I was indifferent to the Giants before this postseason but if they can end it by beating my 3 most hated teams they'll have to jump up to my second favorite team. Once the Colts lost I thought there was no chance for anyone other than New England, Green Bay, or Dallas.

This is like the NFL version of the South Park episode about the world of warcraft. The Giants are like the boys who build themselves up by killing boars in order to challenge the tyrannical supercharacter (the Patriots) who goes around killing everybody.

Nobody really wants to watch the Giants try to take on the Pats. EVERYBODY wanted to see Favre there, not baby eli. The Pats will have a hayday with that secondary, right up the seams all day long. Eli won't be seeing much of anything except the ground because he'll be getting knocked over by the LB's every other play. I am disappointed in the Packers, because now the Super Bowl just got a whole lot less exciting. The Pack let a mediocre team beat them, and as a result the SB will now be mediocre.

Go Pats.

The Giants played great against the Patriots in the last regular season game. It actually got me very nervous because they seemed to know how to put pressure on Brady and make their own good plays. They are also on a hot streak right now and have been proving that they are no team to take lightly. Don't get me wrong, I hate the Giants and LOOOVEEE the Pats so I hope they crush em, but I don't think this win will be as easy s you seem to think... (I just hope it is!) haha xthumbsupx xoxo

Hmmmm....you mean all 53 million people who make up the NY, NJ, and New England region...yah know...the largest combined media market in the world.

Not to mention the fans who are all over the country, however have roots in New England, NY, and NJ....or the hundred or so million more that watch throughout the world.

Not to mention that there are familial divisions (tons of New England region fans have a split between the 'Jints and Pats because before the Pats existed, most rooted for the NY Football Giants...a team that played games at the Yale Bowl in Connecticut for a few games.

Not to mention this would be the most historical win for either team (the Giants the underdogs stopping the machine....the Pats trying to become the greatest team ever).

Yah...no one wants to see this.

So you're saying television networks would prefer just the northeast market because it's the largest wheras if the rest of the country did want to see the Packers (which most of us did) they could have not only gotten the northeast but the midwest and west as well. Right.

Also there's a little market known as Southern California.

The rest of us do not want to nor do we care about this lame ass Super Bowl. This is like the Subway Series again (which got the lowest ratings in World Series history btw)

Dane96
January 21st, 2008, 02:20 PM
Ummm...yeah I am saying that exactly. Mass media in the Northeast costs nearly 3 million dollars for a 30 second commercial. At least that is what they are setting the figures for. Revenues for the Super Bowl could top 400million for these two teams, keeping the Super Bowl as BY FAR the most valuable sports franchise single event in the world.

On the other hand, outside of the major markets of Chicago and Dallas, all other ad costs in the midwest are nearly HALF that for the Super Bowl. Last year the Chicago...yes the crappy team that got smoked...market garnered 2.6mm for a 30 second ad. Multiply that by the 60 ads that are scheduled. This year, they are projecting nearly 180 million in ad revenue...shattering last year's game record of 154 million.

Do the numbers fluctuate higher and lower depending on the participation of certain teams? YES, because of who will be watching the games. The Northeast is nearly neck and neck as the largest consumer spending market...with Southern California. I am not making these numbers up for giggles...those are the hard facts. It is the reason why Chicago kept the members up-- because it is a huge consumer market.

You bring up the point of Southern California-- You would be right, except that there are more transplanted Northeasterners in SoCal then there are Green Bay fans. It is a joke in the Northeast-- You graduate college and go work in the Tri-State (NY, NJ, CT), Boston, or D.C. If you are "finding yourself" you move to Miami to work in restaurants/bars, San Diego to enjoy the lifestyle and weather, LA to be a rockstar/actor, and San Fran for a bigger and better version of Boston...and a much prettier NY. If you want to live out the youthful years...you move to Boulder or Denver to Ski/Snowboard.

Those places have HEAVY Northeast transplants...HEAVY.

Being that there are NEW ENGLAND and NEW YORK fans scattered nationwide, the ad revenues are going to sky rocket because of how many people will watch..and the potential spending power of those teams fans. Furthermore, the age range of fans watching the game will heaviuly favor the 23-42 year old cross section that ADVERTISERS WANT TO GAIN A FOOTHOLD WITH (they have the highest spending power). Would you like to make a wager that this will be a TOP 5 watched Super Bowl. I will warn you...I already have "inside numbers" of what the NFL projects.

Either way, the NFL and the Networks would have been happy with Green Bay or NY. But to suggest NO ONE WILL WANT TO WATCH THIS...goes against the finances projected by the NFL...based on the teams playing.

Oh...and for the record...on line tickets for the game have already ranged from 3000-8000...an ALL-TIME RECORD.

I'd say there is a huge demand.

I'm rooting for the team which has the best of both worlds; it is from New York and has the good sense to play its home games in New Jersey.

And no, it's not the Jets, even though they used to be my favorite team, going back to the early AFL days (I still have a hard time with the way they treated Joe Namath at the end of his career).

