First thing that registers on the brain when looking at the poll is only if the PL can woo 'Nova the balance of power will shift in the East.

- Not sold on Delaware as a Top 10 team in their final year in FCS
- South Dakota at #5? Seems generous
- Lafayette is set up well this year...
- A bit strange not to see UNI or UNH

Why Not?

Player motivation and coaching. The combination of the two as UD transitions will lead to way too many moving parts going in different directions. I expect the Hens to have virtually no roster continuity (even by 2024/2025 standards) the next two years. Otherwise, they are going to sink like a rock in FBS without an infusion of talent and/or an upgrade in coaching.

All of that is certainly possible, but so far, going into a season where they’re not gonna be playoff eligible, the roster is pretty much intact. They managed to keep Marcus Yarns at running back. By all accounts, Ryan Carty is doing a good job of keeping the team focused and everything together as the transition starts.

This was my thoughts exactly..and the year before both squads were in the playoffs...and ranked in the top 10. KSU had a similar decline from 11-2 to 5-6. It is less about winning games than it is about building for the future, and getting the younger guys up to speed.

I don't think any team their final FCS year in a no-man-land situation actually faired well.

The mental check out of "there is literally nothing to play for" is real. JMU might be the exception.

Very similar for SDSU as we get 6 of the top 17 after us. This will be a test to see what our ability to reload is and what kind of depth we've developed.

2012 Georgia State 1-10
2013 App State 4-7
2013 Georgia Southern 7-4
2013 Old Dominion 8-4 - only 1 win over a team with a winning record - Liberty who also didn't really beat anyone with a winning record they were mid beating the Big South but never winning a playoff game
2014 Charlotte 5-6
2016 Coastal Carolina 10-2 - didn't beat a single team with more than 6 wins. Liberty, once again, the only team over .500 and they were 6-5
2017 Liberty - their traditional 6-5
2022 Sam Houston 5-4
2022 Jacksonville State 9-2 - played only 1 playoff team - PFL Davidson - who was only in the playoffs because St. Thomas wasn't eligible yet.

In 2021 James Madison went 12-2 and runner up. I removed them from the list because they weren't a transitional year. They announced they were leaving mid season for the following season. Too quick of a turnaround to have a season without being eligible like others.

It would have been much more surprising to see UNH ranked, coming off a 6-5 season with Dylan Laube and Max Brosmer moving on to bigger things. Lindy's Pre-season top half of the CAA may not even be warranted. But really, in the post JMU CAA, none of that seems to make any difference as far as where teams will end up at the end of the season.

right but for 2024 the roster is intact!

2025 who knows.. and Tomorrow Never Knows

Totally agree with you that the Hens will need a serious talent infusion for 2025

stay tuned as you Lehigh TU, just made 2024 more interesting …for me anyway

Why Not?

I think he is correct. Looking at the recent final year or the period after announcing, I'm fairly sure the vast majority of teams that have moved up in the recent past have simply gone through the motions. Many factors, but red shirting, players not wanting to get injured, lots of motivational issues, possible schedule changes, etc probably all contribute. It's obviously not guaranteed that they will tank, but history says it is probable they will slip.

Didn't #19 GW lose 20 players to ETSU along with their HC ??

And didn't #24 Austin Peay lose 19 players to D-I, 11 of which went with their HC to UTEP.

edit: just noticed they both picked up a bunch of FBS transfers with all the schollie money .. still hard to imagine they could be very picky, plus it has to come together with new HC and lot of new players.

Regarding South Dakota .. #5 does seem a little high, but they have a lot coming back. Their crash and burn against NDSU shouldn't be held against them too much .. NDSU was rolling downhill at that point. USD had a nice season and bring a lot back and netted more in Portal.

I doubt North Dakota and Richmond will finish anywhere near 10 and 11.

My ISU Redbirds will surprise this year ... STATS has us #14. I think low 20's is fair for preseason, but have little doubt we could be top 15 team. 17 of 21 starters back, 3 of 4 transfers could easily fill those 4 lost spots. We'll have 55 JRs and SRs next fall ... never had even close to that many before. Went 6-5 with 4 losses by combined 8 pts to all ranked teams a year ago ... UND, YSU, UNI, EIU. Picked up a 4 star FBS QB transfer from K State .. came out ahead in Portal.

I’d put us in the 15-20 range to start the season. FAMU being in the T25 is comical. IW has to prove to me that last year was a fluke before I’ll rank them that high. EIU is an interesting pick at 22.

Right. I forgot just how strange the JMU move was compared to everyone else. I don't know how I forgot that given all the bitching their fan base did when the conference enforced the rules JMU helped put in place because they announced the move 6 months before it happened rather than a year-year and a half like everyone else then wanted special treatment.
