What's URI supposed to be like this year? Surprised to see zero votes for them. Did they lose a lot of experienced starters?

Good to see a slight increase in voters from last year's preseason poll - up to 46 from the 43 that participated in last year's season poll. Hopefully that trend continues since we've been bleeding poll voters for a few years and it really is a great way to learn more about FCS teams/conferences you don't follow.

I suspect URI will be just like they've been 3 out of the 5 most recent full seasons - 1 or 2 good plays away from the playoffs! Their biggest loss was QB Kasim Hill who finally ran out of eligibility. But who didn't lose a starting QB from last season? Coach Fleming has been pretty adept at finding the talent he needs to replace via transfer.

Here is my best guess...and at this point that is all we have to go on. Maybe I've got some SoCon/East Coast Bias, but it is all I have to offer at this point...maybe my Mocs are too high for some of you, but that is the team I follow closely, and I think they have something special this season.... here it is, pick it apart....

Mocs are not high enough. Should be up 2 clicks.

Mercer low also. Understandable w/loss of HC, QB, Top 2 WR’s, Top RB, Best OLman, and 3 Defensive Stars (2 DB’s, 1 DE), but they cleaned up in portal and have somethin’ a-brewin’ in Maconga.

Furman also too low, but given graduating about 50 Players, it’s a hard case to make…and FUBeAR would hate for anyone to think he is biased.

I left Albany out of my poll, my last impression of them, the game with SDSU is still pretty fresh in my mind and still hilarious. They seem to have lost a lot from last year or am I missing something. I was going to put them around that 23 to 25 area but decided not to. What say you to the other folks that didn’t have them in their poll.

Really, though, I think the Viks are going to be good this year. However, with our schedule, I don't think we will be that good to get even half of those games. We could be the best 2-10 team at the end of the year. But, we'll see. Thanks for the optimism.xthumbsupx

Teams traveling across the country two consecutive weeks should always be given a pass. As to Albany this year they didn't just lose Puffenbarger. They also lost the best edge pass rushing duo in FCS and some others.

Since we seem to play them every season, Albany (along with URI and Maine) is a team I keep pretty close watch on. I agree with your instincts on Albany, although it is hard to keep a 2023 Semi-finalist out of the 2024 pre-season poll. In addition to QB Reese Poffenbarger , Albany lost their three best defenders: DL Anton Juncaj and Elijah Hills and CB Aamir Hall to the portal - all three to P5 FBS programs. They also had their share of graduating Seniors.

Head Coach Greg Gattuso, warmly referred to as GG by the hundreds of Danes fans calling for his firing a couple seasons ago, has been adept at finding some talent via transfer in the past. But he didn't seem able to meld the talent into a winning program until 2023 when he had an abundance of it. So I see a mediocre season for Albany in 2024, 6-6 with OOC wins over LIU and Cornell and losses to WVU and Idaho. They have a very favorable CAA schedule if you believe the Preseason CAA Poll: wins over Maine, Bryant, Hampton and Stony Brook; losses to Elon, Delaware, UNH and URI.

Like I said I liked to put a few sleeper picks in there. :)

The Vikings could surprise a few, as they have returning quarterback Dante Chachere

Portland State ranked No. 2 in the Big Sky for scoring offense (33.8 PPG) and rushing offense (224 YPG) last season.

Quincy Craig should be a good one, if he stays healthy as a runner and receiver.

The defense did struggle last season, but returns 9 starters with a year under their belt including Freshman All-American LB Michael Montgomery
and the secondary should be better with 4 of the 5 starters returning including Jayden House and Elijah Eason.

Yes of course a long shot, but I think you got some horses on that offense and who doesn't like to go for the upset wins.

Don't get me wrong. We do have the personnel to be good this year and we won't be a pushover to anyone. We will come to play every game. But like my old coach once told me, it doesn't matter if you lose by 3 or 30, it is still a loss. By the end of the season, we may be able to claim that we've lost to 7 of the top 15 teams by a total of 26 points (or whatever it is), but they are still 7 losses.

I appreciate your optimism. I wish others in the Viking community would share it. I want to see where we are by the end of September to see if it is "shock the world" or "missed it by that much".

Somebody is tracking my Redbirds closely ... feeling pretty good as of now.

Good top 25 .. but not seeing SDSU repeating. They lost a lot to graduation .. many 6th year SR studs. Youngstown is a crapshoot with all of the transfers out and in .. they could be real tough, but who knows. Tarleton is a team to watch ... see if they play any defense.

Portland State has arguably one of the toughest, if not the toughest, schedules in D-IAA.

The plan to fund Athletics by scheduling two D-IA opponents continues. This choice generally leaves the team in the hole and bruised by the time the Big Sky portion comes around.

They get an early BSC game and an FCS OOC in between the 2 FBS, but that is a BRUTAL OOC schedule, goddamn! P5, preseason AGS #6, nearly top-25 G5, @ preseason AGS #9... ouch. And of the six ranked BSC teams.... PSU gets ALL of them?!? It looks like the first game PSU would be favored to win (from a preseason viewpoint) wouldn't be until game 7 on Oct. 12th @ ISU-o. And even that reprieve is short lived with MSU coming to town the following week, then a bye, followed by 3 more top-11 ranked BSC teams. No Dam Cup though.... who are PSU's "rivalry games" that are locked in each year, if EWU isn't one of them?

In addition, for what seems like a decade now, we schedule two D-IA teams per season to fund the program and other sports.
I am certain scheduling these games is the priority over any rivalry games.
Portland State has very little fan support these days, so maintaining rivalries of any kind seems tertiary at best.
It is, first and foremost, a business to support student athletes and their educational goals.
