View Full Version : Favorite Defunct Sports Team?

Have you been a fan of a sports team that packed up and left town or simply folded due to bad management? What's your favorite defunct sports team, and why?

Mine is the Winnipeg Jets, also one of my favorite places to watch a hockey game was the old Winnipeg Arena. I was a big Bobby Hull fan, and followed him after he left the Black Hawks. Great team in the WHA with Hull, Ulf Nillson, and Anders Hedberg. I stop in former Jets Goaltender, Joe Dailey's sports memorabila shop, accross the street from where the old arena was, and talk hockey when I get a chance. I also got to meet the Jets in 1981 for brauts and beer at a Fargo distributor. Met Dave Christian, Dale Hawerchuk etc. Jets Memorial Page Link (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.curtiswalker.com/jets/images/title1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.curtiswalker.com/jets/default.aspx&h=303&w=308&sz=31&hl=en&start=17&um=1&tbnid=INMRhfw0BdPJsM:&tbnh=115&tbnw=117&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwinnipeg%2Bjets%2Bphotos%26svnum%3D10 %26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN)

Yeah....what was his name....Peter Angelos?? they moved team temporarily to my home town (greensboro) while their diggs in Raleigh were being transformed into the hurricane home.....

IMO, hockey should have never moved south....might have made sense money wise, but lost it's charm......much like nascar has lost any charm it had by becoming corporate whores with races in Chicago and California at the expense of North Wilkesboro, Rockingham and Darlington......some things should not change...

I know, and you are right. My problem is that I remember those teams (especially the Colts, who were right up there with the Titans/Jets) as they were, and they are not remotely the same anymore. For example, I remember Don Maynard, Bill Mathis and Larry Grantham as Titans and Jets, and when I think of the Colts, I think of Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Gino Marchetti et. al. Still hard to think of the Colts playing in Indianapolis, of all places.

Technically, you're correct, but teams like the Whalers are viewed as defunct because in addition to being moved, the colors and nickname changed. Unlike the move of the Braves, Giants, Dodgers, etc. where the name and colors remained the same. Although, I bet if you ask some of the old Brooklyn fans, they view the Dodgers as defunct!!

I was also using the Whalers for Sega NHL. I'd work a lineup of Zarley Zalapski and Adam Burt in the back, Geoff Sanderson at LW, Terry Yake at RW and put Pat Verbeek at center. When Patty V. was hot, you could win the faceoff with a check, and do a slapshot from center ice against a cold goalie and score. I scored 12 goals in a game win him against a friend in the JQA dorms. He was sure to punch the elevator on the way out.

Boston Breakers get my vote. I believe they are playing the Washington Federals in this photo. I watched all the Breakers games on television the one season they played in Boston. I also saw them play vs. the New Jersey Generals who had Herschel Walker as a RB. I for one liked the USFL and especially the Breakers. They always seemed to win their games in a come from behind fashion. Pretty exciting football to say the least. Sadly they didn't last. After one season in Boston they moved to New Orleans.

I know this doesn't classify as a defunct team, but many folks here still haven't gotten over the Minnesota North Stars leaving for Dallas. They still sell North Stars clothing almost as much as the Minnesota Wild clothing it seems like. The 90s were a tough decade for hockey fans in the upper midwest with the Jets and North Stars leaving the region.

Growing up in ND, I remember the days where people would make the weekend trip north of the border to catch a Jets game or two, just a few hours from many North Dakota cities.

I was a huge New Haven Nighthawks fan when they were the Rangers minor league hockey team. Minor league hockeys fights are great and the Nighthawks would occasionally have Nick Futiu; who was never affraid to mix it up.

I always liked their hat, but as a kid I never figured out it was a funky looking letter 'M.' Plus, they wore powder blue road unis longer than any other team, 23 straight seasons.
The tri-color hat was much better looking than the all blue edition of later years. I liked the new unis, but hated the new hat.

Honorable mention goes to the Philadelphia Athletics. Although they left for KC nearly 20 years before I was born, my dad would talk about them, as he had been to their games at Shibe Park. I even had an A's throwback hat in college. I think it's still in my parent's basement:

When they dropped the word "North" from references to their nickname, even though they were still playing in Bloomington, MN, it was obvious they were going to move, as "Stars" was more geographically neutral. I'm just shocked they didn't become the Minnesota Lone Stars for a season or two and changed their colors to Red, White and Blue before moving on to Dallas.

