Appalachian State dominates 2007 Sports Network All-America squad

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Fresh off an unprecedented third consecutive national championship, Appalachian State pulled off some more history with a record 11 selections to the 2007 Sports Network FCS All-America squad announced on Saturday.

The Mountaineers bested the previous high of eight players and nine positions won by Marshall on the 1996 All-America squad. Randy Moss was named as a wide receiver and kick returner on that team.

ASU senior free safety Corey Lynch, who placed second to Montana defensive end Kroy Biermann by five points in the closest Buck Buchanan Award balloting in history, was one of three players who were nearly unanimous picks on the 2007 All-America squad.

Another pretty solid All-American team, but...

<bitterness>

Dan Carpenter third team is a joke.

He makes game-saving kicks all year long, but the last one defines him to everyone else. xnonono2x

I'd bet Striefsky and Rauch would have a much harder time even making it to the goalpost in that weather.

I agree. Drago has to be there. You can't blame Coulson for this but some of the voters are obviously clueless on him. He is going to the Senior Bowl for Christ sakes.

8-3 record
3rd ranked scoring offense
1st in punt return TDs

Not a single player on any team.

Wynton Jackson is one of three people with multiple punt retuns for TDs and isn't on a single list?

Gilchrist - TD every 6.67 returns
Gray - TD every 18 returns
T. Jackson - TD every 6 returns
Weeden - TD every 15 returns
W. Jackson - TD every 8.5 returns

Dominic Bolden was second in KR Avg and wasn't on a single list. I guess people being afraid to kick to him hurt him from getting any awards.

Rashad Jennings 6th in scoring, not on a list.

I'm not even asking for first or second team, but one of those three players deserved at least 3rd team.

I also think that Jada Ross (CSU) should've made one of the teams with a billion tackles this year. He was tied for 6th in terms of tackles/game for linebackers.

(Edit: This is not me knocking any of the players who actually did make the teams. I just feel that one of these three are good enough for a mention.)

Estrada from GSU didn't hold Mitch Erickson's jockstrap in the SDSU-GSU game. That is a travesty that Mitch Erickson didn't make it. He's a first team all-american in the AFCA voting and doesn't make any of these three teams. Get a goddamn clue. Nate Safe from NDSU is a good lineman but Erickson was the best lineman in the GWFC this year and isn't on the team. I'm sure many other people were snubbed, but Erickson is one of the premier guards in the country.

In the last two rounds ASU was much better. ASU got better each week of the playoffs. I think it would be scary to see this team still playing. They were fully healthy by the title game and looked very impressive. I also think JMU was better than their final rank. Had JMU not fumbled I believe they would have won the title. You guys played ASU more even than anyone else in the last 6 weeks of their season.

Even being an App fan I am surprised by this... Armanti Edwards makes 2nd team over Payton finalists Santos and Sanders who aren't on the list at all? Same with Bryan Smith being 2nd team while Anthony Williams garners 1st team honors? Pierre Banks may have deserved AA status but not 1st team... Julian Rauch wasn't a bad kicker but did he even attempt 15 field goals all year? Granted he did have about 200 XP tries but I know he missed on at least two of those to my recollection and I think there were some field goals blocked down the stretch too, not too mention poor kick-offs (not sure if that counts to the place kicker status of All-Americans but it should)... MANY question marks on this list...

I think Jacque is deserving of an honorable mention but agree with you on Robertson and Smith... Robertson had good games but was not solid the whole year and Smith only started the second half of the season; although he really did start playing to an all-american level when he got some experience under his belt (and I am guessing he will be an all-american the next three years) but it needs to be the whole year not just part of the year that this voting should be based on...

None of the defensive ends listed as NFL prospects at the site http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/rankings/de.html made the first team. Two of them did make the second team.

Interesting that Hampton has two defensive ends listed at that site as NFL prospects. Neither made either first or second team though.

