crap shoot. Maybe they should be lower?
5) Citadel - they seem to have more to work with than Furman or VMI, but i only have them over western and samford because they won a game
6) Western - i think they have lots to work with but no wins yet. Elon may be a must win, as i don’t see this team beating montana, and an 0-4 start would be demoralizing. If they can’t produce offense in this one, their season will be on life support.
7) Samford - I think they’ll either climb these ratings and then lose to someone they should or just middle around all year. This is Hatcher after all.
8) Furman - They have a lot to rebuild.
9) VMI - pain.

Actually no, LOL! That's one reason I said, "I hope." But from what I have seen in practice, I know that he plans to use Quincy in lots of QB running plays.

If FUBeAR decides to accept Massey’s premise that the Mocs defeat the Bears (he projects a 27-25 Chatt win), then he will have Chatt slotted as Massey projects - tied for #1 with Mercer & Furman. If, however, FUBeAR decides to reject this piece of Massey’s overall evaluation, he will drop the SnakeBirds to #3.

The problem is the table. Citadel folks prefer charts; either bar or pie will do.

North Greenville - 24
The Citadel – 27 – This game will be closer than The Citadel fans want, but I still think they escape with a win at home.

Stetson - 10
Furman -38 – The Paladins didn’t look good last week – nothing like a Pioneer team to help you right the ship.

VMI – 0
Georgia Tech – 41 – GT by as many as they want.

NDSU – 35 – Glad to see a SoCon team playing the Bison, but ultimately the Bison roll.
ETSU - 13

William and Mary - 21
Wofford – 24 – OK, last week I would have picked the tribe, but the win over Richmond has me high on the Terriers.

Mercer - 24
Chattanooga – 27 – The Mocs win what should be a good ‘ole SoCon slugfest.

Western Carolina – 21 – Going with my gut here – I was high on WCU until they laid an egg last week, but I still think this is a pretty good football team, and they represent the SoCon this weekend.
Elon - 20

Alabama State - 17
Samford – 28 – Week one was ugly, and you never know what to expect with Hatcher, but I think the Bulldogs win this game at home by a few scores.

FUBeAR will take some of that WCU +thumping action as well.

Hard to recall a softer Team ever coming into Paladin Stadium than that Elon Team FUBeAR saw in the ‘22 Playoffs. Difficult to imagine they’ve been able to shed that kind of culture in a season + 2 games.

Elon is a wild card. They typically get the shorter end of the stick when they play SoCon teams, unless the socon team is really bad. That's not to say that the socon dominates them in all other circumstances, but a lot of times they just end up losing by 4 or something.

So Western fans will hate me for saying this, but we've transitioned in the last 10 years from Western being the lovable loser all the time, to lovable loser 1/3 of the time, Hollywood "will they make the playoffs and then blowing it" the other times. I don't think we've transitioned away from that yet.

Just want to reiterate I pull for Western when they don't play wofford!

The thing with Elon that's kind of funny is that when they were in the socon and successful, they were very much an air raid/West Coast team, which wasn't the mold. But since they've moved to the CAA, they play more like the ancestoral socon team they never were (running the ball, tough defense). Like, regardless of how a CAA team did a season before, the 3 teams I wouldn't want to play are Richmond, Elon, and W&M just because they all emit the same vibe and probably culturally (for whatever reason) value the run game and stopping the run more.

Not saying a good WR can't excel against WCU, but I can tell you I will be happier seeing our 5'11" type of DBs going against a 6'1" rather than a 6'5" WR like we saw last week.

Coach Wright is certainly down to business and old school and know the interviews and publicity aspect are not the parts of the job he enjoys. I figured you would appreciate an old school hard nosed coach FUBeAR. I mean CRW and Nick Saban have similar demeanors - only without Saban's 5 star recruits.

https://gomocs.com/news/2024/9/10/football-tuesday-presser-ahead-of-saturdays-home-opener.aspxLOL - FUBeAR never LIKED Coach Sheridan for one single second of the 5 years FUBeAR played for and of the 2 years FUBeAR Coached under him at Furman.

OTOH, FUBeAR LOVED Coach Sheridan for every single one of those seconds that he didn’t LIKE Coach Sheridan…except for the (too numerous) seconds when FUBeAR HATED him because of FUBeAR’s own abundant shortcomings (except for 1 play of GoalLine practice in the ‘82 pre-season, but that’s a long(er) story).

And, as the years passed, it was ALL LOVE.

