Game notes are out for Valpo game. YSU starts everyone again, no changes. YSU is 4-0 all time against Valpo with outrageous scores against the Beacon.

Valpo lost against UNI last week while Nova beat the Guins. I look for YSU to play starters first half and play a lot of Frosh as part of their redshirt 4 game allowance second half. UNI beat Valpo 35-7 last week. Last year YSU beat Valpo 52-10.

Looking for improvement in pass game as YSU will roll in the run game. Valpo, I believe was picked near the Pioneer basement in the preseason. Expect something on the order of a 50-0 YSU win.

Checking Valpo game notes, it’s interesting to see they have finally caught up recruiting players who are tall enough and pack on weight to actually play at a D-I level. They used to be undersized. They have yet to recruit players with skill/ability for D-I however. UNI is expected to be down this year but totally dominated Valpo.

While I expect YSU to steamroll Valpo with their run game, they need to continue to develope their pass game, albeit even against a weaker opponent like Valpo. Sooner or later YSU will need a pass game to overcome overloading the box vs the run game. They should also play other QBs in case Brungard goes down and they are somewhat prepared. None of the backups have any playing time. Not a good situation.

Reality says my fears about the D are coming true . Poor pass D and we aren’t stopping the run from a Pioneer League team. This ain’t South Dakota, Illinois St,So.Illinois,etc.

Needless to say , this looks like the 5-7 team I projected them to be. Maybe worse.

Second half should be better for the D but the fears remain. Also Brungard , while a strong runner , is assuring the MVFC teams are going to load the box to stop him and King. Limited pass game assures that.

A win here today is much ado about nothing. A team picked for near the Pioneer basement preseason……ugh.

YSU D has given up 25 pts so far in the middle of the 3rd qtr. to a team picked for 10th in the Pioneer.

Forgot.. Best coach on the team is the kid setting up the Gatorade cups.

Oh, it is. I didn’t think they would be very good this year, but they could be worse than even I thought. This is the team preseason picked for 10th in the Pioneer.

But our typical YSU fans clueless as usual. Now 42-25 going into the 4th.

Thats just one part of it, Yo. Much tougher.

The second part is what I identified in the preseason. We don’t have a D for the MVFC level we must play. This D is worse than last year where we ranked high in run D categories. The pass D is similar to last year. However, we don’t have a QB to match last year and in fact, we don’t throw well at all. You are going to see the box loaded and teams will dare you to throw. We will get hit with every blitz, stunt and spy combos you can imagine. Don’t believe me ? Sit back and watch it happen.

Finally, the staff is weak , slow in making adjustments, even with a weak team like Valpo. The MVFC staffs are much more adept at making adjustments. We will beat Duquesne and lose to Pitt. Then sit back and watch what happens. It’s not going to be pretty.

Personnel, coaching, strength of schedule. Trouble ahead.

The Good
-429 yards rushing on 44 attempts... good for 9.8 yards per game.
-Got off to an outstanding 21-0 start to the game.... but..... [see The Bad and The Ugly]
-Held Valpo to just 3 points in the 2nd half so they did make some adjustments at least to shut-down the backup QB.

The Bad
-This was a game we needed to see Beau throw considerably more down field as the MVFC defenses will load up the box and shut down our rushing attack absent that passing threat. Yes he found Tomczak wide open for that 73 yard TD, but we needed to see more of him throwing passes of 15-25 yards for my liking. OC... we know the kid can run. The question is can he throw consistently?

-Because the defense was atrocious in the 2nd quarter, we also did not get considerable playing time from the backup QB's Blanc and Shannon. The way Brungard runs, he inevitably will get injured during conference play. Our coaching staff should have got these backup QB's out there in the 3rd quarter and let them throw it around a bit. Could see them build some packages for Shannon in short-yard situations to run it. He has a bigger frame than Beau and that could be useful on 3rd and 4th and short.

The Ugly
-The 2nd quarter was unacceptable by our defense. Yes Valpo changed QB's, but the lack of awareness on the DC's part to prepare for this kid, because it looked like they did not, is alarming.
-Backup QB had 82 passing yards, 128 rushing yards, and 3 TD's at half!
-We clearly have issues stopping the read option. Until we learn to stop it, I anticipate more teams using it against us.


Let's see what this coaching staff can do with Duquesne coming to town next week. On paper they are a stronger program than Valpo and obviously played us in the playoffs last year. We need to see our defense step up and it would be nice to see us throw it around a bit more next week. Sticking with 7-5, but need to see improvement on defense soon.

You are correct, Beam. Well done. We face a Duquesne team that was the heavy pick preseason to win the NEC. However while we beat them in the playoffs last year, they return many of those players while we lost many of ours. I expect to beat the Dukes but at a probable much closer game.

You are the optimist projecting 7-5. Everyone has high hopes but fail to compare talent here vs the MVFC. Missouri St should tell everyone what we face in the MVFC.

At the same time , everyone should be looking ahead as I do to next year where it looks butt ugly. Losing top RBs, most of OL and important pieces of the D. And the recruiting has been problematic and at times poor. We are in downgrade now looking to get worse next year while they continue to waste schollies on local low level talent while missing out on the Florida goldmine.

Here's the scenario as I see it: The best starting QB will play once they're a few games into MVFC play. Why? Because all the current QB can do is run, and MVFC teams will wreck the QB. The current QB will be knocked out due to injury and will never return as the starter.

Then the taller kid will get to play. I hear he has some potential. But it's all hear-say
