View Full Version : AGS Top 25 - How They Fared - Week 0-1, Fall 2024

Preferred Walk-On
August 31st, 2024, 10:04 PM
Welcome back, FCS football…we missed you.

For the past few years, I have worked to continue superman7515’s awesome tradition of posting a “How They Fared” spreadsheet documenting results and some pertinent information about teams in the AGS Top 25 and others receiving votes (ORV). Hopefully I have done it justice, and I intend to continue it again this season.

There is not a whole lot to say this week (thus far), as pretty much all teams expected to win, did so. Also, the majority of the losses within the AGS Top 25/ORV were to FBS teams (with the exception of Montana St in Week 0).

There are still 13 games currently in progress involving the AGS Top 25/ORV, but I have decided to put this link out now, with updates to come as games finish or very early tomorrow morning. Once updated, please let me know if there are any errors.

Thanks for continuing to do this PWO. It's a huge benefit to me in my voting.

I'm interested to see if Lafayette/the PL remains ranked. I think they should remain in the Top 25 despite losing what many thought was a winnable FBS game (no one else had any luck so far). If they lose to Monmouth next weekend then they deserve to fall imo....

side note- Msssey ratings are crazy in some respects- I know not many totally respect them ( me included) but Lafayette is 54 in massey after having started 51 which seems insane. EWU who we played is 15th!! after starting 28th. Albany remains at 18 which is puzzling and URI at 16 boggles my mind. A lot of "last year" factored in for Albany and URI (b/c they eat HC) yet Lafayette gets nothing factored in for last year? I know its all meaningless but something not right with the formula.

I am curious how the losses to FBS teams shake up the rankings. Will a team that beat a div 2 jump a team that lost to a FBS?

Either in the email that tells you the poll is open or in the poll voters forum.

You had to have signed up. Go to the thread that Ursus has on signing up to vote. A page or two back. PM him. Do it quick. You already missed the preseason.

Regarding the FBS games, historically it hasn’t made a big difference unless the FCS team gets a win. At the end of the season playoff bids typically ignore them.

Of course we had some big blowouts yesterday, but I will probably not weigh that too much into my rankings. The next couple of weeks will be better gauges and where we’ll see bigger swings in the polls. Well - at least here on AGS where most voters pay attention and adjust each week.

I think if you look back at history, I would agree that an FBS win isn’t a given for top 20 success but it’s hard to find examples of FCS teams who DID get an FBS win that didn’t also end up in the playoffs - often making a deep run. You can also look back and see that very competitive losses are pretty good indicators.

From what I saw of all the FBS losses this weekend, four teams still stood out based on who they were playing and their performance:
Abilene Christian
Central Arkansas
Towson
Western Carolina

Won’t be surprised to see any of them in the playoff field.

Totally agree - win or at least have a really good showing (especially against perceived good FBS competition) and it helps. I was more saying even an ugly loss probably doesn’t hurt ranked FCS teams in the rankings too much, and those losses probably won’t factor at all in getting or not getting a playoff bid. If teams like SDSU, Furman, UTC, etc. go on and win 8-10 games, they’ll be in and be highly ranked. If they falter and only win 6 or 7 they’ll be judged on the FCS games and not the losses to top-20 FBS teams. The question was really do the big losses by ranked FCS teams make them move and even drop behind a team that had say a D2 win? My take is it won’t make huge changes to my poll. Now if we don’t see better play next week against lesser opponents…

I don't see too much movement in my poll this week. The teams I expected to win did, the teams I expected to lose did. We saw FCS teams playing P4 teams and getting blown out, as expected. We saw FCS teams takingon NAIA/D2s/PFLs and racking up a ton of points. Neither of which told me much about what the teams will look like going forward...So....My preseason poll and my week 1 poll will look quite the same.

You are signed up, I have not sent the email yet due to the game this afternoon. Once that game is over or no longer in doubt so it will be open in a few hours at the latest.

North Dakota stood tall against a well coached, likely Top 25ish Iowa State team in Ames. UND showed a significant uptick in their physicality against the Cyclones.

It's getting too late so I am opening the poll now. If you want to wait out the rain delay etc. so you can vote either of the teams playing do so.

I am very nervous about our game there this coming weekend. If we play like we did last night, we will lose.

I voted and if you want a sneak peak at my week 1 poll, go look at my preseason poll. I moved a few around, but it was very close to the same. I'm not punishing a team for getting drubbed by a P$ (I accidently held the shift down on the 4 and got a $, but I left it since it seemed appropriate now with the whole NIL thing) playoff team. And I'n not going to give a team a bunch of credit for drilling an NAIA school. Sure, I saw some good performances by some teams, but I feel like I already had them in a good spot to begin with. I saw a few mediocre performances, but those squads were lower in my pre season poll...So, I guess I feel good about it for now.

Idaho's loss is looking like the best showing, period .. even better than Mont St's win.
