Wow...the NFL actually did this?

NFL arranges simulcast of Patriots-Giants on NFL Network, CBS and NBC

National Football League

The NFL has arranged with broadcast television partners CBS and NBC for an unprecedented three-way national simulcast of the NFL Network telecast of Saturday night’s New England Patriots at New York Giants game when the Patriots will try to become the first NFL team to go 16-0 in a regular season, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today.

“We have taken this extraordinary step because it is in the best interest of our fans,” Commissioner Goodell said. “What we have seen for the past year is a very strong consumer demand for NFL Network. We appreciate CBS and NBC delivering the NFL Network telecast on Saturday night to the broad audience that deserves to see this potentially historic game. Our commitment to the NFL Network is stronger than ever.”

CBS and NBC will carry the NFL Network feed of the game with Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth in the broadcast booth. The game also will be televised by WCVB-ABC (Channel 5) in Boston, WMUR-ABC in Manchester, New Hampshire (Channel 9) and WWOR (Channel 9) in New York. The telecast begins at 8 p.m. ET with kickoff set at 8:15 p.m. ET.

Nationally-televised...

It mentioned some of the cities because ABC will also have it in Boston, New Hampshire and New York due to NFL rules (I'm assuming ABC is the home of cable games in those cities that need to be picked up locally due to the NFL broadcasting rules)...

wow. this is surprising, I thought the NFL would stick with it and let the blame fall on the cable companies....this weakens the NFL's stance with the cable companies, but should leave the fans on the NFLs side.

WWOR is actually a former UPN station now part of the MY network, its sister station is Fox 5.

The reason these channels got the rights I believe is because they also own the rights to the pre season games for the two teams except WMUR which is a sister station of WCVB, both owned by the same company.

When you get the rights to the preseason games, you typically also get the right for first refusal for any cable games of the team as the NFL makes all games televised on broadcast stations locally (barring blackout due to attendance).

In Houston, KTRK-TV (ABC) has the rights and actually turned down a Texans game this year or in the past due to their ABC broadcast schedule of that night. In New Orleans, it is the NBC affiliate that has the Saints rights, so they got to take advantage of a few of these nationally-televised dates on ESPN.

Well, I'm glad the game is nationally televised. There was a huge uproar here in R.I. because originally to see it in the Providence area you would have to have the NFL Network. Since most households up here don't have that station people got together and actually got their Congressional leaders involved. So Reps. Kennedy & Langevin along with Senators Read and Whitehouse sent letters of recommendation to the NFL to have the game broadcasted in Providence. It looks like they weren't the only politicians to get involved in this.

actually John Kerry was very vocal about it and sent several letters to the NFL and the Cable Companies

This may be the first successful thing in awhile that the politicians have done with sports since they've obviously dropped the ball on the steroids issue and any involvement with fixing up FBS football has fallen short...

What's going to be funny is Saturday night, we're going to a local sports bar to watch the game after my daughter's wedding reception...

Now, my family is coming from Massachusetts with all their Patriot gear...and the grooms family is coming from New Jersey with their Giants gear...

So, we'll spend the afternoon celebrating the wedding...and the evening arguing each nuance of the game...

I feel sorry fro those smucks from Jersey...coming all this way for a smack down!!! :p :p :p :p

You going to send some of us the money to move??? Between the townhouse I live in and Time Warner (worst cable company on earth), I'm lucky they haven't taken off ESPN. Took off ESPN Classic and replaced it with VH1 classic. I hate these people!!! We get FSN, but no Orioles, no SoCon games, only the Hurricanes, lucky we get ACC games.

Have any of those people that were up in arms about this heard of sports bars? Or are they just generally opposed to leaving the house? xconfusedx

DVR and Sirius is a great thing. Pause the game until the radio catches up (10-15 sec) and put Gumble on Mute.

Dude, I'm about to make you feel better. COX New England took away ESPN Classic and replaced it with {get this} The Food Network. Now THAT sucks. At least with VH1 Classic you can catch a few good videos from the 80's; when VH1 first came out. The only time the Food Network is worth watching is when Rachel Ray is on; which isn't very often.

I would think there are more homes in America that can switch to Sat from cable than there are homes that can't (apt, townhouses, rentals, etc...)

I know a bunch of homes in Fargo swithced over to Dish Network to get the Big10 network so they could watch the NDSU-Minn game this fall.

Overall there hasn't been the uproar the NFL was hoping for from people that can't see the games. I think the cable compaines have the upper-hand here and the NFL will cave...xrolleyesx

:D, The Giants have nothing to gain in this game, so I don't see the starters playing long. Hopefully that means NDSU's Craig Dahl will get a little more PT...

Even though I'm a huge football fan and the possibility of an NFL team going undefeated for only the 2nd time in modern history is big news, I could care less.
The Patriots are the most over-hyped team I've ever seen. Yes. Most of it is deserved. Both good and bad.(people seem to have forgotten the bad)
This story is just the latest in the saga.

I was reading that the Giants plan on keeping in all of their starters during the game. I'm sure that decision will change if they are either winning or losing by a lot. All I know is that I SURE HOPE the Patriots break all their records and come out on top. I will be wearing my Jersey and my Patriots Santa hat. hehe.

WMUR, WWOR and WCVB the three channels that own rights to broadcast cable games (ESPN and NFLN) in their local markets are now complaining to the NFL that its a violation of their contracts to allow CBS and NBC to broadcast the games.

NBC and CBS says they will not black out the game in the markets of those three stations.

Even better than the first "Super Bowl" in 1967 (They called it the AFL-NFL World Championship Game back then) - sounds like we will get three independent feeds, NFL Network, NBC and CBS.

its the NFLN cameras and on air people, NFLN, CBS and NBC will all show the exact same thing... though each network will likely do its own pregame, halftime and postgame shows.

Yep - if memory serves me correctly, AFL/NBC had Jack Christiansen and Kyle Rote; NFL/CBS had Jack Whitaker and Frank Gifford. Curt Gowdy, for some reason, did not do the game for NBC, even though he did the World Series and Rose Bowl for the network at that time.