Sure did miss seeing him at a few Furman games last season. #RIP

THAT said, FUBeAR thinks we need to see Coach Wright get that Career Winning % above .555 and win at least 1 SoCon Championship (he’s 0 for 5 seasons; Coach Sheridan won it in his 1st season, 5 in his 1st 6 seasons, and 6 in his 8 total seasons at FU…and FUBeAR’s participation in 4 of those as a Player PROVES Coach Sheridan did it with -2 Star Recruits or worse) before we use Coach Wright’s name in the same sentence, paragraph, page, chapter, book, or set of volumes with Coach Saban’s…Right?

Ramblin' Wreck

Mercer
Elon
Samford

Look, I am as hard on my Furman guys as ANYONE... they call me "negative" on our gopaladins board ... and you have to allow that in a TRUE FRESHMAN QB with a totally rebuilt OL with FOUR TURNOVERS - that's the kicker - its almost amazing we were in the game. Look, we stunk. BAD. Hear me there. But there was an article or podcast that every game at -2 turnover RATIO (not 2 turnovers, a - 2 RATIO) has an 82% chance of the +2 team winning. By +4 turnover you have a 95% chance of winning. IE, it should take an FBS team vs FCS to overcome a negative 4 turnover ratio. And yet, there we were wtih the ball to win at the end.

I can tell you from that right there - being objective - that CSU is NOT GOOD. And thus neither is Citadel etc. IE our ceiling is higher.

Put another way, I think Wofford had a PLUS FOUR TURNOVER RATIO (again - ratio!) vs William and Mary and barely won. So I don't think Wofford is that good. Now, one question is does a team CREATE those turnovers with sacks etc. Or did the other team just drop the ball. With our TRUE Fr Qb we literally just dropped the ball in the backfield. Just dropped it.

Again, we may finish 4-7 or whatever but we are one of only three teams to finish with 10 wins the past two years - SDSU, NDSU, Furman. That's it. For a school that - as our coach said - can hardly take a transfer due to academics that is amazing.

Anyway, may be a big rebuilding year. OK. Tough but it happens. And again, I try to be objective, if it is 3-8 or 4-7 our coaches have to take some blame because you are supposed to recruit to where the dips aren't that bad. However, we may find we are playing a True Fr QB for the future over our RS-Soph who started the game. If so we are playing for the future. The shame of that is it pretty much kills your Seniors of this year ... they will be gone by the time the OL and QB improve.

One other point I will make - I haven't read this whole thread... is we lost ALL FOUR of our DBs Safeties... that's rare. Usually at least one returns. And then two probable starters who were next up for this year were lost pre-season for the entire year. So we are starting a FR, FR, SO, SO at our CB positions. that's brutal

Yeah I don't keep up like I used to but that was very very very disappointing

It was. One difference in say, Furman, vs the last year or two of Wofford 😔 or Citadel (😔winless !) is we have the same coaches who took us to to elite eight quarterfinals at Montana and TOP 5 /10 rankings on the sideline. I just mean continuity of coaching is there

We may only win 4 or so games but you have to think we will be better next year. Hendrix is a KNOWN QUANTITY. known to be very very strong. And that’s probably why we were picked second in conference and top 15 nationally with only SIX returning starters. Six. I recall “cats” or someone said preseason “he deserves national coach of year if he can come in even 2nd in SoCon with 6 guys back

Agreed. Sure. But This isn’t about Furman that year vs maybe this year. It’s that we were ranked 11th and they were 12th and got their AZZ kicked. They did. I was there. 31-6. That’s basically the Duke game or better of 26-3 in week one of this year in their money game FBS ACC Duke v Elon. As opposed to FCS Furman v FCS Elon 12th vs 11th. Just saying when a SoCon is good Elon can’t hang usually. Usually

THAT said, FUBeAR thinks we need to see Coach Wright get that Career Winning % above .555 and win at least 1 SoCon Championship before we use Coach Wright’s name in the same sentence, paragraph, page, chapter, book, or set of volumes with Coach Saban’s…Right?

Maybe I'm comparing CRW to Saban's Michigan State Days (58%)!

