Sun Belt Admits Replay Error in UCA/Arky State Game

NEW ORLEANS — The Sun Belt Conference, upon review of the complete pass call with 3 seconds remaining in the Central Arkansas at Arkansas State football game, has announced an incorrect application of the replay review process.
The replay official was focused on the firm control and body part down aspects of the act of a catch and failed to evaluate the surviving the ground aspect of a catch during the review of the play in question.

The right end zone camera shows the receiver did not survive the ground, but this camera angle was not consulted by the replay official. The replay ruling should have confirmed the on-field call of an incomplete pass.

The same Sun Belt fans who complain about being screwed by P4 refs will defend this homecooking. Folks are hypocrites. That replay ref should never work again.

Yeah it's easy to place blame. But this one was fairly blatant. In all fairness, I will say our last two FBS (both P5) wins saw critical late penalties on the FBS teams. Not that the penalties helped us, but they actually hurt the FBS team's chance of coming back just in a nick of time. But they were good clear calls in any case. One was possibly a game winning TD called back. Officiating isn't a science. But the use of replay, improper use in this case, makes this one stand out. All involved should be fired.

Anyone who saw this in real time knew it was criminal to overturn the ruling on the field. There is also a gambling element to this as this game was part of SVP's Bad Beats segment. Stanford Steve even made note of the legitimacy of the overturn.

What happened Saturday night in Jonesboro was/is abhorrent. What makes it so much worse is Arky State would still have had a chance to win!! Given that dynamic only further entrenches the reality that humans wanted to control the outcome of this game.

I think the one TD reception that Tech got on us that was reviewed, but not reversed was an obvious no catch. I don't know if it could be labeled "blatant" or not, but even the announcers thought it should not have been ruled a catch. It was on the field though, an not reversed upon review. That could have very well changed the course and outcome of our game. It is what it it is though. I need to watch the one in the UCA game.

Think of the potential repercussions - UCA misses out on a playoff spot when a win would have pushed them into an at large bid AND Arkansas State qualifies for a bowl game with the minimum 6 D-I wins.

Are they also still trying to defend the call after the Sun Belt’s statement?

That’s what (some, not all) Samford Fans did, while they were celebrating the outcome with no remorse. They later celebrated ‘winning’ the SoCon Championship that season, when they were 8-0, and Furman was 7-1 with the Official’s egregious error coming in Furman’s 1 SoCon loss…to Samford. So, we’re definitely not talkin’ about practice. We’re not even talking about just a game! We’re talking about a Championship!

Condolences to UCA Bears Fans. Having defeated South Carolina during his playing days, FUBeAR knows how important taking an in-state scalp can be. They must really be stinging seeing the ArkySt fans celebrating an illegitimate win. FUBeAR, and all Furman Fans, certainly can empathize with them.

There is nothing preventing voters (and committee members) rightfully considering this, effectively, a UCA victory over an FBS program when it comes to tournament time. And since it's out of conference and doesn't have any bearing on the conference championship, as long as voters and fans see the actual truth, UCA will turn out fine.

It was a bad call and the pass was incomplete but they still had time to run another play so who knows what would have happened.
