It'll be interesting to see that secondary in action as well as the place kicking duties. Otherwise, those starters look solid along with any backups, newcomers that might emerge like DJ Smith did last year as a freshman.

I liked Brett Irvin's effort as a redshirt freshman last year, 1st game in college started @ Michigan due to Suttles injury. He should keep that position in good shape.

I think you are thinking of Love, but he wears 17. He had 100 yards in the NC game and was a clutch receiver all year. 16 is a Frosh WR who I don't think played a down this year.

QB R.J. Toman (There are a few rumors that Decker will challenge, but Toman looks very skilled based on last years efforts)
RB Chad Kackert (I said he'd bust out last year, based on end of season results...I still feel the same)
WR1 Mike Boyle (Will be the GUY next season)
WR2 J.T. Wright (Will be a fantastic possession WR, IMO)
WR3 Chris Chandler (This is kind of a pick 'em, but I'll guess Chandler over guys like Negron, Fox and Mason)
TE Scott Sicko (Will likely be up there with Boyle for most catches, potential All-American)
OT Josh Droesch
OG Chris McClurg
OC Eric Cumba
OG Tom Neill
OT Andrew Elwell

DE Kyle Maroney
DT Steve Young
DT T.J. Taylor
DE Kevin Peters
LB Matt Parent
LB Devon Jackson
LB Sean Ware/DB Maurice Duper
CB Dino Vasso
S Hugo Souza
S Terrance Klein
CB John Clements

UNH brings back a lot of players that played a fair amount last season. Even guys like Toman (2 Games), Neill and McClurg, who weren't FT starters, got a good deal of run. My big concerns is at DE, where Maroney and Peters just aren't very good. UNH will need production from that position for the defense to improve.

I think you are right about Hennessee. I'd look to see Ben Jorden in this spot. He will be a RS Frosh next year. Saw him play HS ball at Charlotte Latin and he is a great catching TE. Blocking is solid but not as good as Bettis from a few years back but still pretty good. I actually think that Tavaris Washington may get the starting nod over Coco. He will be a lot like Dexter was this year and TJ will be a lot like Hans. Another receiver to keep an eye on is Matt Cline. I am pretty sure he will be a RS Sophomore next year but the coaches were pretty high on him and he actually had the first catch at the Michigan game. On my final note Mario Acitelli will be a Sophomore next year if he is granted the Medical RS.

Some guessing here for Furman:

QB: Jordan Sorrells JR
TB: Mike Brown SO or Stephan LaFrance JR
FB: Brantley Kendall SR
C: David Menocal SR
OG: Tyler Haynes JR or Will Landers JR
OG: Heath Cockburn JR
OT: Joel Bell SR
OT: Thomas Slaughter SR
SE: RJ Webb JR
FLK: Adam Mims SO
TE: Larry Hedden JR or Chris Truss JR

NG: Justin Brown JR
DT: Cory Ray JR or Ricky Jones SR
DE: Paul White SR or Channing Welch SO
DE: Gaines Burnette SR or JJ Mars SR or Shaun VanRensberg JR
MLB: Philip Morris JR or Brandon Boykin RSFR
OLB: Kadarron Anderson RSFR or Hunter Twitty SR
OLB: Brandon Williams SR
CB: William Middleton SR
CB: Marshan Austin SR or Julian Hicks JR or Luke Rorech RSFR
SS: Max Lerner SO or Julian Hicks JR
FS: Thomas Twitty SR
Kicker: Chas Short RSFR
Punter: Trent Hawk JR

There should be some interesting position battles in the spring. LaFrance and Brown will be joined by high-touted redshirt Tank Baker. Haynes and Landers will battle for a guard spot and it will be very interesting to see what the coaches do with all that talent at tightend. Also Mims will be challenge by scout team player of the year Seddrick Cunningham.

Defense should be faster and continue the improvement seen in the last part of the 07 season. Look for redshirt Anderson to make a big splash and the coaches have to get more playing time for Lerner and Hicks.

If someone steps in for the secondary it'll not be for Gilbert or Love, those are two solid players. Gilbert played extremely well filling in for both DBs during the playoffs. Love, his time is due.