I watched that game and have commented on it many times and yes, Elon got manhandled. That game was the reason I supported FuBeaR last year on his mission to get Furman on the map and in the minds of biased MVFC and Big sky fans. Now I wasn't ready to put Furman up on the Mount Rushmore of the 4 FCS powers yet but they were certainly better than the Idaho's, Sac States and the North Dakota, S Illinois type teams... yes, I realize this was last year and this year is looking very different

I know the game was on flo sports, but you can look at the box score and see we were up 2 touchdowns with 8 minutes left. Considering we scored 23 unanswered and went on a 26-7 run after offense couldn’t get a first down in the first 20 minutes, i would not consider that barely winning. I’m of the school of thought that turnovers are unpredictable because of their randomness, but 1 of those picks was on richmond’s last offensive play, and 2 of them were our DBs making a great read/baiting the QB. I would call those forced. And the other 2 picks came when wofford was already up.

We held 2 QBs whose completion percentage hovered around 70% to less than 50%, no touchdowns, minimal yardage, and 4 picks. I’m skeptical of how good richmond is, but they did win the CAA last year technically, and we just took away a big part of their identity.

Doubt this Wofford team, especially on defense, at your peril.

hey socon fans, if you want to be pissed, remember that 7 socon teams have a playoff win in the last decade, 4 have multiple wins, 8 have appearances, and like 2/3 of our playoff losses were in the quarterfinals, against a dakota state, or to a current FBS team. All the while probably having less seeds and home games than the other conferences.

But we’re not on the level of the CAA because something something semifinals.

Maybe I'm comparing CRW to Saban's Michigan State Days (58%)!
Fair enough ….

….but you’ll then need to use a modifier such as “Eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Infant, don't even know a word yet, just a little infant, so cuddly, but still omnipotent Coach Saban” to provide appropriate context.

VMI notes (like we need bad news for Ga. Tech). QB Shannon has a shoulder injury (took a hard helmet to shoulder hit early in fourth qtr vs Bucknell), Wilson will start with Frosh Crump as back up. 5th year seniors Summey (SS) and Johnson (WR) had season-ending knee injuries vs. Bucknell.

PICKS ARE IN!

As previously noted, FUBeAR felt it appropriate to really put in the work this week to derive the most perfect Power Rankings he could ascertain.

Being completely transparent, there are a few anecdotal data points which led FUBeAR to seriously consider dropping Furman from a #1 spot. The Paladins have been underwhelming in both of their outings, but, after consulting with multiple SoCon Coaches, Media, Players, and Players’ families from several Teams since Saturday, along with 2 different AI platforms, it became apparent to FUBeAR that following SCIENCE was really his only option. So, allowing Mr. Massey to ‘take the wheel,’ FUBeAR will respect his data and years of experience to keep Furman at #1. A poor showing against Stetson at home this week could, possibly, lead to the Paladins dropping a spot or 2 in next week’s Rankings.

Mercer, with FUBeAR’s ongoing opinion confirmed by Massey’s projections, also remains at #1.

Chatt is in a unique position in FUBeAR’s thought process this week. See note* below for more details.

While FUBeAR might like to shuffle a few Teams below the top 3 - Samford lower, ETSU & Wofford a tad higher; maybe swap VMI & CIT, he’ll continue with his “TRUST SCIENCE” theme for this week and leave them as Mr. Massey projects.

*This rank was, initially, contingent upon FUBeAR’s pick in the Mercer @ Chatt matchup this week. Once FUBeAR completed his deliberations on this game, he finalized this Ranking for the Mocs. As FUBeAR decided to reject the piece of Massey’s overall evaluation that has Chatt defeating Mercer by 2, he has dropped the SnakeBirds to #3. Still questionable to rank UTC that high, with FUBeAR’s projected 0-3 start, but 2 FBS losses and a loss to a #1 SoCon Team must be considered relatively. They have a good Football Team.

^FUBeAR is not prepared, at this time, to accept Massey’s projection that Furman will lose to Mercer. As such, FUBeAR has not changed any of Massey’s projections, but is noting his deferral of projecting this end of regular season game, at this time.

North Greenville
The Citadel
The Crusaders, oh wait, Trailblazers, should have beaten Charleston Southern last season and this new & improved bellhop squad barely edged out those Bucs. FUBeAR was very disappointed that the Northern I-26 Bulldogs came into half-a-stadium and beat the bellhops last week. He wanted an undefeated CIT Team to come to Maconga next week for a matchup of undefeated, ranked SoCon Teams, as FUBeAR will be in attendance (Lord willing). But the baby blue toy soldiers failed to hold up their end of the deal. Oh well, 2-1 ain’t bad.

