UMass once had a strong team...then dropped the sport completely...

Restarted with a club team that has grown to full status, and is doing quite well...

Is hockey popular in Montana...I know Minnesota and the Dakotas are huge in the sports...

Hockey is popular here in Missoula, due to a large number of transplants, but I wouldn't say it has a large following across the state; some cities do have successful junior teams.

I wouldn't say its huge in ND, only 20 high schools and one university have an official team. Its popular but hardly huge. Nothing compared to Minnesota.

The University of GA, Georgia Tech, the University of Florida and Florida State all have club teams that get together in Savannah one weekend each year with one of the GA teams playing one of the FL teams on Friday night and then swapping on Saturday night. I do believe that's probably the only ice hockey played within at least 100 miles of here each year (maybe more, but Jacksonville had a minor league team at one time and may still for all I know), and I doubt that the quality is very good, but they pack the house.

Probably a bit of a trek, but Alabama-Huntsville has a D-I program. They're not bad, made the Tournament last season

That Clarkson-St. Lawrence trek is one of the most difficult road trips in all of college sports!!! Not quite as bad for you guys out there on the NY Tundra, but still a brutal trip. Three points is very impressive!

And when Raider says "North Country", he isn't kidding!! We're talking about two towns north of the Adirondack Park in upstate NY! xeekx Yes, there are actually towns inhabited up there in the St. Lawrence River Valley! Potsdam and Canton, NY are NOT places you want to drive to in January!!!

Lucky for us this weekend, the games were at home

I went up last March when Colgate played St. Lawrence for an ECAC Playoff Round. It is incredibly desolate up there. Very depresssing to be in, actually. There's really nothing to do up there but play hockey and drink. And we did plenty of both...

The UND Fighting Sioux seems to have begun what has been a typical second half surge for them. They have won 5 of the last 6 (6 of 8 when you include the New Hampshire series) and play against perennial cellar-dweller Alaska Anchorage next weekend in Grand Forks. (can't take them lightly though) Hopefully the trend continues into a huge series against Minnesota in Minneapolis two weeks from now.

Colgate splits on the weekend at home, facing the Brown/Yale travel pair

On Friday, a tight first period degenerated rapidly, as Yale cruised to a 6-1 victory. Swept by the Bulldogs this year xbangx

On Saturday, Colgate did the cruising, knocking off Brown 5-0. David McIntyre scored twice, and Mark Dekanich got the shutout, his 3rd of the season and 8th of his career. Those 8 shutouts ties the school record held by his predecessor in the Raider net, Steve Silverthorn

Colgate takes 3 points on the tough North Country trip, the first time they've done that since 2001-02

On Friday, Tyler Burton scored twice in the opening 3 minutes, then Colgate held on for dear life to grab a 2-1 victory at St. Lawrence. It was their first win in Appleton since the aforementioned 01-02 season. The victory was also the 250th career win for head coach Don Vaughn. He needs 2 more wins to pass Terry Slater as the all-time winningest coach in school history

On Saturday, Dekanich backstopped Colgate to a 0-0 tie at nationally-ranked Clarkson. The shutout was the 9th of his career, which breaks Steve Silverthorn's school record. This was the 4th consecutive year that the two teams have tied in Potsdam, the 5th consecutive season that Clarkson has failed to win in Potsdam, and the 5th tie there in the last 7 years. This was also the 2nd 0-0 tie in Colgate history, the first coming at Yale in 2005

Brown came back to score with about 3 minutes left, and the game went overtime, but Clarkson scored in the last minute to take the win. we are now 3-17-4, with a game against St. Lawrence tomorrow.

A 4 point weekend at last!

Colgate dominated RPI on Friday, Dekanich pitched the shutout in a 4-0 victory. Relatively unexciting game, but a nice win because none of the points came from our top 2 scorers. Depth has been a problem this year, so that's huge for us

Saturday, the roof came off. The Raiders blasted Union 8-0. Dekanich with another shutout, giving him 3 in a row and 6 on the season (both new school records), and has run his shutout streak to 212:26, a Colgate and ECAC record. He's been nothing short of amazing these last two weeks. Almost lost in the excitement, Don Vaughn won his 252nd career game, passing the legendary Terry Slater for the most all-time in school history. Huge night in Colgate hockey history, no doubt :)

With the 2 wins, the Raiders improve to 7-7-4 in the ECAC, still in 8th, but now 2 points behind teams 5-7 and 3 points behind Cornell in the important 4th spot. Colgate jumps above .500 for the year, they're now 13-12-5

Next weekend, last regular season road trip for the Raiders as they head to the southern-most ECAC travel partners. They'll battle a tough Princeton Tigers team on Friday night, then the struggling Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday afternoon

Wild weekend for Colgate, but 2 points is 2 points

On Friday, the Raiders were blitzed by Princeton 7-2. Colgate hung with the Tigers for the first two periods, trailing only 3-2. In the 3rd, however, the floodgates opened in a big way.

