Great radio calls of classic I-AA moments

Because many of Our Subdivision games are not televised, we often rely more on radio coverage. Sometimes I-AA radio broadcasts are really excellent, especially if a nearby major-market radio station handles the production. xsmileyclapx Other times, it's a couple of knuckleheaded undergraduates who sound like their using a pair of Dixie cups and taut string.xarguex

Still, many classic I-AA moments went over the airwaves only on radio. Does anyone have digitized recordings of great I-AA radio calls that they can post here? Is there maybe a Web site for something like this?

Undoubtedly, our friends from Appalachian State will want to post the call of their final play vs. Michigan. It went something like, "AHHHHHHHH! YESSSSSSSSSSSS! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"xhomerx

xtwocentsx I have mixed feelings about this radio call. On the plus side, it's always nice to hear grown men who are professional annoucers going absolutely berserk. At the same time, perhaps it would have been useful to the audience to be told the following facts:

1. The field goal was blocked.
2. The Appalachian State guy recovered it and was running the other way.
3. The clock ran out, and he was tackled.
4. The game is over and Appalachian State has won. (This fact may have been obvious from the ooohs and ahhhs, and I'm sure they got around to mentioning this.)

Perhaps the edit of this we've heard a million times on ESPN is the problem here, and if so, I would stand corrected and apologize to the Appalachian State radio guys.

Anyway, back to the original purpose of this post: Does anyone have any classic audio?xcoffeex

Not sure if anyone on here has it, but they used to play "The Drive" when SHSU came back in the playoffs in the last minute with no timeouts against Eastern Washington, prior to SHSU coming out on the field...that was neat.

Even though there's video footage, the sound is the local radiostation and the voice of JMU: Mike Schikman. The 'NO FLAGS, NO FLAGS' is one of the quotes that has every JMU fan thinking back to this game especially.

The play-by-play guy is calling the play properly but it's pretty tough for the listener to understand exactly what's happening because the analyst's screams are drowning out him out. Considering the magnitude of what's happening, I think these guys are forgiven, don't y'all?

for the record, what the colorman (former ASU standout QB 25+ yrs ago, Steve Brown) is saying during the runback is "it's a yardsale, yardsale @ the bighouse"!

My favorite of all time is the call from the Miracle on the Mountain where App returned the 2 point conversion against Furman to win it. My favorite part is when the analyst yells "We're gonna get flagged here" and the play-by-play response is "WHO CARES!!!" The only link I could find from YouTube of this call has another call that is really good on here. The other call is the fumble recovery that helped send App to their first NC game in 05. This call happens at the 4 minute mark of the video and the Miracle on the Mountain call happens at the 6:05 minute mark on the video.

I didn't realize I made anyone do anything... I even prefaced my message with the exact times in the video the radio calls occur so those that didn't want to watch the whole thing could fast forward through it. I saw on YouTube the video you posted as well but the problem with that was there was no radio call to go along with it and I figured with the subject of this thread being the great radio calls of classic I-AA moments I may want to actually include the radio call in it...

Our former play-by-play man, Nate Hirsch, is my favorite, ever, in any sport. He had a passion for Georgia Southern, not unlike Larry Munson does for uga. It showed in his calls. This is a link to Nate's greatest calls.

Sadly I don't have any links, but in '04 Southern was playing Alcorn State and leading by 4 points. The Jags were set to kick a field goal to seal the game. The kick was blocked and Alcorn was returning the kick for the winning touchdown. The returner decided to lateral the ball but missed his man and fumbled. Southern recovered and won the 24-20. The play-by-play guy literally passed out due to all the excitement. I never laughed so hard at a tense moment.

David Jackson and Steve "Brownie" Brown are two very hardcore ASU supporters. Brown played at ASU & Jackson is an Associate AD.

Kind of weird reading this thread....soon as I finished reading about the ASU - UM outcome, David Jackson is doing an ad on the radio about sports at ASU. The call was a part of of the ad. Kinda ironic haha:D

The one that stands out to me is the Appalachian State - Michigan blocked field goal call.

I nearly died the first time I heard that from laughter.

It was funny how ESPN put it:

I don't have a link, but the best Wofford call I can remember was when Montana's field goal missed in this years' playoffs. The announcers seemed resigned to the fact he'd probably make it, and when it missed, it was jubilation, shock and stunned amazement. I even detected our color guy's voice breaking up over it. Maybe it was great, maybe it was me being a homer, and maybe it was because there was so much more life to it compared to Montana's broadcast that I also listened to some of which was very stoic and lifeless, but that's what sticks out for me atthe moment.

I wonder how many schools have held onto an archive of their old radio broadcasts. I bet a lot haven't. For those who have, they should get some broadcast students to go through them and produce a documentary of classic moments. They could even release entire classic games, either with game film or without.

I, for one, would pay 20 Mike Gottfrieds for the radio broadcast of Morehead's come-from-behind victory at I-A Wichita State in 1986. It was the biggest comeback in Division I history. Morehead was losing 35-6 at halftime. I had been listening to the game, but I said, 'Enough of this!' and (you won't believe this) I went to the library to work on a paper.

When I got back from the library, my fraternity brothers told me what happened. Morehead won 36-35. It was the biggest Division I comeback until 1991, when Nevada-Reno rallied from 35 points down to beat Weber St.

The moral of the story is don't ever leave (or turn off) a game until it's over. Or, at least, Saturdays are for football and not for school work.

A classic audio hightlights tape certainly wouldn't sell as well as a video, but it would be useful to have at tailgate parties.

I guess this is breaking the rules, but my favorite radio call made Sports Center several (15?) years ago. It was a Texas High School playoff game where one team came back from way down, took the lead with just a few seconds left, and lost on a kickoff return. Classic.

Man I wish I had the radio call from 2005 when Coastals Simpson ran out of bounds on 4th down after scrambling around trying to run the clock off and left 4 seconds on the clock. That was all CSU needed to capture a share of it's first ever Big South title. I heard it once and it was wild.