CIT 21 - NGU 17

9/14
Stetson
Furman
The Paladins are wounded with their 0-2 record, but a young, reloading Team will encounter a speed bump or 2 along the way. But a QB change, like a new broom, sweeps clean. FUBeAR just read that FU’s True Freshman wunderkind QB is a combination of Ingle Martin, Frankie DeBusk, and, yep, Patrick Mahomes. You may not know those names, but FUBeAR is told they are/were pretty fair QB’s. The Stetson Hatters’ campus is just up the road from Trey Hedden’s hometown, so expect him to show out BIG for the hometown folks in his 1st college start. Paladins doff the Hatters.

Furman 77 - Stetson 0

9/14
VMI
Georgia Tech
Pray for 🦘’s

GT 223 - VMI 0

9/14
North Dakota State
ETSU
NDSU’s Offense typically plays in a silent cave. ETSU’s Visitors stand are ON TOP of the Visitor’s bench. ETSU has an HBCU-sized and LOUD band and a large student body. The band and the students sit behind the Visitors bench. IF those folks are on their game and the city of JC turns out, the bizuns are gonna think they’ve gone back to Missoula and won’t know if they’re supposed to run A-Gap Power or change the AAAA batteries in their watches. Tre Lamb is gonna SHOCK THE WORLD someday. That day is this Saturday!

ETSU 31 - NDSU 29 (by an intercepted 2-pt conversion pass in the 2nd OT)

9/14
William & Mary
Wofford
Bill & that Beeyatch should have been reported to the SPCA and PETA for abusing those poor cute baby kangaroos a couple of weeks ago, but the BeachChickens took out some 3-score animal kingdom vengeance on TheFamilialGroup last week, BUT this week, B&theB have to travel back to the Sandlapper State and face the wrath of some AngrySlightlyLessThanHugeDogs. Wofford is BACK BABY! They have a Payton Award Candidate at QB and are snarling on Defense. If the Green & Gold SocialDivison has only a small measure of the CAA softness that the Formerly Fightin’ Former Christians brought to the SC Upstate a couple of years ago, they go back to BillsBurg as a bunch of unrelated individuals. They do and the Black & White Dogs howl in victory!

Wofford 20 - W&M 13

9/14
Mercer
Chattanooga
Gonna keep it brief. This will be a slugfest of 2 Ranked SoCon Teams. They don’t like each other. Each feels the other has ‘stolen’ games from them in past years, dating back to a bunch of mostly Mercer walk-on’s whippin’ #3 Chatt in 2015. QB Acidophilus and WR Phillips get theirs, but Mercer shuts down the SnakeBirds ground game. Bears newbies - QB D Smith, RB McGee, and WR Parsons, along with 2nd year WR B Smith announce their arrival to the SoCon. Bears win on another Moc Special Teams malfunction.

Mercer 28 - Chattanooga 27

9/14
WCU
Elon
WCU was AWFUL last week. No, they were worse than awful! When your only TD comes on YOUR OWN blocked FG AND you hang your hat (not a Stetson) on having a high flying Offense, heads must roll. FUBeAR understands Coach (Kerwin) Bell guillotined his OC in the locker room after the game Saturday and has taken control of the PurpleCats’ O. The felines from Cullowhee will hope the Formerly Fightin’ Former Christians will find forgiveness in their hearts for what the Catamounts are going to do to them. Last week was a fluke. This week wil be the whole whale of a win for WCU.

WCU 52 - Elon 28

9/14
Alabama State
Samford
The HaplessHomewoodHounds open at home in front of at least 257 (Samford) fans this week. They mad. Alabama State Hornets present a challenge, but Coach Hatcher surely knows he doesn’t want to sit on another loss and then head over to Travelers Rest to face the SoCon Champs in 2 weeks with a BIG FAT DOUGHNUT in his Win column. Samford QB Quincy Crittendon runs for a 25 yard TD in the 2nd OT to close out a valiant effort by the Montgomery Stingers.

Samford 50 - Alabama State 44

FUB, 257 in attendance at Samford? Don't forget that ASU is bringing a band that I'm sure has that many or more. I just hope that they don't expect to see a ''Battle of the Bands'' since our "Mighty Marching Dozen" hopefully won't even perform.

Meant 257 Samford Fans. Apologies for the ambiguity.

Since that’s at the bottom of the list, FUBeAR, optimistically, thanks you for reading all of his picks.

And…will, of course, assume your lack of commentary on those picks connotes tacit agreement. THANKS!

Hen, good deal. Yeah probably a rough year for us here.