Sometime around 1962 my father took my friend and I up to Yankee Stadium in hopes of getting Standing Room Only tix for the Giants / Redskins games. When we learned that the FDNY had decided to halt the selling of SRO tickets, we got back on the subway and went across the river to the Polo Grounds to watch the Titans. Actually,we listened to the Giants game on the transistor radio with a bunch of other people sittng around us. That was the game that Y A Tittle tied the NFL single game TD passes record with seven TDs. I do recall Al Dorrow was the Titans QB, and Sammy Baugh was the coach. xthumbsupx

The 2 best things to happen to the Titans/Jets were:
1) Shea Stadium. Yes, crappy by today's standards, particularly for footb all, but everyone forgets that the "modern" multi-purpose stadia of the 60's were a welcome change from watching football in aging, out-dated baseball-only stadia. In the NFL, only the Skins and Cardinals were playing modern stadia by 1965, and both teams sucked balls.
2) The Mara brothers started squabbling and the quality of their team suffered drastically for it. So, if you wanted to watch good football in the Big Apple, you had to ride the #7 (or LIRR) out to Flushing Meadows.

They played a few seasons at the (then brand new) Providence Civic Center after leaving the old auditorium. THAT was the death of the franchise. Season ticket holders who went to the games at the cozy Auditorium for decades just couldn't take a liking to the new impersonal Civic Center. My uncle was one of those folks. He was a Reds season ticket holder for about 20 years at the Auditorium. After the franchise moved to the Civic Center he gave up his season ticket after just one season. Others followed suit and the team left Providence after just two or three seasons at the Civic Center.

What's with the crest with the Union Jack? I get the fleur-de-lis and tower, which was probably inspired by the Acadiana flag. But the Union Jack (of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, before Ireland was included)?

The Stapleton Stapes (Staten Island) - NFL

1929 The Stapleton Stapes join the National Football League. Although never an upper-echelon team during their four years in the elite league, the Stapes do manage a 0-0 tie with the world champion Chicago Bears in their final season.

John Reaves used to play for the Phila. Eagles during the era of Pete Liske. He was #7 and Liske was #14 (I barely recall that).

And his son played for App State. Fun fact... I think John Reaves set the modern NFL record for most INT's thrown in a game with seven. I could be wrong on that though.

The crest basically represents the three countries that controlled Baton Rouge in it's history.

Did the son play for App?? OK, I do believe that John threw seven ints in a game.

They officially became part of this thread in 2001 (replaced by an ECHL team). They mention "Whoopees," but most (and google search) shows just Whoopee.

Feel like ... Macon Whoopee (http://www.officialgamepuck.com/TownIndex/United%20States/Georgia/Macon%20Whoopee2.htm)

According to the wikipedia article, the Macon Whoopees existed for one season, 1973, before disbanding. Then, in 1996, a new team, called the Macon Whoopee, no 's', was formed and lasted until 2002, when they folded and were replaced by the Macon Trax, who have since folded.

Ironically, I am in Macon Georgia this week. I think they should revert to the Whoppee name as I don't know what else you do in Macon at night!

I don't think any other town inherited a better team than when the Oiler's moved to Nashville. Steve McNair, Eddie George, and still remnants of Buddy Ryan's defense were hard to let go as a Texan, plus a young up and coming coach, Jeff Fisher.

Probably the only team that was more talented could be the Stars. Modano, Moog, Hatcher; a lot of extremely talented youth that brought the cup to Dallas. Sorry about stealing them away, MN deserved a hockey team much more than North Texas. I would have to say though, if you took away all other southern hockey teams, Dallas is the only place I would keep one. People loved the Stars when I lived there.

I believe you are thinking of the USFL. AIR, there was no second WFL Champion. The league disbanded in or about November 1975.

I collect memorabilia from the Minneapolis Lakers. Met George Mikan a few times. Asked him about his championship rings. He said his wife took all his rings and had one ring made out of them. Also saw Slater Martin a few months back, he's getting up there in years. Bud Grant was also a Laker, coached in the CFL and is an NFL Hall of Fame Coach.

Isn't this the 2nd time they've disappeared? In the early 80's, I would actually forget that New York had a team. The Eastern Conf. was, the Celtics, the Sixers, and a collection of stiffs who would be eliminated prior to the Eastern Conf. finals.
