It was the year of the bicentennial — 1976, if you don't want to do math – when Peel Hawthorne first set foot on William & Mary's campus. Four years later, as college students tend to do, she graduated and moved on.Williamsburg was in her rearview mirror, but not for long. An unexpected job opportunity brought Hawthorne back in 1987, and she never left. She coached Tribe field hockey for 26 years and spent the next 11 in athletic administration before a well-earned retirement last month.