As far as in the WRs, it may not be a full on switch...but they have tons of quality players to fill in. If ASU doesn't sign a QB, I see Hillary not playing as much as WR being the primary backup for Armanti. Johnson is a solid WR and one of Armanti's favorite targets. Came on late as a freshman, did a good job last year. Quick, played good against Michigan but I believe he hurt his shoulder and was sidelined for most of the year. Surprise of the year could be Blake Elder, Trey's younger brother. He was second string behind Hans last year and got more reps as he learned the system.

I would be very suprised if we weren't ranked. We finished the last half of the season only losing to App and beating ranked Elon and ranked GSU in consecutive weeks before pummeling WCU.

The question next season is Furman's defense. Our offense has the possibility of being an absolute juggernaut.

Yes, I absolutely am. You cannot stop the running game with Terrance Klein or Maurice Duper in the box over a third LB. There is no better time to make the conversion than now, with our excellent LB depth. Jackson, Ware and Parent starting, and guys like Peterkuskie, Cosgrove and potentially, Ruhl, as backups, they should use that depth to their best.

Experienced depth and talent on the o-line should play a large role in the Paladins success in 08. Besides the returning starters or part time starters. Dustin Chancellor returns after a year recovering from a knee injury. Several young players should see some rotation time. Frazier, Ayoob and redshirts Lee and Barrington.

Defensively I think Furman has dramatically improved in the speed department, the addition of Anderson and Boykin and the versatility of Hicks and Lerner should make for some exciting play. I would still have to rate the defensive line as the strength of the defense. When is the last time Furman could say that? Projected starters; Brown, Ray, Jones, Burnett, White will be joined by a very promising group of redshirts:
Adim Obata 6-0 253 NG
McKenzy Opio 6-3 295 DT
Derrick Parrea 6-3 215 DE

I would still have to rate the defensive line as the strength of the defense. When is the last time Furman could say that? Projected starters; Brown, Ray, Jones, Burnett, White will be joined by a very promising group of redshirts:
Adim Obata 6-0 253 NG
McKenzy Opio 6-3 295 DT
Derrick Parrea 6-3 215 DE

Brother?

Yep. He has great hands but apparently can't get open enough. All he does is catch the ball when it is thrown to him so I am hoping he sees the field a lot more next season.

Liberty returns 7 starters on defense (including the offensive player of the year) and 6 on defense

For those unfamiliar, Julian Hicks was Furman's spy during the GSU game on Jayson Foster. He was (as far as I saw this season) the only FCS player who contained the Eagle quarterback.

Furman is certainly upping their speed department on defense.

The ASU lineup looks stellar... no questions at wr, rb, qb, dline, or lb
oline has guys coming back from injuries, and non starters but plenty of experience
the secondary is definately the biggest question... cortez will be a star in my opinion and love will be fine but beyond that there are a lot of question marks for sure...

The team that should scare the poop out of the whole country is Richmond. I believe they are returning about the whole team. They were very very young this year and got to the semi's. They should be rated in the top 4. From what I saw in Boone this year they are the real deal!

Richmond will definitely be good but with a new coach it may throw a wrinkle into them getting in their groove at the beginning of the season which may cost them.

Furman's offense will be very good, possibly dominant, but defense is still a huge question. The Paladins need a better pass rush and better coverage. If that happens, watch out.

Wouldn't lock L.Love in for that spot just yet, depends on spring practice, transfers and incoming freshmen. He will continue to get playing time regardless but the other safety spot wasn't a strength this year and something kept him from securing the starting spot this past season.

Jerry doesn't hand out positions just because you've paid your dues (see Trey Elder and Cam Spear). The better player will claim the spot, even if they are a freshman.

The two corners will likely be Gilbert and Reine. I know Love and Mark LeGree are listed as a corners but IMO they're more likely leaders for the safety positions but one or both of those spots could very well end up as a freshman or transfer.

Furman's defensive front four was the top in the conference in terms of sacking the quarterback in 2007. App State registered the second most and played four more games.

The Paladins will miss the presence of Wallace Artis on the outside. However, they are starting to move to smaller, quicker defensive ends (away from the bigger bookends like Artis, Ravenell, Glover, etc).