I was interested in defensive end for obvious reasons (Bryan Smith). But I wonder how similar assessment of all positions would turn out...that is if you looked at which FCS players are listed as NFL prospects and noted the number of occasions in which players that aren't listed as such made the All America team when others at the same position appear to be more highly regarded as potential players at the next level.

Cal Poly had the number one offense in the FCS (487 yds/gm) and the sixth scoring offense (39.3 pts/gm) and only had one player on the first team (Ramses Barden) and one on second team (Stephen Field). Interesting.

I expect that there will be many more on next year's All-American teams because 10 of 11 starters return on offense.

I don't know if surprised is the word but I would not have anticipated it because they weren't that good statistically on defense this year. At first glance they appear to have won because their outstanding offense was powerful enough to overcome having a mediocre defense. They finished 70th in total defense and 63rd in scoring defense.

Part of that might be because of having played four playoff teams as well as Michigan but even if you just look at regular season FCS opponents it was 376 yards and 27 points per game. Those numbers would correspond to 68th in total defense and 65th in scoring defense in the final NCAA defensive stats.

Agreed!! Now, the big question is exactly how many years of eligibility does he have left? He's listed on the roster on the UNH web site as a sophomore. But in the UNH game notes for the UNI Playoff game, that roster lists Scott as a Redshirt Freshman.

I sure don't recall Sicko playing much, if at all, as a true freshman. Maybe he was playing special teams and I didn't notice.

See many of us think that a NFL prospect has to be on the AA team but when you think about it that is not always true. Langford had a bit of a down year and the other Hampton DL did not have great numbers. Both are more projections than anything. Size doesnt make you an All-American and Langford wouldn't be a NFL prospect if he was 6'1. Being 6'6, 295 helps getting looks. Biermann, Smith, Johnston, etc. have all had better years this year but Langford has more upside than those two, because of his size.

Someone made a good point before about their defense. While they have been soft in the middle this year you have to consider the time they spend on the field. When an offense scores in 30 seconds, 1 minute, or even 2 minutes like ASU did many times this year, it is almost like a 3 and out. When the offense scores in just 4-7 plays the defense gets tired and might give up plays they wouldn't have given up before.

I agree that there were too many defenders on the AA list from ASU, but I also believe they were better than people have tabbed them. They came up big when they were need to come up big and did not let the other team outscore them. ASU had a GREAT offense and a solid, not great, but solid defense. Next year's defense returns everyone in the front seven. They should be a lot better up front next year.

He had nothing to do with that. He is just one voter. You have to remember when these teams were voted on. Unlike last year, ballots were sent out after the playoffs. V

oters were asked to fill out a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team this year. In years past you would only vote for 5 OL and this year you voted for 15. This year 6 RBs were voted, instead of 4. There were 9 LBs voted unlike past years where there were just 4.

When a team wins a 3rd title in a row and voters don't vote until after the playoffs, you will see more players from that team make it than they would had you only voted on a 3rd team. The Richmond OL that made the team was only a 2nd team All-CAA pick.

There were a lot of picks on there from ASU, Richmond, Delaware, etc. who went very far in the playoffs. McNeese, Montana, and UNI did not have as many on there because they did not do well in the playoffs. I think the playoffs are at "fault" here, if you are pointing blame at something. Most people didn't know how voting changed and when it was done this year.

Does that clear up why more ASU players made it than before?

Surprised by the number of App players only because the voting for TSN is always conducted before the playoffs in the past. Unless this A-A is unlike every other and includes playoffs?

It was done after the playoffs. That is a HUGE reason for more ASU, UD, Richmond players, etc.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erickson's name is listed NOWHERE in the official game stats either in the form of tackles or participation.

Somebody's got some 'splainin' and apologizin' to do... xnonono2x

Last time I looked offensive guards don't usually get listed in the official game stats.

I was a bit miffed that Erickson didn't get mentioned either as one of the top six guards in the nation but then it hit me. These all american teams are like FCS polls, they are everywhere and not one of them can claim to truly be definitive. For a division that settles things on the field we sure seem to be enamoured with polls and opinion. .

