Liberty has 9 guys committed for the fall, plus a CC pickup and a transfer from a major FBS program. Chances are we will have a pretty nice class by the time signing day rolls around

Ryan Kessman has asked for his release from BYU and recieved it. He is visiting Montana this weekend. He will be a redshirt freshman in 2008. I think we have a good chance to get him.

Word is that we will sign quite a few, along with a homesick monster transfer outta LSU. :D

When any one of your transfers actually pans out, then I'll be worried. The only recent transfer I've been impressed with is the fella who plays DL for App State. Other than that, just because he played ball at a big school doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

New Hampshire picked up a nice commit from NJ running back Kenny Howard.

The 2 star RB reported offers from Akron, Marshall, Cinncinati, and NC State.

I don't think that had been posted yet. Sorry if it has.

For what it's worth. FU has more than the 11 commits that have been reported. Just waiting for them to become public. Still waiting on 2 or 3 guys to make decisions, but we have 15 by my count as of right now (so 4 haven't been made public yet).

Ingle Martin was an impact transfer. Joe Flacco was an impact transfer. Justin Rascati was an impact transfer. For a program that has been bringing transfers in by the bus load, none of them are that impressive.

Four More To Join Furman
By Phil Kornblut

The Furman football program has added four more commitments including WR Matthew Gordon (6-1 195) of Birmingham, AL who was first team 5A all state in Alabama. Also committing to the Paladins are OL Matt Blades of Rockingham, NC, Shrine Bowl OL Daniel Spisak (6-2 249) of Charlotte, and WR Daniel McKayhan of Atlanta.

Some of these names are the guys Furman has been waiting on to commit. Matthew Gordon will actually play safety at Furman. Gordon is a very big catch. He was offered by Miss St., Duke, and Samford. Also was getting late interest from Auburn. Gordan and McGrath gives Furman great future size at the safety positions.

Maybe some of our friends from APP or Western can fill us in on the Richmond Senior program, but I hear it's a solid program Richmond Senior Matt Blades 6-5 270 chose Furman over Air Force.

3 more FU commits to add to the list

S - Matthew Gordon (AL)
OL - Matt Blades (NC)
WR - Daniel McKayhan (GA)

That gives FU 15 commits:

RB - Tersoo Uhaa - 5'8", 194 lbs, 4.59 sec Riverside Military Acad. (GA)
RB - Walt Lenard - 6'0", 201 lbs Landmark Christian HS (GA)
WR - Daniel McFadden - 6'2", 178 lbs Dayton Beach Mainland (FL)
WR - Daniel McKayhan - 5'11", 165 lbs, 4.5 sec ML King HS (GA)
TE - Phillip Silverstein - 6'5.5", 230 lbs, 4.66 sec TL Hanna HS (SC)
OL - Matt Blades - 6'6", 270 lbs, 5.1 sec Richmond County (NC)
OL - Daniel Spisak - 6'2", 250 lbs Vance HS (NC)
OL - Parker Karaus - 6'1", 265 lbs, 5.1 sec Edgewater HS (FL)
DT - Bryan Poole - 6'0", 278 lbs Kennesaw Mountain HS (GA)
LB - Chris Wiley - 5'11", 200 lbs Westside HS (SC)
CB - Jordan Griffin - 5'10", 165 lbs, 4.5 Sandy Creek HS (GA)
CB - EJ Vinsang - Montgomery Bell Acad. (TN)
S - Mitch McGrath - 6'3", 195 lbs Lake Brantly HS (FL)
S - Matthew Gordon - 6'1", 189 lbs, 4.49 sec Briarwood Christian HS (AL)
ATH - Ryan Steed - 6'1", 185 lbs Pinewood Prep (SC)

Just waiting on a QB and a couple of DE's now.

Edit: Dang, fuemo must have beaten me by a few seconds. I didn't list Spisak b/c I already had him on the list I'm keeping on the UFFP. Also, when I was searching for Blades, all the searchs had him coming from Richmond County...not Richmond Senior. Which one's right?

From my seat, I haven't been too impressed with your "knowledge".

Lewis got injured in the Coastal Carolina game, missed 2 games because of that injury, played injured for the rest of the season, and still gained 955 yards on only 143 carries which comes to a 6.7 yards per carry average. Yes, he has been verrrry pedestrian. xrolleyesx

Please elaborate, what "illegal" activity did Brandon Jackson undertake to lose his scholarship? I'm all ears on this one..... xrolleyesx

Mike Hamilton also got injured very early in the season and played only very sparingly, mostly 3rd or 4th string.

