COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- While their schools are making millions of dollars off their appearance in the Bowl Championship Series title game, each of the players from Ohio State and LSU will at least walk away with one of the hottest gifts this holiday season.

The Buckeyes and Tigers will receive a Nintendo Wii video-game system in addition to several other gifts for participating in the game on Jan. 7 in New Orleans.

---------------------

"It was not easy," said Mark Neville, a spokesman for the Holiday Bowl in San Diego that also is giving the Wii. The Alamo Bowl in San Antonio is the other bowl with the Wii in its gift package.

Do participants in the less glamourous championships (women's volleyball for instance) get such perks for taking part too? I realize FBS college football is essentially outside of the NCAA in many ways, but you hear stuff like this while at the same time hearing about the many players who are ineligible to play (35 Florida St guys, 5 Penn State guys, etc) in their bowls and you just shake your head a little.

ya I never knew players got gift packages..... its good they deserve it for all the money they make for the schools and bowls.

Read the article more - apparently the bowls can give up to $500 worth of "stuff" to each player on each team. Some give game consoles, some give home theater systems, and some just give gifts (one bowl gave guys $400 of Best Buy Gift cards).

I agree, good for them to get something while the schools make something - god knows a free college education, per diem, a vacation, and for some a multi-million dollar pro career just ain't what it used to be. xlolx

I guess if they're playing in "meaningless" bowl games, might as well give them something to take home with them.