I think most people will watch this game because they will either see:

1) A team go undefeated -- which hasn't happened in 35 years -- and might not happen again in our lifetimes

or

2) One of the all-time upsets as a #5 seed stops the steamrolling NE Patriots in their bid to become the first undefeated team in 35 years

Let me understand this FTG, you are predicting a blowout...yet the team you are predicting the blowout against just went through...on the road...and beat the 1, 2, and 4 seeds...in pretty convincing fashion?!?!

By that logic, all NFC reps would have been blown out. Not disagreeing with that logic...but it wouldnt matter who repped according to what you are saying.

I am saying from a $$$ and ratings standpoint...the NFL IS THRILLED.

Imagine the Manning family taking not ONE but TWO Super Bowls from New England. IN addtion, the hatred between NY and New England. Finally, the family splits that are likely to occur because of old and new loyalties (Giant fans and Pat fans in the same family).

Taking nothing away from the Giants, a win's a win, but their last 2 victories were anything but convincing. Having said that, the Pats have been playing down to their competition for the last 2 months so I don't think it will be a blowout either. It'll be close at least until into the 2nd half.

Thunderstruck...check the stats...and re-watch that game. I AM NOT A GIANT FAN...far from...but if it were not for a stupid Sam Madison penalty....that game may be a 14 point game. The Giants were pretty much all over the Pack.

Giants 24 First Downs
Pack 13 First Downs

Giants Total Yards: 380
Giants Longest Play: 32 Yards

Pack Total Yards: 264
Pack Longest Play: 90 yards

Take away that one long play...and the Giants shut down one of the most prolific offenses to the tune of under 170 yards. The Giants, conversely, gained well over 300 if you take away the one long play.

The Giants also nearly (by a couple of minutes) doubled up the Pack in Time of Possession.

The facts show...the Giants dominated.

I will admit...they did not dominate Dallas.

I agree they dominated statistically but the only stat that counted was 20 to 20 with 3 minutes left when the Giants fumbled a punt around midfield that two Packers had the chance to jump on. Statistics are like bikinis, what the reveal is suggestive but what they conceal is vital, they were 1 play away from losing the game and whenever that is the case you cannot say a victory was "in convincing fashion".

A thought that just came to me today:

The last time I can remember a Super Bowl matchup appearing to be this lopsided was back in 2001-02 when the upstart Patriots won their first Lombardi trophy against the heavily favored powerhouse St. Louis Rams.

Could it be that the Patriots have come full circle in 6 years? Other than their improbable runs to the Super Bowl behind an unproven QB (Tom Brady was unproven at the time), there's not too many similarities between the '01-'02 Pats and the '07-'08 Giants. Just an interesting coincidence from the last perceived "big mismatch" in the Super Bowl.

Here's to hoping the underdog can pull it out again. xbeerchugx

Up for another wager, my friend?????????

Dave, I believe that the terms of our wager are now set.

It is a straight-up bet: a Fordham cap, wagered on my part on behalf of the Giants; against a UMass cap, wagered on Dave's part on behalf of the Patriots.

For those following the history of our bets, Dave is 2-0. The first bet was whether the Yankees or the Red Sox would win the AL East this year. Dave gamely accepted this straight-up bet, which I offered, when the Red Sox were already leading the injury-plagued Yankees by 10 games.

As we all know, when the Yankee regulars returned, the Yankees proved their supremacy by nearly erasing that entire deficit before just falling short during the final weekend of the season.

Thus, I was burdended with the public shame of having to wear a "Red Sox" avatar during this year's baseball playoffs.

Our next bet was over the Fordham-UMass FCS playoff game. UMass was a prohibitive favorite over the young and playoff-untested Rams. But in a memorable game broadcast coast-to-coast on ESPNU, the Rams proved their mettle by hanging tough with the national finalist from the year prior. A critical late turnover allowed UMass to take what proved to be an insurmountable 14-point lead for a 49-35 final.

Thus, I bore a UMass avatar for the balance of UMass' stay in the FCS playoffs.

So, as you can see, I am due. Yes, in all instances I've had the underdog side of the bet, but the law of averages are in my favor now despite the Giants' underdog status.

Just in case, here are some Fordham caps for your consideration:

The terms are set...I look forward to the game next week...

There seems to be a shortage of hats on the UMass Atletics site these days...they have alumni hats and the sort...but just two I would offer for this wager...

But I'm pretty confident that I won't be paying out...:p :p

Don't worry. I will be far away from you :p when the patriots lose so I can not be blamed for anything, eventhough we both know that it will be my fault, someway somehow, and then ROAR will happen! xnodx

CCUCheer, Did Travis make this for you? If so, he forgot the Bruins. They're not playing badly so let's spread the love around more evenly.

there a network of sites for the Sox, Patriots and Celtics.... i went to the Sox one once, dont remember exactly but I think they have forums and blogs and stuff...

Regtardless of how the Bruins may play, they wont have a large following until Jeremy Jacobs is gone.

Nah, I actually just kinda stumbled upon it and thought it was a cool pic... I wish the Bruins were on it too... I used to go to a lot of their games at the Fleet Center, fun times! xnodx
