Furman

Pre-Portal Era (prior to the 2019 Season)…
Ingle Martin, QB & Punter from SEC’s Florida Gators - In 2005, Martin was a Division I FCS first-team All-American selection at quarterback by The Sports Network, and earned first-team All-American honors as a punter from 1-AA.org. He also won All-Southern Conference first-team honors at both quarterback and punter. Martin was named All-South Carolina as a quarterback by the South Carolina state sportswriters. He also won, Furman's Vince Perone (team most valuable player) Award following his senior season.

Portal Era…
Tyler Huff, QB from Presbyterian (currently @ Jacksonville State for his final 6th season after completing his Masters degree at Furman)
Honors & Awards
2023 Preseason All-Southern Conference (2nd Team), Team Co-Captain, Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll

Mercer

Pre-Portal Era…
FUBeAR Jr., OG from Air Force - All-Southern Conference 2014
(There may be others equally, or even more, deserving, but FUBeAR is hopelessly biased and gonna stick with this story)

(For you hard-core Mercer Fans thinking about other All- Conference Transfers … RB’s Alex Lakes and Tee Mitchell were both Air Force PREP, so, technically, NOT transfers. Also, P Matt Shiel was about 35 years old and transferred from some Pub-affiliated Aussie Rules Team (something like that). So we can!t count him either. TBH, OL & DL Bret Niederreither is certainly deserving of this accolade, but he has 3 negatives working against him 1) name too hard to spell, 2) transferred from Temple, and 3) he’s from Pennsylvania…so…nah. Austin Sanders, OL transfer from MVSU, would be in the running as well, but if it’s not gonna be Niederreither, we can’t go with Sanders. Sticking with FUBeAR Jr.)

Portal Era… (4-way Tie…sorry)
Jason Poe - OG from D2 Lenoir-Rhyne - All SoCon - 3 years on NFL rosters (so far) - 49ers, Jets, Eagles
Fred Payne - QB from Coastal Carolina - prolly All SoCon, not gonna look it up
Ty James - WR from Georgia - All SoCon - currently with the Vikings
Devron Harper - WR/RS from Gardner Webb - also currently with the Vikings

For sure Streveler for the Yotes. He would be an easy number 2 on pretty much any NFL roster and a chance to be the starter in the right situation.

Harvard: Clifton Dawson, RB, played for us for four years in the mid-2000s. After he redshirted somewhere else (Northwestern Chicago I believe, can't remember now), he transferred to us and rewrote the record book, at least in rushing, to some extent.

Can't think of anyone for ETSU, UC Davis and St. Thomas.

I think we are up to around 14 FBS transfers this year. I am not sure of the exact top one yet. We have several key players at key positions and both our RB and WR rooms look pretty good. The one I am watching closely though is QB transfer Carson Haggard from Tulane, who could edge himself up on the competition against veteran QB Maverick McIvor, who came to us from Tech a couple of years ago.

We obviously don't get many transfers except some graduate students.

Not sure if the intent was historical or just for this upcoming season. For this season we got a pretty good QB from the portal, Johnathan Bennett.

https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/citadel/the-citadel-spring-football-practice-johnathan-bennett/article_221bea9e-d7ee-11ee-9380-cf20eab9e73f.html.

He did well at Liberty, starting one season and scoring a couple P5 wins. He is from the low country so it was like coming home for him. Hopefully he can fill a gap we need to get back on track until we can grow a QB from the ranks.

Historically, I think there are two transfers that could battle for one of the best and both came from the lower ranks. WR Johnny Knox came to us from Tyler College and later went on to have a short but great NFL career at Chicago. RB Bernard Scott came to us from Blinn after a stint at Central Arkansas and ended up in the NFL at Cincinnati. Both of them were electric to watch. If you can remember the record breaking, all out offensive, 93-68 ACU vs West Texas A&M 2nd round DII playoff game, then they were a large reason why.

Ever?...for us it's gotta be Aaron Stecker. He was at Wisconsin for two years, where he was set to be their #1 RB...until eventual Heisman winner Ron Dayne showed up. To get more playing time, Stecker transferred to WIU, where he ran for 3,799 yards in just two seasons, including a record-breaking 1,957 yards and 24 TDs in 1997. That rushing record would stand as a Gateway/Missouri Valley Conference record for 15 years until Zach Zenner showed up at SDSU. Stecker finished 2nd in Payton Award voting in 1997 and was named Gateway Offensive POY and Newcomer of the Year. He ended up playing for a year in NFL Europe where he was the league's offensive POY in 2000, then put in 10 years in the NFL with Tampa Bay, New Orleans, and Atlanta.