On Sunday afternoon, Colgate got back on track with a 4-3 overtime win at Quinnipiac. Birthday boy Peter Bogdanich got the game winner in a sloppy back-and-forth affair.

Colgate's record in ECAC play remains at .500, 8-8-4. Their 20 points ties them with Yale for 7th, but the Eli swept the season series, giving them the tiebreaker. Colgate is still mathematically alive for 4th place and a first round bye. They have also clinched at least 8th, getting a first round home series. Overall record remains steady at 14-13-5

Next weekend, Colgate closes out the regular season at home facing Harvard on Friday night 2/29, then closing with Dartmouth on the afternoon of Sunday 3/1

With 2 games left for each team, the ECAC standings are vaguely clearer.
-Clarkson and Princeton will finish 1-2, and they'll play on Friday night at Clarkson to determine the regular season title.
-Every team from Harvard to Colgate is still alive for a 1st round bye, and have all at least clinched a 1st round home series.
-The bottom 4 teams, Dartmouth, RPI, Brown and SLU are all eliminated from getting a home game. They'll be on the road when the playoffs start in 2 weeks.

Hard to believe last year's regular season champion (SLU) sits at the bottom of the standings. Meanwhile last year's bottom feeder (Union) is near the top of the standings. Go figure.

Just got back from the Quinnipiac/Colgate game at TD Banknorth Sports Center. Rough weekend for the Bobcats with the two OT losses. We needed this one today to get back into the top 4. Now we have to head up to Clarkson and SLU to get the job done, and hope for a little help from Harvard, Union and Cornell's opponents.

Brown blew a game they should have won tonight against RPI. Brown was up 1-0 with 2 minutes left, just 2 minutes from Brown's first shutout of the season. Then, Brown gave up 2 goals within the next 30 seconds to lose 2-1. We are now 5-19-4, and we face Union tomorrow night to close out the regular season.

RPI 2, Brown 1
Clarkson 4, Princeton 3

3-3, Harvard vs. Colgate

Going into the last day last season, RPI had 29 different possible scenarios that could have played out and affected their standing in some different way. For 1 day's worth of games!

Quinnipiac can finish no higher than 6th and no lower than 7th. That means we'll be home next weekend against either SLU, Dartmouth or Brown for the first round.

Hard to believe Quinnipiac was fighting for first place just a few weeks ago. This current 5-game losing streak, along with some key injuries, has pushed us to the middle of the pack. I can deal with QU's recent losses to Harvard, Cornell and Colgate. But the lopsided losses to Dartmouth and St. Lawrence? Totally unacceptable.

Well, that was mildly disappointing xrolleyesx

Friday night, Colgate and Harvard battled to a 3-3 tie. The Raiders led 3-2 in the 3rd, but the Crimson were able to knot it up. Dekanich made a key save with 1 second left in the OT to secure the point.

I'll go on record (if I haven't already) of saying that I hate afternoon hockey games, especially when Colgate is at home. They put plenty of shots on net, but the PP (as usual) looked inept and the Penalty-Kill was far from effective. Dartmouth goes 4-5 on the PP as the Big Green beat a lackluster Raider team 5-2.

Colgate finishes the regular season at .500 with an overall record of 14-14-6. In the ECAC, the Raiders finish at 8-9-5, their 21 points being good for 8th after Yale's victory today

Next weekend, the playoffs begin. Colgate will host St. Lawrence in Starr Rink for a Best 2 of 3 series. Games are Friday and Saturday night, then Sunday night if necessary. This will be the 4th ever playoff series between the two schools, all coming in the last 6 seasons. Colgate won the two held in Hamilton (2003, 2004), while SLU won up in Canton (2007)

Union's is especially surprising given they've never won a playoff series, let alone get a bye, since jumping to D-I in 1994 xeekx

-Cornell misses out on a bye for the first time since 1999. They host Dartmouth, who is travelling after earning a bye for 5 of the last 6 seasons

I was there. I have season tickets in Section 102, over near the Quinnipiac bench. I saw about a half dozen fans sporting Brown hockey jerseys across the way. Too bad QU students are on break, otherwise we would've had a much bigger crowd than the 1,900 that was announced. At least the pep band was there, albeit just a few members of it.