TRUE FRESHMAN QB now listed as starter over our supposed R-SO …. So elder guy must not have separated himself despite experience…

ONE OL with good experience

FRESHMAN CENTER hiking to a true FR qb !!!

all FOUR DBs gone. Some graduate some transfer. Usually you keep one or two…. Then next two up injured for the year

probably best unit ( most returning experience so no oddity) is defensive front?

Terrier, agree but here is another FACT. Am I wrong or does CAA have freakin SIXTEEN FOOTBALL TEAMS? Is that right? Good grief

thats like cheating. 1). Some years team a never plays team b or c so you avoid the other good teams.
2). Just numerically the SoCon basically has HALF (9) that many teams so you basically have twice as many shots at having a good team in CAA. Almost seems FCS should cap a conference at 12 teams or so

So…near unanimous that Chatt is gonna stomp a mud hole in Mercer tomorrow, huh?

(FUBeAR almost drowned one time in a mud hole in Chatt’s Chamberlain Field during a game played amidst a raging, monsoon-like thunderstorm … Scout’s honor.)

No faith in the 2-0 Bears it seems.

To be fully honest, FUBeAR is not sure Mercer’s 2024 Team has gelled enough yet to win this game. The Mocs should be elated that they are getting the Bears while they still have some of their Cub Coat on ‘em.

A few specifics behind that…

QB - Mercer’s new QB is talented, but he’s raw. Not sure of the level of HS Coaching in Greenwood, MS and he recently said in an interview that he didn’t have a QB Coach in HS or in JUCO. That shows sometimes. But, he seems cucumber cool back there, gets the ball out very quickly with very good (not yet great) accuracy, seems to (usually) make good reads in their RPO game, has abundant and excellent targets in Mercer’s many WR’s and RB’s (who all seem to make great effort in their blocking - FUBeAR LOVES to see that), seems to be pretty good (usually) on handling the ball and making reads in Mercer’s ground game, and is a definite threat with his legs. By Game 7, he may be All SoCon caliber…but in Game 3 and his 1st SoCon game, he’s gonna have to grow some … quickly … or Chatt will be up 24-0 early in the 2nd quarter, as they were last time the Bears visited Finley.

- OL - Mercer’s Transfer OT Xavier Jennings (FUBeAR likes SoCon Players named Jennings) with P4 offers has not played yet. FUBeAR assumes he’s been injured, but his visage was featured in a Mercer graphic about this game, so FUBeAR semi-infers that he’s ready to play. If he does, Mercer’s OL may be revamped with multiple position changes from the 1st 2 games. The SWAC Digital Network flashed a Starting Offense Lineup graphic for the “Mercer Bulldogs” last week, perhaps foreshadowing the Bears’ aspirational Starters, showing Jennings starting at LT, the so-far LT moving to RT, and the so-far RT (a Youngstown State transfer) moving in to RG (replacing a True FR that has started the 1st 2 games). Theoretically, that should be a much stronger OL, but that True FR has played well and ‘gelling’ on the OL is critical. So, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

- DB’s - Mercer’s starting All SoCon Sr Safety, Myles Redding, was (rightfully) ejected for targeting on the 2nd play of the 2nd half against Bethune-Cookman. So, he’s out for the 1st half tomorrow. Mercer’s D already had some big holes to fill in the Secondary with the graduation of All SoCon Lance Wise and Richie Coffey. Without, probably, their best DB, memories of that ‘go down 24-0 dang quickly’ thing comes rushing back into FUBeAR’s very little brain.

- Kickoffs…not sure what Mercer is doing there, but the deepest kicks go to about the 15 yard line and they are right down the middle of the field. Nobody, past middle school, does that these days. Hopefully they’ve been ’sandbagging.’ True, the Mocs are usually a calamity on Special Teams, but they always seems to have dangerous Returners. Guess Mercer could mitigate this issue with only Kicking Off once, but that doesn’t seem like a good solution.

- Penalties - While we may have seen quite a bit of SWAC Homecookin’ last week, the Bears were indicted 15 times and fined 134 yards. We can probably expect that same kind of Homecookin’ in the Scenic City, but Mercer was also hit with 8 charges for 75 yards at home in their opener vs. PC. Other than turnovers, the next best way to ensure a Team goes down 24-0 early in the 2nd Quarter is for them to incur a bunch of drive-killing penalties on O and drive-extending ones on D.

Not coming off the 28-27 Bears WIN prediculation, but FUBeAR is a bit less confident in that than he is GT torturing the Kangaroos for 223.