If you are having this much trouble with the facts, you might need to think about moving your "seat" a little closer to the action. xnodx

Very Solid program. 4A state champs, although I can't tell what years or how many times. Not as dominant since the rise of Independence. NFL receiver Mike Quick and former UNC QB Mike Thomas are from Richmond. My college roommate played for Richmond as well as his brother who went on to start on the Dline w/ Clyde Simmons at WCU.

Your fans were discussing Brandon Jackson here http://www.gsufans.com/index.php?topic=5570.0 seems that he had his scholarship pulled and will be leaving GSU for the draft. Your fans words, not mine. That's your teams business, but I don't assume he's going to be a very effective player if he isn't even on the roster.

Lewis played well, but he usually went as Foster went. Lewis broke 100 yrds only once after his huge game against CCU in the second game of the season. He's been very consistent when coupled with the games best runner. My question is how well he will do next year as the sole guy. Only in GSU's game against Wofford did Lewis' numbers not move in proportion to Foster's. Never did he out rush Foster.

He's certainly a good player, but Im interested to see how he does without the entire defense ignoring him and focusing on the fella next to him.

I guess we'll never know the answer to that as both were seniors in 2007 and exhausted their eligibility.xwhistlex

Baldy is exactly right about the injuries to GSU RB corps in 2007. What he didn't include is that they have a kid named Rozier who was well on his way to being the starting RB and tore his ACL in the second game... we're all assuming he'll get a medical redshirt but I'm not sure if that's happened yet.

Things were so bad for the GSU RB corps that true FR Chris Teal was moved from WR and got 2 or 3 starts at RB... which makes him MOL 4th string. Neither Lewis nor Hamilton played at anything greater than 90% due to injuries after the second game.

As for Jackson, outside of the very debatable offsides play against Elon which cost GSU that game, he was and is a fine player, playing at an all conference level for most of his tenure when healthy. Everything you read on GSUFANS.COM is RUMOR and no official statement has been given by Coach Hatcher, just so we're straight on that.

As for Lewis, he went for over 900 yards both his Jr and SR years- his Jr year with Travis Clark at QB and Foster at WR- and he was a good player, a good student and a good citizen. In his Sr season his game fed off Foster's as you said but that is natural in an option offense with a QB and a sole RB.

Our fans were discussing Jackson losing his scholarship because he violated team rules. Only after he lost his scholarship did he leave the team. That is worlds different than him getting kicked off the team for doing something illegal.

Lewis had 2 100 yard games after the CCU game (Elon and Colorado State), and he also missed 2 games because of injury. Even if a player has a monstrous ypc of 6.7, like Lamar, it's very hard to break 100 yards in a game if you only carry the ball 13, 14, 15, 16 times a game. Do the math, Lewis played in 10 games and only had 143 carries. Oh, and Lewis out rushed Jayson in the Furman game, and had a much better game than Jayson against Elon. It took Jayson 30 carries to get 112 yards, while Lamar had 103 on only 9 carries.

You might be right. Not sure there is a place here for another QB and the Coach might want to have him switch to another position. We have 4 full schollie QB's now, a returning senior starter, a junior, and two sophs.

I've watched him play for two years, he's about 5'11 but he has a pretty good arm. He played in the spread offense so that's a plus going to App. He's a smart kid with a pretty good head on his shoulders. He threw 10 TDs and ran for 7.

Sure. A good time to hand off to a 245 pound running back is 3rd and short. I remember way too many instances (against ASU anyway) where Lamb got cute and ran something like an end around despite the fact that Felton was gashing the defense all day. So I guess it's not a question of him knowing HOW to use him but more of a question of WHY he didn't utilize him more instead of trying to be tricky.

I wish I could find a play-by-play log of the ASU/FU games so I could point out specific examples.

I understand and I believe there's some truth to his statement. Felton was a blessing and a curse. Jerome's first and second years were attached to Ingle Martin. Felton did not redshirt and earned PT on a team loaded with runningbacks and some very good receivers. Second year was all the cute stuff. The APP/FU playoff game proves B&G's point. Friggin ram the ball in the endzone instead of putting Ingle on the edge and slippin to the turf. Felton's junior year was hit and miss, due to injuries. His senior year was actually his best utilized year in my opinion. The Elon game is a prime example.

Furman can always recruit fullbacks, tightends, offensive linemen, and linebackers. I do think we will see the most diversified offense in 2008 since the 2004 Paladins, taking advantage of some excellent recruiting by the coaches. Furman has size and speed at receiver and tightend and the tailback and fullback corps can catch and run pretty darn fast. It will help to to have a kid that has the ability to be a coach on the field Jordan Sorrells. I think Jordan will be one of the most under-rated preseason players in the SoCon.