Good game, but frustrating too. Last night was the third straight home game where Quinnipiac gave up a goal in the closing seconds. Two weeks ago, we lost to Cornell with 17 seconds left in OT, the next night we lost to Colgate with under a minute left in OT, then last night we allowed a game tying goal with 5.4 seconds left. And if that wasn't enough, SLU scored the game tying goal with 0.5 seconds in Hamden back in November!

This QU team isn't the same team from early in the year that was beating the likes of Clarkson, Princeton (twice), Western Michigan and Vermont. We're basically limping into the playoffs and we were VERY lucky to skate away with the victory last night.

Typical SLU-'Gate playoff series xcoolx

On Friday, Colgate came out flat and got what they deserved. They were blitzed by the Saints to the tune of 5-2. 3 SLU goals came on shots from the point in an all-around dismal effort

On Saturday, with their season on the line, the Raiders came back strong, picking up a 3-2 win. An early 2nd period goal by SLU to tie the game was quickly answered, and Colgate would gut out the remainder of the game for the win

On Sunday, Colgate jumped out to the lead, never looking back en route to a 3-1 victory and a 2-1 series win over the Saints. For the 3rd time, SLU comes down to Hamilton for a playoff series and wins the 1st game, only to lose the next two and the series

Colgate's record improves to 16-15-6. A win next weekend guarantees the Raiders a .500 record for the season

Next weekend, Colgate heads to the North Country to take on the Clarkson Golden Knights, ECAC Regular Season Champs and the League's #1 seed. Winner of the best 2 of 3 series heads to Albany for the ECAC Championships

This is the time of the year where you are proud of your team not only for their play on the ice, but when you read stories like this:

http://www.fightingsioux.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=13500&ATCLID=1412063

10 players named to the All-Academic team, tops in the WCHA for the second straight year.

This past season the Sioux hockey team has been attacked by other fan bases and their media-types for some news made off of the ice, and a false perception was created in the upper midwest regarding the type of players that play Sioux hockey. While the off-ice incidences were unacceptable, no denying that, the young men that play Sioux hockey are great players in the community and apparently in the classroom.

Just like MOST self respecting Wildcat fans, I too dislike the Beagles. But UNH only has itself to blame for that debacle last night. They had a 4-1 lead and started taking stupid penalties. And I think the "defense" kind of left Regan hung out to dry. Let's hope they got all this merde out of their system.

Everything I've read and heard said BC was a lock for the NCAA regardless of the outcome of last night's game. They're definitely in now. Let's hope that UNH keeps their top four spot and plays in Worcester.

Yes, I believe the Beagles sweep of Providence changed things. And the conference semi-final and final games this weekend will probably change everything again. The good news is that UNH is a lock for the NCAA and according to one article on USCHO, they couldn't drop out of the top four this weekend even with the loss to UCH.

The early speculation by the Minnesota media last night, and similar to what this morning's bracketology session predicted was that Minnesota, North Dakota, Boston College and Princeton will find themselves in the Northeast region.

Minn, ND and BC always seem to find each other in the National Tournament every year. For the last 3 seasons MN and ND have been in the same region. ND and BC have had themselves a nice little rivalry going on the national stage as well.

It's a ranking system done by computer. The ranking, the PairWise, can be seen here: http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pwr.php, and an explanation of how it all works here: http://www.uscho.com/FAQs/?data=pwrexplanation

There is no rule that says a below .500 team can't make the tournament if they finish high enough in the PairWise, and Wisconsin did it. Might get looked at in the offseason though... xwhistlex

According to the committee, they were trying to protect the top 2 teams. They didn't want to send one of them to Madison or Colorado Springs because those sites are hosting regionals. So that left the next 2 #1s to possibly have to get through hosts Wisconsin or Colorado College to the Frozen 4

Yeah, and something about bracket integrity too. UNH is the overall #4 and is now in the regional with the overall #5 (Colorado College). And IIRC they kept #3 with #6 with these pairings as well. The rule mandating that host teams are placed in that regional really hinders the true seeding (#1-#16, #2-#15, etc.) as well as placing the number one seeds as close to home as possible.

