Former Texan, Bills safety and former Mountaineer, Matt Stevens. He was paralyzed earlier this year and this was a column that was done after his first telephone interview...
-----------------
At the time of the accident, he had begun to pursue that dream by helping coach the football team at his alma mater, Appalachian State.

All of a sudden, a life that had been defined by big dreams is measured second by torturous second.

This is a far cry from the kid who grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., bouncing from sport to sport, excelling at pretty much all of them.

He played safety at Appalachian State and was a third-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills in 1996. He made his first NFL start in Game 6 that season, a home contest against Miami.

Man....that sucks......I remember seeing him in the library on campus his last couple of years......he was getting press about being drafted in the spring.....looked like a winner and I thought he was still playing ball....good looking guy, athlete....I remember thinking that guy could pull some serious beaver.....kind of the "chosen one" look....really sucks that he'll be paying the rest of his life for a momentary lack of judgement.....there but for the grace of God.......:(

Kind of Ironic that he is paralyzed and another App St player, Mike Frier for the Seahawks, was also paralyzed in an alcohol-related accident that ended his career....driver was a teammate.....think he is still in litigation with him for ending his career.....xsmhx