What’s chattanooga bring back? All of this + the new coaching staff screams “young team” and the 2 early wins really don’t tell us much. I’m inclined to think Mercer will be at the least the middle of the socon this season (so 7-5ish at least), but i can’t take anything from the PC game, and if i’’m honestly Bethune-Cookman is so bad on offense the last few years, i’m inclined to take less from that one too.

I think it’s possible Mercer has some growing pains in the first half of the season, but with the way their schedule and conference is shaping up, I could see them getting into another gear in the second half of the season and pushing for the playoffs.

But right now, this makes me feel better about Wofford personnel-wise, as we are probably one of the few teams in the conference that has super seniors who were here 3 years ago. Everyone else seems to have peaked with that demo last year, but few wanted transfers from a program that won 7 games since covid. And Conklin ran off lots of players circa 2021-2022, so we’re also not absolutely overloaded with seniors and 5th years like Furman was last year.

The exciting thing for Wofford is our redshirt freshman QB 2+ running backs with multiple years of eligibility, and all the lowerclassmen that stepped into the game against Richmond when we were a little beat up. Even though we made mistakes the last couple weeks, we know our best personnel because of experience and we’re just a better team this year.

Other than 2 a$$-whippin’ from FUBeAR’s Paladins, QB Acidophilus, and WR Phillips, FUBeAR dunno what Chatt is bringing with them from 2023.

The Team, apparently, stayed in Chatt or in the Knoxville Sorority Houses during their UTenn debacle and FUBeAR just didn’t pay much attention to their game at Ted Turner Field.

Faceless opponent and all that, y’know.

Also - on Mercer’s Coaching Staff - the transition has been as seamless as anyone could hope. Mike Jacobs also followed Drew Cronic at Lenoir-Rhyne, so there’s a ‘been there, done that’ level of comfort there. Lenoir-Rhyne was 13-1 in Cronic’s final year there and Jacobs was 11-3 in his 1st 14 games in Hickory and 13-2 in his final year, making the post-season in 3 of 4 seasons; D2 Semi-Finals last year. Very few portal losses for Mercer, maybe 0 that weren’t viewed as Addition thru Subtraction.

Really not so much ‘young,’ as they are NEW (OL, WR, RB), but PROVEN elsewhere, except the QB. He’s not young age-wise, just not experienced at this level or quite ‘buffed & polished’ yet. How he responds to Coaching and develops, barring injury, will be a HUGE factor in if, and how fast, Mercer becomes a SoCon contendah…or not.

Finally watched the Furman-CSU game and i’ll be honest…Carson Jones was done dirty in my humble opinion. Furman’s offense isn’t bad, but there were an egregious amount of dropped balls, wrong routes run, and just not great situational awareness (in my layman’s opinion) by the Furman receivers. The difference between Jones and the freshman was the latter got more playing time and so the receivers made plays to obfuscate a mediocre game. He made freshman mistakes, including some turnovers i’m not sure Jones would have made.

But hey, the Furman coaches know more about football than me, so I could be off base.

Other notes: Furman’s run game will still be good, but probably not as dominant as the last couple years if the dins can’t figure out their passing game. CSU was able to stop them by run blitzing, and it was high risk/high reward.

The defense, at the moment, has taken a step back, which is unsurprising, given all they lost from a generational defense last year. Furman was basically aiming to stop the run and didn’t respect the CSU pass game. CSU’s QB made them pay. Overall, I don’t think the paladin defense will be bad this year, but probably just average. I think they let up like 14 points per game in socon competition, and they’ve already let up 24 against CSU, who I think will have a solid identity going forward. I look around the conference and see teams like Mercer, Chatt, Samford, Wofford, and ETSU, and i think those teams will have a balance and maybe passing ability that will be hard for the paladins to stop.

It’s only game one though, and I expect this young Furman team to get better. Hot take: they win if Jones is taking the snaps for 4 quarters.

Not that it really matters, but it actually does.

We got a first down to the about our 26. We threw a 50 yd pass on first down. Overruled by replay as it bobbled on ground. So it's 2nd and ten. BUT NOOOO. The refs said it was 4th and 1. I went back and replayed it and there is no doubt it was a 1st and ten play. How do you screw that up?

Leave it to the SOCON refs.

So if I'm Furman, I'm sounding the alarm on offense. 0-4 and less than 100 yards of offense through the first 20 minutes. They're fine in this game, but looks bad for the socon slate.

No threat by Stetson as of yet to surpass this 10 point deficit, but the problem for Furman right now is just little mistakes that accumulate. Like, sure, on first glance they're rushing a respective 3.5 ypc and 8-10 or so passing. But the execution stats against an inferior team are what's troubling. But hey! They just scored a big TD. There's still a half left for them to prove the above analysis false.