UNH only has themselves to blame as they spit the bit Friday night in Boston. Come on, a 4-1 lead should have been sufficient! They win that game, they remain the #3 team and probably get placed in Worcester.

At least by playing at Colorado College, they'll be on an olympic sized rink like at the Whittemore Center. And we did play CC last season out there so it isn't a completely foreign site. And they did beat CC twice in Durham way back in October. But take that with a grain of salt because they had also beat the UCH Beagles three times during the regular season. xrolleyesx

Wisconsin is a member of the WCHA which got six teams into the tournament. The strength of the conference got them that bid. And guess what, the first team left out was also a member of the WCHA -- Minnesota State (Mankato). And this sub .500 team got a three seed in a regional which means they were ranked as a top twelve team in the sixteen team field.

The NCAA did "break" the rule about no games against conference mates in the first round though as the Badgers will face conference mate Denver.

Believe it or not the Gophers are actually my 2nd favorite team. I always cheer for them when they aren't playing against the Sioux. I take great pride in the fact that these two schools have combined to win 10 of the last 34 NCAA championships. Add my 3rd favorite team (Wisconsin) into the mix and it becomes 16 of the last 35. After those three I have no particular pecking order within the conference, but I always enjoy seeing the conference represented well. I love the WCHA. Agree. I've always wanted to see a game at Yost. I hear the crowd is nuts there

Michigan was picked to finish 5th this year in the CCHA so they definitely have overachieved

Any idea if the early rounds will be televised nationally?

For the Twin cities folks, the Minneapolis Star Tribune indicates that FSN will carry North Dakota's first round game on Saturday afternoon and the Gophers first round game on Saturday night.

The Regional finals will be on ESPNU... :(

Agreed, even though Princeton and Clarkson are also in the ECAC, I see no benefit for Brown if they win the championship. In basketball, the Ivy League has a tough time claiming they are one of the top 20 best basketball conferences, so any wins in the tournament can really help us look better. In hockey, there are at large teams from the ECAC every year, and any wins by our rivals doesn't show that we are underrated, because the ECAC is expected to be decent at hockey.

YaleFootballFan

The ECAC is considered to be the weakest of the four major conferences, partially because of the league's inability to do well in the NCAA Tournament. Case in point: in last year's tournament both ECAC representatives lost early in the tournament, including #1 seed Clarkson.

2003 was the last time the ECAC was in the Frozen Four (Cornell). It has only happened twice in the last 10 years that an ECAC team made it to the Frozen Four (SLU was the other in 2000) and it's been 17 years since an ECAC team won a National title (Harvard '89). Considering how many titles the other 3 conferences have won in that span, that's a pretty long drought.

You can root for whomever you like, but when our league mates do well on the national level, it only benefits the image of the league. Just think of how bad the league would look if our regular season champion and tournament champion both lost in the first round.

Yeah, any win by Clarkson and/or Princeton is a big boost to ECAC perception. In addition to the droughts YFF cited, Colgate in 1990 was the last time an ECAC team even made the Championship Game xsmhx

I like Clarkson's chances to win a game, at least. Princeton, well, NoDak's alright, from what I've heard... xwhistlex

If Princeton's goalie stays hot, they could steal one.

Clarkson beat a good team today. They definitely deserved all the success they are having so far in the tournament. Good win for the ECAC as well. No teams should feel inferior to others come tournament time.

So, how surprising is it that there could be 3 CCHA teams in the F4 this year?

And that the lone WCHA rep could very well be Wisconsin?

While I hope you're wrong, I do know that UND often has fits against Wisconsin on their home ice. This is one concerned Sioux fan.

Well, I don't really have a dog in the fight, so to speak. If I had to predict, I'd put the Sioux as the winners.

It would just seem so strange that Wisconsin would be still standing even after finishing the regular season with a <.500 record. Just think if the NCAA hadn't clarified the rule book xeekx

I really thought this would be the year for Miami, especially after they were able to tie the game in the 3rd like they did. Preston Camper's brother Ben was a Senior at Colgate this year, so that would have been cool too.