Not sure if this is suppose to be a historically themed post or current?

For the Mocs historically, I'd say it would hard to not say Jay Pearson from App State. Back to Back DPOY in the SoCon. Seems like the last guy to do that was my old prep school teammate Dexter Coakley (his were national POYs...but still) and he was at App State at the time. Of course MArio Greer in the 90s from clemson was solid, BJ Coleman from UT was helped to change the trajectory of the entire program, Chase Artoepeus from UCLA is looking to make some waves this year...

But if you are talking about the guy that got picked up this past off season, I'm hearing it is EDGE Joseph Bakhole out of ULM or WR Chris Domercant from Stonehill. I also here some pretty solid reports about RB Justus Durant from D2 Shorter.

Hard for me to say just 1 guy b/c IMO we killed it in the portal and with recruiting as well, but transfer IN wise I guess I have to put QB Robertson from Maine at the top of the list just b/c we had an unknown and even tho he may not be a superstar it sure solidifies the spot. But the 2 guys I am REALLY excited about are former Bucknell EDGE Tyler Alston and Sacred Heart linebacker Ernest Howard. Both standout on film.

I will also add that we got a transfer OL from Purdue named Andre Oben (former NY Giant OL Roman Oben's son) and Temple DB Alex Odom.

While we lost out star QB (Miami), DE Juncaj (Arkansas) and Amir Hall (Michigan) IMHO we did get some really good players from much bigger schools transfer in. I think Jared Verse has really helped UA by getting drafted in the first round. Top players are Myles Burkett a QB from Wisconsin, Seven McGee WR from Oregon State/Jackson State and a TE from Indiana (his name is escaping me) who has played in over 20 games I understand.

Biggest impact player was 2014 Indiana QB transfer Tre Roberson who was key to our 2014 Natty run ending in tough loss to Bison. He wound up with 1,029 rush yards and 3,229 pass yards, and easily led MVFC in total yards, as well as FCS. Also led MVFC in QB Rating, inching out Carson Wentz ... who inched out Tre in title game.

But the "best player" would probably be 2010 Wisconsin DT transfer Shelby Harris. Had 3 good years, but was dominant as DTs go in 2012 .. 13 games, 85 tackles, 16 TFLs, 7 sacks. He was 7th round draft pick in 2014 who eventually started every game for 4 seasons (2019-22), and has 71 total starts, and 115 total games played.

Spiders best transfer in might end up being Brandon Peskin K from Fordham. All conference PL

DB John Michael DiRoberto from Wofford
TE Matt Robbert from Cornell

Both these guys are filling holes created by graduation and will likely be starters or certainly see time.

Richmond is not big in transfer market, but take a few each year to fill holes while they build from HS recruits.

Historically for HC probably Gill "The Thrill" Fenerty RB from LSU in the mid-80s. 1-AA All-American, once had 337 yds rushing in a game (albeit vs Columbia)....later RotY in the CFL and a few decent seasons with his hometown NO Saints.

All time, it's Tom Ehrhardt our QB for the 1984 and 1985 seasons.

"THOMAS E. EHRHARDT '86 was the greatest quarterback in Ram football history. In just two years at URI he set nearly every passing record at Kingston and in New England. Ehrhardt was a two-time, first-team All-America (1AA), All-New England, and All-Yankee Conference selection in 1984 and 1985 and Conference Player of the Year in 1985. He led the Rams to a pair of Conference championships and two NCAA playoffs in which the team advanced to the semifinals in 1984. The Rams finished second in the national polls that year and seventh in 1985. Ehrhardt, who won several Golden Helmets, symbolic of the top weekly performance in New England football, is the only football player in Ram history to have his number (12) retired."

This year, we have some intriguing newcomers. Hunter Helms from Clemson is in a battle this summer to replace Kasim Hill at QB. Malik Grant was a productive running back for Sacred Heart and was a FCS Third Team All-American in 2021 and Walter Payton Award finalist. Finally, Carson Primrose from Sacred Heart was just named the 7th best returning FCS defensive tackle by SI after getting second-team All-NEC honors the last two years.

Rhode Island Throws 90 Passes, Loses
Dec. 8, 1985

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Quarterback Bobby Lamb threw four touchdown passes as Furman routed Rhode Island, 59-15, Saturday despite some record passing by the Rams--who threw 90 times in the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinal playoff game.

Tom Ehrhardt of Rhode Island (10-3) completed 39 of 78 passes for 494 yards and 2 touchdowns, breaking the Division I-AA individual record of 75 attempts set by Willie Totten of Mississippi Valley State against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 24, 1984. The NCAA record for all divisions is 79 by Mike Wallace of Division III Ohio Wesleyan against Denison on Oct. 3, 1981.

