Why would he do this? Hawaii is a much better gig than SMU.

Thoughts?

Agreed. The WAC is a stronger conference than Conference USA as well.

I don't see why he'd do this unless he wants to be on the mainland to get more personal exposure and maybe get one more crack at a big-time job.

Familiarize himself with a more fertile recruiting area in order to have more assets for a big-time Texas job? Plus with SMU being private, their pay could be quite a bit better.

ECU, Tulsa, Houston, Southern Miss, Memphis would OWN the WAC. The WAC has friggin Idaho and New Mexico State. C-USA kills the WAC. Oh, and ECU did beat Boise State as well.

East Carolina is a recent good team. Southern Miss and Tulsa are the only teams that I will give any kind of consideration of domination. Boise State had a down year and will be back.

I can't even imagine living on a relatively tiny island & having nowhere to escape to or even drive to to get away. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Hawaii.

agreed wholeheartedly. Nice place to visit (except Oahu). I would NOT want to live there.

Hawaii has much bigger issues than the coaches salary not being able to match other schools -- they have scheduling issues thanks to the success June Jones has had and facilities issues. And from what I've seen on Hawaii's Scout board...the AD is not so well-liked over there (the legislature of the state even brought him in to criticize him)...

The WAC finished 6 (6!) spots higher than CUSA this year in Sagarin. CUSA finished behind the SoCon and CAA this year and one spot ahead of the GWFC. The WAC was clearly much better this year and has finished higher than CUSA 3 of the last 4 years.

And SMU is supposedly offering $2 mil a year. I think maybe even I could stand a move to Texas for that kind of money

If one is going to make a move, you do it when you're 'up' and Jones won't get any more 'up' than he got this year with Hawaii. Probably several reasons behind the move: $, relationship with AD, want shot a bigger program (either he turns SMU into its storied past, or he moves again in another few years).

He has been bang'en the university about their poor facilities as of late, saying publically how outdated they are and they have no recruiting budget and that they use ESPN to do their recruiting for them because they can't afford to recruit off of the island themselves.

IMO, I think he just wants a new gig. He has had a lot of assistant coaches and coordinators coming and going the past few years andI'm sure he thinks it time for him to move on as well and reap the rewards of his recent successes and move on. I don't think Hawaii is set up all that well for the future either.

For C-USA to be taken seriously as a conference ECU has to maintain their high level of play. They seem to be a very up and down program. SoMiss, Memphis and Alabama-Birmingham need to raise up their level of play and be more consistant programs too and so does Marshall. Marshall could be on the verge of having a few great seasons. They have some very exciting young players back from a team that showed a lot of improvement as the season went on.

I also think they should also pick up UCF.

The East Carolina was lucky to beat Boise State. Four turnovers and a horrible game and they still almost won. If they play again, Boise has the talent to just murder them.

Also, Hawai'i, Fresno State, and Nevada have been very competitive recently.

In my opinion, the WAC and Mountain West are the two best non-BCS conferences.

Memphis couldn't even compete with the freaking SUNBELT champ.

The WAC is far ahead overall of the C-USA the past few seasons.

The C-USA hasn't had a team sniff the top 25 since Louisville left.

June Jones resigned from Hawaii today, citing "a lack of commitment from athletic department leaders, among other reasons..."

Hawaii might be a great place to live, and you an argue the merits of the WAC vs. CSU, but if his own institution doesn't offer support, I don't blame his decision to take considerably more money and resources.

Here's the article that all the others are based upon, from the Honolulu Advertiser...

June Jones resigns as UH coach

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer
June Jones has resigned as University of Hawai'i head football coach, according to his close friend, Al Souza.

Jones resigned this morning, citing among other things a lack of loyalty and commitment from athletic department leaders.

"This breaks his heart," Souza said of Jones' decision to leave.

Jones also sent letters to friends announcing that he is resigning after nine seasons. He thanked his friends for their support in the letter, in which he listed several reasons why he would no longer coach at the school. Full details of the letter were not available.

That's probably not most of the equation -- figure, most of it has to do with commitment from AD to facilities, recruiting and more...

The same Nevada that played well at BSU so everyone in the country thought they finally found a football team? I'll give you Hawaii, FSU and BSU, but outside those three and an occational decent team out of San Jose, but that's it.

ECU owned that game and let BSU play catch-up in the second half to make it a game. They were clearly the more talented teamon the field that day. C-USA may be down right now, but they will be much improved next year and for years to come will prove they are a better conference from top to bottom or East and West than the WAC.

I agree, those things off set the difference in location, doubling the salary potential is a deal closing item though IMO.

Throw in the possibility that he has taken Hawaii as far as may be possible, while SMU is a build up from the ground opportunity. June is a competitor, and I think he would be happier building a down program than trying to maintain a program that is peaked out.

You may hypothesize that CUSA will be better in the future, but the WAC has clearly been superior based on actual performance in recent years

It's getting bad on the island...

Mayor is wishing the university was under his control, so he could have done something about it...

State Rep is pissed with the AD who said in May they working on the contract extension...guess that wasn't true.

Fun times!

Problems at SMU...from the PonyFans board...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, guys, but I have been told as of about 45 minutes ago, that something has come up and what looked to be a done deal for Jones, is no longer the case.

In fact, it might be less than 50-50 now. I've been told that SMU wants this thing put to bed one way or another by 8 p.m. tonight and they do have a standby candidate -- Coach Fran.