Very true. I am going to take all of the AA teams from the media and do a concensus list. I am going to give 1 pt for 3rd team, 2 for 2nd team, and 3 for 3 team. It might be interesting to see how the AA team would look if you combined 3-5 media outlets. So far the AP and TSN have 1st-3rd teams while the AFCA and Walter Camp have just a 1st team. CSN does a full list of 50. CSN will be harder to calculate because they don't list the OL of the year or DEF POY on the actual team.

Ralph, how do you want that calculated? You have 50 guys so I was thinking of picking a 1st team and 2nd team on yours? For the positions like LS who only have one player I was going to just give that player a 1st team vote.

Honorable Mention....

DE- Tony Robertson, ASU
LB- Jacque Roman, ASU...D.J. Smith, ASU

Let's see....8 ASU defenders named All-America.xeekx

Anyone surprised?xnonono2x

Yeah these guys suck. Remember ASU plays in the SoCon, which is arguably the best offensive conference in the FCS. It's easy to make a general statement without actually watching these guys play.xcoffeex

Corey Lynch - there is no argument stats aren't necessary
Pierre Banks, LB - 108 Tackles, 7 TFL, 2.5 Sacks, 6 Pass Breakups
Gary Tharrington, DE - 84 Tackles, 18 TFL, 5 Sacks, 7 QB Hurries
Anthony Williams, DT - 74 Tackles, 11 TFL, 5 Sacks
Jerome Touchstone - his stats aren't impressive, but that's because no one throws to his side of the field, he has been a shutdown corner for 3 years.

Tony Robertson, DE - 62 Tackles, 15.5 TFL, 5.5 Sacks
Jacque Roman, LB - 127 Tackles, 5.5 TFL
DJ Smith, LB - 121 Tackles, 5.5 TFL, 11 Pass Breakups, 2 INTs

6 of these guys are back next year.:D

Of course they don't suck, but there are plenty of players with impressive stats not listed on that team. Few would debate that ASU's defense was not their strength this year. For 6 of their front seven to make AA after ranking 87th in the division against the run is a bit much. Just because your team wins the NC doesn't automatically make everyone on the squad an All-American. Unless your name is Coulson, of course.

I just feel that one of these three are good enough for a mention.)

perhaps if the little south played anyone they would get some recognition. since you don't.... you don't.

Defensive Player of the Year: Corey Lynch, Appalachian State, S, 6-0, 205, Sr., Cape Coral, FL
Offensive Lineman of the Year: Kerry Brown, Appalachian State, G, 6-6, 310, Sr., Marietta, GA

The "50" includes those POY. None of the AA teams name an Offensive Lineman of the Year, Playoff Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year etc. EXCEPT CSN and only one besides CSN names an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year (not to mention Coach of the Year). So I don't understand what you're talking about.

They're all a "first team" - there is no "second team" for the CSN "Fabulous 50". You can count it for your purposes how you want, but they were all picked as a first team.

Okay I will give everyone a 1st team vote. I was thinking since you list the team below the POY honorees that it I might need to give some people a different point total. I will give everyone a 1st place vote on the team.

I understand your point, but I went back and looked at the players one by one, but couldn't really decide which one if any I'd take off the list. They might not have been the best defensive team, but it is hard to argue the individual performances by these guys. BTW only 5 of them actually made the three All-America teams, I think all 5 of these guys could start anywhere is the country.

Remember the name DJ Smith - LB though, he will be a staple on the AA lists. He's the best LB I've seen at ASU since Dexter Coakley.

Smith and EJ Webb of GSU both are going to be forces in the SoCon and FCS for the next 3 years. They are TWO OUSTANDING talents. I would give the edge to Smith because of the season he put up over the last 6 games. Smith was arguably one of the top 10 LBs in the nation by the end of the year. He will be a draft pick for sure. If he can get down to the 4.4 40 range, he should be better than Coakley. Yes, I said better.