Calling Felton up the middle on 4th was obvious. Everyone in KBS knew that was coming. Lamb was shellshocked from the Ingle slip. I can't remember what year it was but I'm thinking of a third and short near midfield where Lamb called a WR end around and it ended up losing a good chunk of yards. Maybe it's only in games versus ASU that he outthinks himself like that.

Looks like The Citadel stole a good one from App State..

Buncum chose The Citadel over Appalachian State. In actuality, he was scheduled to make an official visit to App State this past weekend, but after an overwhelming visit to The Citadel, he decided to pass. “Appalachian State already has an established program,” Buncum said. “I wanted to go to another program and help them reach that national prominence, like Appalachian State. I really feel like The Citadel is that place. I feel like their team is going somewhere.”

Jeremy plans to major in a program that is going to prepare him for Law School after receiving his four-year degree from The Citadel; possibly Political Science. At any rate, whatever he decides, you can rest assure that his grades will be in great shape to do so… Buncum made an 1120 on his SAT (math and verbal), and is currently sporting a 3.58 core GPA in the classroom.

I looked, but I haven't heard anything except that he's playing in the "Big 33" game over the summer. The valley awaits with baited breath... xeekx

Yes we shall see what transpires. Last I heard he wanted to base his decision primarily on football, but would like to keep his options open regarding wrestling. I would image doing both would be next to impossible considering he is probably a 189lb ish wrestler and that doesnt fly with playing FCS football, you would probably like him 25lbs heavier. if wrestling is part of his decision you would thing Lehigh will be his choice, plus you have his former teammate Matt McGowen on the roster as well.

I'm wondering now if Dawson Halliday's soft commit to Yale is still valid. With Furman losing out on Archie Barnes to Vandy, Halliday could receive an offer from Furman.

I think Furman is bent on signing a QB, but if it isnt the #1 guy then I'm not worried. We are set at QB for a while between Sorrells and Worley.

So we have 2 3-star players and 4 2-star players, and a lot of other good players who may have gone unnoticed by those who make the ratings. This is shaping up to be a pretty good class. What did our previous recruiting classes look like according to the rivals rating system?

With Paul Johnson at the helm of GaTech your right, the jackets won't be looking for 6-5 QB's that run a 4.67.

Still it should be interesting to see how this kid develops for Furman.

For what it's worth. I don't think Derrick really runs 4.67. If you look at his film he's probably closer to 4.8. He's got good game speed though and is fast enough to run some spread option.

I also don't think he had offers from GT or USC. Derrick was hurt by most teams in this region landing a top QB early. Not a lot of teams around here were looking for QB after Nov. or Dec. I still think he's underrated based on what I've seen, but we'll have to see how he develops.

Most of my friends who are Furman alumni aren't sold on Sorrells. If they're right, then this sounds like the kind of recruit that could come in and compete. Don't assume Sorrells is safe. Remember what happened at ASU with Trey Elder.

B&G… I can't speak for your Furman friends but I'm sold on Jordan Sorrells, the kid has done everything asked of him. He came in as a redshirt freshman and saved several games and at times was far more productive than Gray. This past season, Jordan almost won the starting job with his performance against Clemson. He also led Furman on an impressive drive against Elon when Gray had to get repairs.

I think Jordan has shown the ability to be a leader, read defenses, and run multiple-style offenses. This is just my opinion but if a Furman fan has a problem with Sorrells my guess is it is prejudice against his father. And that's too bad. Jordan is personable and very gifted, and he grew up a Furman fan and all he wants to do is be the quarterback. I think he will do just fine.

Edit: B&G thoughts made we do a little research about Sorrells. Coming into his junior year, which should be his year to start all 12 regular season games. He is already knockin in the Top 20 record books of Furman QB's. Sorrells sits at 124-199 passing, 1737 yards and 6 touchdowns. Billy Napier started his junior year at 38-66 passing, 489 yards and 2 touchdowns. I think Dakota wll have plenty of time to redshirt develope his skills and get bigger. It would be nice to have a 6-5 225 pound plus QB in the future.

Jordan Sorrels has not been given the opportunity to be a fulltime starter yet. His dad is the offensive coordinator of a system JS has now been in three full years. There's a slew of offensive options around him and he came out of a pass happy high school where he was named South Carolina offensive back of the year.

Some people are iffy about Sorrels because he hasn't played a full season. Probaby a justifed concern. However, he has shown tremendous upside and the ability to be an incredibly good clutch player (leading some game winning and important drives). The only knock is that no one has seen him long term. That will change this year.

With Sorrels and then Cody Worley (who many say has the stronger arm) behind him, I doubt Derrick will see the field until he's a R-JR.

