View Full Version : LSU vs. Ohio State

I'll be watching to see if LSU's offensive line can keep Ohio State out of the backfield. Ohio State is 3rd in sacks (42) and 5th in tackles for loss (391). LSU's offensive line has been bad at keeping down penetration all year. Even Tulane gave it problems.
The Tigers are 73rd in sacks allowed (29) and 55th in tackles for loss allowed (311).

Maybe so, but I can't stand the way Fox insists on cutting away from the field between plays - would much rather watch the players on the field than the 52nd same view of each band...

Networks are getting cheesier and cheesier trying to gain an edge. CBS really grinds my gears with their graphics and whoooomping in and out for every replay. Annoying as hell, and I have e-mailed them telling them how cheap and crappy that practice is.
Whatever happened to just covering the game, and if there is nothing for the commentators to say (most of the time) let us hear the sounds in the stadium.
I would like to flick fresh dung in the direction of most of the commentaries we are made to suffer through in these big televised events anymore.xsmhx

What doesn't help is the broadcasting team. If it's a big game college football game i want to hear some familiar voices, Nessler, Musberger, Franklin etc. Unfortunately Fox doesn't have any. I'm somewhat suprised Joe Buck isn't doing the game with another NFL guy. Tom Brennan and Charles Davis(who i had never heard of) aren't bad but they don't add to the telecast.

Brent Musburger or Bob Griese are my favorite college FB announcers today, but it doesnt quite feel like a big game still without Keith Jackson, the absolute best. I also like Todd Blackledge, he does a very good job.

Those of us who watched the game live on 9/1 know who Charles Davis is.
He and Brenneman also did the OU/Boise game last year. I believe Tom is the son of Marty Brenneman, voice of the Reds. They sound familiar enough to me.

Ohio State needs to recruit better athletes along their offensive line if they want to compete at a championship level. Last year Florida's DL had its' way way with the Buckeyes and LSU's Dline caused them trouble this year.

The Big 10 needs to have their season end 1 or 2 weeks later. They may be able to compete in some of the earlier bowls (including New Years) but to go from Nov. 17 to Jan 7 without a game when the competition last played on Dec 1 is a huge difference.

Exactly. In the last two years I believe that Florida and LSU were of course the better team, but Ohio State isnt as bad as the media will have you believe. They didnt play well either game. I think the most ridicilious assertion is that Ohio State is so much slower tha LSU. OSU recruits incredible athletes as well, and there players drafted by the NFL do as well as any other school out there. The media claims that the SEC is so much better than the Big 10 in every way, but just totally ignore the fact the holy and almighty Florida Gators lost recently to a much maligned Michigan team. Also do we forget that Ohio State beat a Miami team in 2003 that had more NFL players that any other college team in recent memory. Bottom line I believe that overall the SEC has more depth and is stronger than the Big 10, but the bashing by media members is ignorant and incorrect.

Can we sybolically stick a fork in the B10? I mean, in the last year, that conference has been blown out in two NC's, been blown out by two Pac10 teams, been beaten by two FCS teams and lost to a Mac team........Woody and Bo must be rolling in their graves.....outside of having an undefeated team at end of year, they have NO business representing 1/2 of a Nat'l champ game.....USC vs LSU would have been so much better and a more realistic NC game.

Well lets look at the bowl records of the Big Ten vs SEC since 2002
2002:
Music City Bowl: Minnesota 29 Arkansas 14
Outback Bowl: Michigan 38 Florida 30
Citrus Bowl: Auburn 14 Penn State 9
2003:
Outback Bowl: Iowa 37 Florida 17
Music City Bowl: Auburn 28 Wisconsin 14
Capital One Bowl: Georgia 34 Purdue 27
2004:
Music City Bowl: Minnesota 20 Alabama 16
Capital One Bowl: Iowa 25 LSU 20
Outback Bowl: Georgia 24 Wisconsin 21
2005:
Capital One Bowl: Wisconsin 24 Auburn 10
Outback Bowl: Florida 31 Iowa 24*
2006:
Outback Bowl: Penn State 20 Tennessee 10
Capital One Bowl: Wisconsin 17 Arkansas 14
Florida over Ohio State
2007:
Michigan over Florida
LSU over Ohio State
This means since 2002 it is Big Ten 9 wins and SEC 7 wins. What sheer dominance by the SEC, clearly the Big 10 is terrible, isnt that right Appoholic.

