View Full Version : NFC - The Better Conference?

I'm surprised the AFC has been dominant for so long against the NFC. I'm also surprised that the NFC is ahead this year...
-------------------
NFL balance shift and a strangely meaningless game

We could be as little as three days away from the NFL being back to normal.

Sunday, for the first time since 1995, the NFC, home to the NFL's traditional powers like Carolina and New Orleans, could very well be back on top.

The NFC last won the season series against the AFC in 1995 with a 33-27 margin and this year holds a 31-29 lead in the best-of-64. So naturally, four interconference games grace the Week 17 slate, with the AFC needing a sweep to retain the unofficial title and three out of four to force the one-game playoff Feb. 3 somewhere near Phoenix.

WHAT????? Carolina and New Orleans are 'traditional powers'????

The Bears, Cowboys, Redskins and Packers are the 'traditional powers' of the NFC. New Orleans is synonomous with losing and paper bags over fans' heads.

I'm a Panthers fan, and even I'm sitting here shaking my head at Carolina being called a "traditional power" in the NFC. The NFC may have won the head-to-head matchups, but the AFC is hands down the better conference right now. The AFC will win the Super Bowl yet again come February.

I think he was being sarcastic, but in its 11 years, Carolina has three NFC title game appearances, a NFC title and a Super Bowl appearnace. Since the Panthers made their first appearance in the 1996 playoffs, Dallas has gone O-fer in the postseason, while the Redskins have been just twice.

Well, Cleveland and NE are two pretty sure wins for the AFC. Buff-Phil is a toss up, but I think Minn beats Denver. The divisional matchups this year were really unbalanced. I think no divisional matchup will be closer than 11-5.

New England and Indy are clearly the two best teams in the NFL, and both are in the AFC, but after them it's just a mish mash of average to bad teams. The AFC has some real dogs in it - the Jets, the Dolphins, the Bengals, the Ravens, the AFC West not including San Diego. The AFC used to be better top to bottom but it's only better than the NFC now at the very top. The conferences are closer now than they've been since the AFC overcame close to 20 years of NFC dominance back in the late 90's.