The knock on Sorrells is his arm strength. Personally I think arm strength is overrated- look at the success UNI QB Eric Sanders had with marginal throwing power. It's about reading defenses and making plays. Worley on the other hand has a very good arm and will at least provide nominal competition for Sorrells leading up to the season.

FUWolfpacker- Derrick isn't explosive but his ~4.7 is probably legit, considering his other combine results, good vertical, good broad jump, pretty good shuttle. The guy seems like a really good athlete, which almost worries me because how many 6'5 QB's with solid athleticism and throwing ability get so little D-I attention?

An article in myrtle beach online said that Derrick made the decision early in the process that he wanted to go to an FCS with a good academic reputation...which REALLY narrows his choices (I assume he was targeting places like Furman, Wofford, Richmond, etc). Assuming that's true, that's probably the reason he didn't get more attention. I imagine the big schools weren't going to waste their time going after a guy who said he wanted to play at an FCS school. I don't know this for a fact, but I think the fact that his father played at Wofford probably had something to do with him looking to play at that kind of school. I know the fact he didn't have any offers is scaring some people, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. NC State and UNC were both really high on him before they signed Mike Glennon and Brandon Hansen.

I think the fact that Furman had no one obvious QB choice at the top of their board is causing some people to be a little worried. Others have said they feel like this guy is our 6th, 7th, 8th choice. Well, that's not true. We were only turned down by Barnes. I think people believe Derrick was way down our list because there were at least 10 QB's mentioned on our message boards before the coaches finally decided to offer Barnes. In reality, Derrick was probably ranked right around the same area as Halliday and Gilbert. Hopefully Derrick develops well over the next few years. I know from other sources that our coaches had an awful time trying to decide who to finally offer. For what it's worth, I think that says something about the quality of the players on our board. The coaches obviously felt good with a number of QB's.

He also has the luxury of not being rushed. Sorrels will have the ball for two years and then Worley. He'll have plenty of time. I think its a great sign.

Rumor has it that the Hatchman has picked up Martin Ward, a 3 star running back out of Jonesboro. GSU would have 3 RB's in the top 40 in the country. That is unheard of for an FBS school.

Not doubting it. Something isn't sitting right with me though. Why would 3 top 40 running backs go to an FCS school that has already signed several others at the same position to play for a coach who is well known to employ a spread passing attack?

Just doesn't make sense. More power to ya though.

Because we are selling the move to 1A. The coaches are telling our recruits this, so when the moratorium ends, I believe GSU is gone.

But isn't the moratorium over with in the next 5 years (2012)? So even if the selling point is that GSU is moving to FBS, these kids will still play for an FCS school their entire career, correct? xeyebrowx

Sean, that doesn't make sense. The only FBS football these kids will see is when they strap up to play that one game a year.

GSU has the maximum available scholarships in any one year to give out Wednesday at 30.

When you square that figure against the the maximum program limit of 63, it doesn't take a lot of ciphering to figure out that Hatcher is (rightfully so) selling the opportunity to play early and often to these kids.

BTW, I just saw where JW Shippy (3 star LB from SC) just de-committed from Newberry (a 3 star at Newberry????) and committed to GSU, there's a thread on the GSU board about him but I'm too lazy to copy and paste the recruiting site articles about him.

I thought Shippy had grade issues and that's why he fell to Newberry. I saw Gaffney play several times last season. Shippy is a tough kid, he will fit in well at GSU, his only issue might be the grades.

If you don't sign 30 then you'll be faced with a lot of walkons?

More likely transfers than walkons would be my guess, but I have no "inside" knowledge of that, just a hunch.

I just looked at Lehigh's commitment list on rivals.com. According to them, 2* DE from Ohio Cody Connare has committed to Lehigh. http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=67132
LFN hasn't posted on Connare, but i doubt rivals would be wrong. A 2* commit to Lehigh just doesn't happen.

NBC-TV station in Spokane has just talked with Linebacker Alex Shaw this afternoon... he's told them he's signing with the Griz tomorrow.

Shaw is the #53 WLB in the nation, #46 on the Northwest Hot 100, and Washington 4A Player of the Year.

Shaw is one of 26 red chip prospects (#18) named by the Seattle Times. It's interesting to note that most red chip prospects are headed to decent FBS schools.

Yeah, he was waiting for especially WSU. He ended up getting preferred walk on offers from Oregon and WSU. He took the money it looks like. He'll play alot as a Freshman at UM. Wasn't picked up by Scout but a Spokane newspaper article posted at eGriz said he had offers from Montana, Portland State, Eastern Washington, and Idaho State.