And Richmond beating CSU 21-0 through 20 minutes, including a pick six, makes me feel good. They're shutting down CSU's run game, which makes me feel good about our so-so performance on the ground last week

Furman just hit a long pass play, but I agree. The offense by both teams in this game has been offensive. WCU was bad last week but this was down right ugly through the first 20 mins or so. Furple probably starts pulling away now.

My Dogs looked good all the way around. They did what they should have done, 54-0 final. Sure it was North Greenville, but execution was very good. Very few mistakes. I liked the discipline they showed. We will not go winless in conference play. Definitely heading in the right direction. We could have, should have been 3-0 at this point. But 2-1 to start the season is just fine.

Reign of Terrier

To be clear: Furman should win this game and nothing we are seeing is terminal. They will get better over the course of the year. But right now, they don't seem too intimidating because they are just bad at executing. Like, they don't appear to be a fundamentally unsound team (Wofford 2021/2022 for instance), and they know who their identity is, but things are off.

Thankfully stetson won't top their big plays in this one. Furman still has athletes and good coaches.

Wofford is going to be good this year. I like what I see, regardless of outcome.

William & Mary offense is going to be good on offense this year too, I think.

My hot take is Wofford has William&Mary right where we want them, but if we can’t slow down that offense better, we’ll be in trouble.

Wofford’s kryptonite is starting slow on offense and third down defense.

G-W thumping Charlotte. Makes Wofford look even better.

ETSU seriously handling NDSU. Now up 11. They were a 27 point underdog. Go Bucs.

SC St staying relatively close to GA So at the half, making our loss look not as bad. They will probably lose though, but who knows.

Wofford and WCU both holding their own.

Terrier sure. I think many Furman fans acknowledge that Carson Jones probably wins that CSU game. That ONE game. He wouldn’t drop the ball in the backfield etc - probably - as a R-Sophomore. Probably one or two less turnovers with the elder Jones at QB.

But now watch today’s game vs Stetson. Who is not the level of CSU. I allow for that. But watch that one from today. And you will see a different level of throw ability in my opinion. I think the coaches had said we are close to just going with Hedden anyway. It’s an out of conference game etc etc. The throws I saw today were different. Just watch the second quarter today where Hedden starts hitting Harris in stride with relatively rare FCS throws. Actually one of the best was a near the ground throw of about 15 yards. But watch 2nd and third quarter of Furman Stetson. Regardless Stetson just focus on the throws of Hedden.

now we neeed TWO THINGS for sure - I try to be objective. Better OL run blocking. It’s VERY inconsistent. And better DB play on the ball. We are a pass interference just waiting to happen on deep balls.

but yeah, my basic take on Furman is we just lost too many DUDES. SIX RETURNING STARTERS. SIX (by some counts seven) . We have good coaches - that’s been proven and I think is without doubt…

but it might be a 4 win year or something with growing pains. Will know a lot more in two or three weeks. Main thing is to IMPROVE.
Get better on OL mainly. Also CBs. Two deep CBs are two freshman and two sophomores. That’s scary.

One guy not getting credit here is our place kicker Ian Williams. He BETTER win special teams player of the week for conference. Gamecocks are jealous. Dude hit an easy FIFTY SEVEN YARD FG today that was good from 60+. Every kickoff in end zone i think.

Stop me if you have heard this one before, but the SoCon will beat each other up and cost at least 1 or 2 teams playoff bids because we have depth and play a true round-robin schedule.

Wofford, Citadel, and ETSU clearly are much better football teams. Furman and WCU are having growing pains from heavy losses from last year’s teams. The Paladins lost so many guys and Western lost some studs (Reid and Sincere Lee) but also key coaches (Kade Bell plus our O-line coach and I think at least 1 more). Chatty is 0-3 but tell me who wants to play them and their tough D?

Samford and VMI are at the bottom, but the Bulldogs always have a ton of talent and VMI proved last year that they will get better as the year goes on.

Mercer looks great right now and may be that one true top dog. But there are enough good teams and enough flaws in the rest of the pack that we’ll “SoCon it up” and probably have several 5-3 league records and a bunch of 7-ish win teams like we always do.

