I'm a fan of WIU football program and their time in the MVFC. They did more with less for years in the MVFC. Unfortunately, timing and funding have taken a toll. They got out of MVFC just in time.

They just announced 89 layoffs of teachers and admin, and closure of library. Enrollment is down to 6,300. Funding from state is down as well.

Props to WIU for how well the competed for as long as they did .. tougher times ahead.

Not yet verified, but another Redbird fan on our forum hears they lost some players during August camp when the 89 teacher/admin layoffs were being announced. Some of the layoffs apply this year, some next year for tenured teachers. Iff true, odds are they would have lost some of their better players if they could find a new home. Not sure what the rules are for playing this fall .. but logically they wouldn't want to use up a year of eligibility. You know players are all wondering and talking about where this goes.

Again, not yet verfified .. but this would explain the score last night.

VMI's lack of team speed showed again today, as did VMI's defensive strategy, having the DBs play 8 yards off the ball when it was 5 or 6 yards to go. Lots of missed tackles on defense, only Hunter Rice can break tackles on offense. Twice VMI had made 3rd down plays in Bucknell territory wiped out by holding calls. Allowing Bucknell to score 21 points in the first 18 minutes in 2nd half too much for VMI's offense to overcome.

Next week will be ugly, then Norfolk State will be just as tough as today.

ISU Redbirds are going back to drawing boards ... bad day at the office beating UNA 24-17. We had nearly 500 yards of offense but got just 24 points .. notably, 325 yds rushing without Mason Blakemore/King against a team who held Memphis to 26 carries and 59 yards last week. But our defense didn't show up, or maybe didn't take them seriously ... but we gave up 300 yards passing with their QB (Stanford transfer) and WR having career days.

Not going to jump off the cliff as far as our season goes .. but it was a bad day, as you can tell from the score. We've got a lot of work to do to be ready for the MVFC.