Rhode Island, as a team, completed 45 of 90 passes for 592 yards but threw 7 interceptions. The attempts broke the NCAA team record of 79 set by Ohio Wesleyan (and Wallace). The yardage total was short of the 599 team mark set by Mississippi Valley (and Totten) against Prairie View on Oct. 27, 1984.

Furman (11-1) will play host to Nevada Reno (11-1) here in the semifinals next Saturday. The Wolf Pack escaped with a 24-23 victory over Arkansas State…

Interestingly, Helms was down to Chattanooga and PWO at Clemson. From what I understand he wanted to sign with UTC...however, is father is "HEAVILY INVOLVED" in any and all decisions and forced the Clemson thing on him. I guess he held the clipboard for about as long as he could stand. Anyway, he was very good in HS, but he hasn't taken a live snap in 3 years....so, who knows what you are getting. I will say that same scenario is exactly what Chattanooga got in Chase Artoepeous last year, and it worked out pretty well for the Mocs!

EDIT: Helms actually has some game experience over the last few years. He has played in 9 games.

Best I can think of off the top of my head in the Portal era is Chris Oladokun. Transferred in to be the QB for the 2021 season after Gronowski got hurt in the spring title game. Had a pretty good season got drafted and is now a backup with the Chiefs and 2x Super Bowl champ. I feel like there might be someone bigger I’m forgetting or didn’t know was a transfer

He had papers on signing day and didn't fax them in. A source on the staff told me they fully expected to see his paperwork that morning, but dad let them know he was headed to Clemson about 2:30 that afternoon. Ironic, UTC had a kid commit early year before before signing day chose to take a chance walk on at UGA instead...Ladd McConkey. That would have been a difficult duo to shut down. HA.

BTW - if Sader87 attended a game in which one Team threw 90 passes in the mid-80’s…still mostly the 3 yards and a cloud of dust era, setting an NCAA record that still should stand, but for some reason is omitted from the record books (http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2022/FCS.pdf), and someone posted something that refreshed your memory of seeing that game, as a Football Fan, you might want to also “pull a FUBeAR” and comment nostalgically on the experience, sharing that experience with the other FCS fans here…even posting a pic from the game with the subject of the OP featured in the photo.

Y’know … sometimes FUBeAR feels as if his work here isn’t appropriately appreciated. If FUBeAR was a Bear of very big feelings, instead of a Bear of very little brain, he might be offended…might be, but probably not.

URI head coach reminiscing about that Furman game:

"In 1985 URI traveled to Furman for the NCAA quarterfinals. Doug Haynes returned the opening kickoff to the Furman 9, but the Rams had to settle for a field goal. Furman returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, the beginning of a 59-15 blowout. Bob has not wondered how the game would have played had Haynes gone all the way, or if Ehrhardt had found somebody in the end zone for a TD pass.
'We knew Furman had a great football team,' he said. 'They beat North Carolina State, 42-14.'"

Why do you think those 90 Pass Attempts by URI are not listed in the NCAA’s Official Record Book?

SFA and the 1 QB who attempted those 85 passes are listed as the holders of the Individual AND Team record.

Ehrhardt wouldn’t hold the individual record because he ‘only’ chunked it 78 times. But Rams named Farley threw 11 and Donnelly threw 1 too…to get to 90 … which is > 85 using FUBeAR math.

That's a great question. My first thought was maybe they weren't counting playoff games, but they included other playoff games. Maybe inaccuracy due to him not playing the whole game? Ehrhhardt should be on this list for both playoff games that year. He threw 78 times against Furman and 70 times against Akron the week before.

As is he's currently 16th all time in FCS yards per game (he was third when he graduated behind Neil Lomax and Willie Totten, both of whom are already in the College Football Hall of Fame. With his passing credentials and leading URI to back to back 10-3 seasons in his two years here he deserves sainthood, never mind a spot in the hall of fame. He went 20-6 here making the playoffs both years, since he graduated URI has gone 129-286 and has only had 8 seasons with winning records out of 38 seasons played. One of those 8 seasons was the 2-1 Covid spring year and we're still waiting for our first trip to the playoffs since 1985.

Might be worth dropping a note to URI’s current SID to seek a correction from the NCAA.

An FU friend of FUBeAR’s did that recently over a missed XP in 1981 and the correction was made…sending his Career XP % from #9 to #1 (or maybe #2) All-Time.

As we get nearer our reward, our earthly legacies, no matter how trivial, seem to just matter more. :)

I recall when Bill O'Reilly, late of Fox News, claimed on TV he led the nation in punting while at Marist...except that Marist football was a club sport at that time.