After sleeping on it, I think 2/3 of the reason we lost was defense. We weren’t fundamentally unsound or anything, I just think our scheme/strategy was really bad. W&M offense is very west coast-ish in that it cuts down on decision making by the QB and gets the ball out fast. We blitzed a lot and *as soon as the blitz came* Wilson almost instantaneously knew where to put the ball. That’s a mark of a good, smart, veteran QB, but after a certain point it’s not something they’re taking so much as we’re giving to them.

After a while, this accumulates into us not getting off the field, W&M racking up TOP and our defense was just gassed. Our offense had its worst night of the year, but we actually had more yards per play, and i think that was especially true 2/3 through the game. We were even out-rushing them to that point, but we just wore down because we couldn’t get off the field (no comment on the poor chain management by the officials in the third).

Just checked the player participation stats and Wofford DL Brandon Maina, who was beat up against Richmond and is often toted as our best player, did not play. That was probably bigger than one would think, as he is pivotal in run defense and on the drive Richmond drove last week he was gone too.

I think Yoder is probably a difference maker and the tribe missed him last year. We held them in check until that last 20 minutes. It’s almost as if wofford dared william and mary to pass, and Wilson had one of his best games. And then the Tribe could run. But again, I don’t think they run like that without Yoder. People don’t appreciate what a good “fullback” like player does in that sort of offense.

At the end of the day, William and Mary is going to be a menace this year because of that offense. They know who they are more than most teams will. They have 8 seniors starting, and really only one unknown-ish player on the OL with first-year starter. Meanwhile, though Wofford has about 5 seniors/5th years on both sides of the ball, at skill position we have more sophomores and freshman.

Overall, it sucks to lose, but I’m confident that we’ll take this loss and bye week to adjust and learn going forward. i do think there are limitations to W&M’s offense, but we didn’t have the gameplan to exploit them. I like our chances if we play again.

Last week’s ooc losses and d2 scheduling will hurt. Wofford helped the league by beating Richmond, but if we don’t finish top 4 or better (which honestly, i do feel confident that we will) it means nothing. I will also say, in 12 game year, it’s extremely stupid to play these d2 scrimmages. I know it feels good to run up the score or whatever, believe me my team has been there, but it creates a false sense of achievement. The playoff committee is weird in that they prefer 8-3 socon teams to 8-4 socon teams, in that i don’t think the latter has ever been given a bid, but a 7-4 socon team has.

We would be in a lot better shape if Furman beat CSU, ETSU hung on against NDSU (though it probably doesn’t hurt), Western beats Campbell, and citadel beats SC State or schedules someone better than NGU. Wofford didn’t need to beat W&M after beating Richmond and GW, but the Campbell/CSU losses are really bad.

If you’re a socon fan and pulling for maximal bids, you’re pulling for wofford, mercer, UTC (who can play themselves into the playoffs without the autobid even at 0-3 IMO) and maybe ETSU. No one’s outlook but maybe VMI or Samford is dire

Just looked at the stats today and one reason Wofford run defense wasn't up to par was that Brandon Maina, perhaps our best player on the team on DL didn't play. He got dinged up against Richmond (and when he went out against Richmond, the spiders scored).

What's funny about Yoder's stats were - again - we kept him relatively in check for the first 40 minutes with less than 100 yards rushing. It was huge that the refs said a third down conversation was a first round without changing the chains. W&M didn't even do a hurry up, but looked like they were "going for it." Wofford "stopped them" on what would have been the play of the game but the officials said it was first down. Absolute criminal and not the first time this year we have had chain problems for wofford. You can say it was a first down or whatever, but they didn't even measure!

I don't think it's the reason why Wofford lost, but as close as it was at the end, it could have been a 14 point swing, as W&M turned around and scored. We have to bounce back and play better, but something changed after that.

Furman guy here. Top 5 last year just lost SOOOO many dudes. Rebuilding- TRUE FR QB if that says anything. R- Freshman center hiking to true freshman QB. First road start. Heck our DBs are pretty much all freshman and sophomore

anyway is your OG back - the one that went out? Who was he … we lost a WR / TE transfer from freakin FSU (out at least until end of year) named Burrell. Also two safeties were lost pre-season. That hurts our D backfield bad

OG Bart Francois (3 yr. starter) went out. RFr Hayden Raley played well in his place.

College refs are incompetent or sketchy.

Yeah, I think the measurement/down situation was awful. Maybe it was the right call, but they didn’t change the chains or measure and had Wofford and I think W&M play the down like they thought it was fourth down. That was what was bad. Wofford thought they were getting the ball in plus territory in a tied game. Considering our run game was averaging 6ypc, it changed the outlook of the game.

I haven’t seen anything like it.