Agreed, people get carried away with only looking at part of the data and they draw the conclusions they want from there. And remember, it's really difficult to make sweeping conference assumptions from such a small number of games, and games that are far from being neutral to begin with. Heck, the Big 10 played 5 road games this bowl season - yup, 5 games that were pretty much home games for their opponents - and the Big 10 went 3-2 in those road games. Hey, I'll be the first to say the Big 10 has its warts (Minnesota and Iowa for instance) but to think they are a terrible conference just from cherry picking a few results that went against them, while ignoring the games they did win and where the games were held, is silly. xpeacex

Put that into the bigger picture.
Florida was good this year but they had already been exposed as a very young team playing within the SEC earlier this season.
Michigan was supposed to be National Championship material THIS YEAR while Florida was in rebuilding mode with a team of Soph's and Junior's.
Michigan was in a dog fight with this Florida team and barley won the game.
Florida won't be no joke next year.

Your contradicting yourself. First you say all that matters is what happens in 2007 by pointing out the SEC bowl record this year. Then you give a historical figure saying OSU is 0-9 all time. So whats your point, do you want to look at historical facts or just this year? Once again Cherry picking facts for your argument and ignoring others.

I know the Big10 is a HISTORICALLY strong conference...surely no one disputes that ....and I like the Big10. However, I'm speaking more of the media's overhyping the conference teams based upon that historical strength:
-Michigan vs OSU (2006): Billed as the early national championship; Michigan loses a nailbiter
-Michigan vs USC (2007 Rose Bowl): Michigan, pissed off by not being picked for rematch NC game against OSU, decides to take it out on USC....whoops, loses 4th bowl game in as many years.....and didn't just lose, but was taken behind the wood shed.....
-Florida vs OSU (2007 BCS Championship): In spite of the media's declaration, Florida decides to show up and make OSU at least break a sweat on the way to their NC coronation....whoops, Florida embarrases OSU in spectacular fashion....USC shakes their head....
-Michigan vs APP (2007 opener): scheduled as a scrimmage tune-up for #5's NC run in honor of Mr Long, Mr Hart and Mr Henne....well, we know the rest
-Michigan vs Oregon: at home for the 2nd week in a row, Mich looks to rebound against preseason #3 Pac10 team......and not only lose, but set records for pts allowed and total offense allowed......
-Illinois vs. USC: the Big10's rep for the prestigious Rose Bowl shows better than Michigan did the year before in a laugher.....barely
-OSU vs LSU: OSU starts out strong in an effort to exorcise the Florida demons from the year before.....and then promptly give up 31 unanswered points......
I know this can be considered cherry-picking, but these three programs were the flagship football teams for the Big 10 over the past 2 years.....and I didn't bring up Wisconsin's lose to (Phil Fulmer coached) UT team or Minnesota's lose to NDSU.......the Big10 is a shadow of it's former self......I don't doubt this will change in future....Tressel's a good coach, Rodriguez will update UM's offense, Zook will contnue to recruit well.....but the best team OSU faced prior to LSU was their practice squad.....

I never defended Ohio State, just the Big 10 in general. OSU got outplayed big time. Again I guess they dont teach reading comp at J State

They gonna be back to ripping teams up also.
Well, Ohio St only had 2 senior starters while LSU had 12 - does the same apply there as well then??? xcoolx

yep.
And as soon as Ohio State and their seasoned players meet another TOP SEC team, ( xlolx hell---mid-level for what it's worth xlolx ), in a bowl game, the result will be the same. xlolx
Ohio State had veteran's last year AND the Heisman Throphy winner and what good did it do them.
0-9 man................0-9. xlolx

Ohio State needs to recruit better athletes along their offensive line if they want to compete at a championship level. Last year Florida's DL had its' way way with the Buckeyes and LSU's Dline caused them trouble this year.
I'm going to start a thread about this but if you go by how many players programs put into the NFL Ohio State typically has more talent than LSU, Florida, or anybody in the SEC. Why they can't beat SEC teams is a mystery to me.

I think one of the factors in this game is that LSU was healthy for the first time since the start of its second game of the season. In fact, we may have seen an LSU team that was slightly better than the one that blew out Virginia Tech in the opening game. They had all their players healthy except a defensive tackle that went out for the season early, and everything I've heard from the LSU community indicates Ricky Jean-Francois, the guy who blocked the field goal, is better. In fact, it's been reported that LSU coaches have said that Jean-Francois is better than Dorsey. He'd been suspended for off the field problems and played his first game of the season againt Tennessee.
Another factor is that Ohio State made a lot of critical mistakes.
A third factor is that LSU, uncharacteristically for this season, did NOT make a lot of mistakes. Before this game, LSU was characerized by numerous penalties, dropped passes, etc. This time, they dropped zero passes and only had 30 something yards in penalties.
In short, LSU played what was probably its best game of the year with its best team of the year in terms of who was on the field healthy at the start.
