Sacred Heart and Merrimack jointly announced today their football programs will compete for The Yankee Conference Championship presented by LEONA on Nov. 16 at Merrimack.

So Leona has the old Yankee conference IP....Now MC and SHU are using that to have a conference championship game to a conference they were never apart of.....

Honestly that is so ****ing dumb, very unoriginal. You would think the schools would create their own rivalry than use imagery and not a trophy from a conference they were never in. Lame AF

Yeah, it's dumb.

Nothing more than trying to get some sponsor dollars and manufacture a rivalry between two schools.

Yes, this whole thing is nonsense on stilts.

I remember the old Yankee Conference from when I was in HS. I thought it was cool to have CT, MA, ME, NH, RI & VT in one group. Then Vermont dropped football after the 1974 season without winning one football title. That was disappointing. I'll blame Ben and Jerry even though they hadn't started up yet. Now the old gang will never get back together with UConn & UMass moving up.

Makes sense! Pointless FCS independents play a meaningless game for a homeless Trophy. I don't believe the Yankee Conference ever sponsored an annual Championship game anyway.

Of course it is meaningless to purists and anyone with a sense of history but give them credit for thinking outside of the box. Per NCAA, the CAA is the legacy Yankee Conference.

This is just a cheap marketing/branding effort to put a spotlight on 2 D-I New England Catholic schools that are basically unknown FCS without a path to the Championship.

I'm more surprised that the CAA or Maine, UNH, and URI let this IP fall into someone else's hands. Seems like they dropped the ball on this and wonder if they will file something to prevent its use and association with the 3 FCS New England flagships.

Blasphemy.

Conceptually it is a great idea to promote a rivalry between two schools in neighboring states, CT and Mass. But to link to a conference they were never part of just seems bizarre. Border Battle or something similar to what Maine and NH do would make a lot more sense.

Apparently they tracked down W&M who had the trophy last........ I would have told them to kick ****ing rocks if I was W&M.

Just a strange situation, I am shocked the schools even thought it was a good idea vs making something new...

NEC can't take them back quick enough lol.

What a shot across the bow at the USCAA's Yankee Small College Conference:

I won't recognize Sacred Heart or Merrimack as MY Yankee Conference championship until they beat whatever the Hampshire College Black Sheep can run out there.

The only people upset about this exists on this board and a couple of folks on X.

Why would anyone else care? Just two teams who have made themselves irrelevant in FCS football by leaving their conference coming up with something that borders on ludicrous.

This is somehow much worse than the conFLiCT.

If this was somehow an effort to try to convince UNH, Maine, URI and perhaps CCSU to join into a New Yankee Conference Sponsored By America East and the Yankee Candle Company, it doesn't appear to be working.