Justin Brown has the potential to be one of the best interior defensive lineman in the conference in 2008.

All right, let's see if I can wager a guess for McNeese State:

Offense
LT Kyle Link (returning)
LG Eman Naghavi (returning)
C Lance Fremin (returning?)
RG Jimbo Hill (returning)
RT David Ballard (returning)
TE Wes Manghan (returning)
QB Derrick Fourroux (returning)
FB Terez Jackson
TB Elrick Jones/Toddrick Pendland
WR Quinten Lawrence (returning)
Slot Steven Whitehead (returning)
WR Immanuel Friddle (returning)

Defense (a little more tricky)
DE Kenton Alleyne
DT Vaalyn Jackson (returning)
DT Kenneth Lundy (returning)
DE Josh Ellison
MLB Deron Minor
WLB Allen Nelson (returning)
BLB Matt Kreamer
FS Jamelle Juneau (returning after sitting out a year)
WS Brant Linde (returning)
SS John Vigers/Tyson Sibley (both returning)
CB Ladarius Key
CB wide open, maybe Brian Harvey, John Hamilton or Jeremy Haynes, could be a RS freshman like London Durham or Jarron Jackson. Really wide, wide open

K-P Blake Bercegeay (returning)
DS Anthony Schultz (returning)
H Richard Connor (returning)
KR Steven Whitehead (returning), Elrick Jones (returning), Toddrick Pendland (returning)

This was done simply by plugging in returning starters then moving up the next guy in the depth chart if the starter wasn't coming back. You could see some position moves that could affect the depth chart too, so stay tuned.

QB-Lance Kriesien SR (about 1900 passing and 700 rushing...All Conf...one of the best dual-threat QBs in Div1 football)
RB-Alex Henderson JR (BSC All-Conf Player, former new comer of the year
--or Lionel Scott SR (may get another year of eligibility...All-Conf...Henderson and Scott were the only 2 RBs in the conference to average over 6 ypc)
WR- Skyler Moore SR (returning starter coming off of injury)
WR- Curt Sweeny JR (will be pushed by 2 very talented JC wideouts)
WR- Ryan Rauchert JR (returning starter)
TE- Shaun Fitzpatrick SR (All Conf...All-American HM...one of the best TEs in school history)
T- Trevor Heekin SR (Returning starter coming off of injury)
G- Jeff Heinz SO (returning starter, moved from center)
C- Kevin Meagher JR (returning starter coming off of injury...All Conf player)
G- Kris Poindexter SO (returning starter after playing as a true freshman)
T- Ryne Holstrom JR (returning starter, All-Conf player)

Once again, the Lumberjacks offense looks to excite. Lumberjacks return most starters on an offense that lead the BSC in rushing and was the only team to place 3 players amongst the 100 in rushing in the nation (Scott, Kriesien, Henderson)

DE- Kyle Rath SO (saw significant playing time this fall)
NT- Steve Nwogbe (returning starter)
DE- Brandon Vance SO or other (postion seems to be open entering spring ball)
LB- Cody Dowd JR(All Conf HM, returning starter)
LB- Zack McNally JR(rerturning starter)
LB- Jake Welch SO/ Kinoa Pea JR/ To'a Samauelu SO(all saw significant playing time this fall, will battle in spring)
S- Adam Wright SR (returning starter coming back from injury)
S- Cyrus Igono SR(returning starter, All-American, All-Conf...tied FCS record for blocked kicks in a season)
S-Josh Luck JR(Returning Starter, All-Conf)
CB- KJ Gerard SR(FCS active leader in INTs, All- American, All-Conf...one of the best CB in school history)
CB- Jimmy Mitchel SO/Other (lumberjacks signed a couple JC CBs)

K/P- Robbie DeHaze SR (returning starter, All- Conf, All-American HM)

Lumberjacks return most starters on Defense with only a few holes to fill. The defense should be solid...looking forward to improve on last year.

I think that Mason will get the nod over Chandler for WR3. I think something will be done about the DE position, I agree, we must get some sacks from them!!!
