Waiting for my Phils to add an arm or two to the bullpen. I was wondering if Dealer Dave would try and swing a trade with Castellanos, but I suspect there was little interest. When the guy is on fire, wow; but when he goes into his too frequent swoons one feels like tearing their hair out. At least his defense has improved. xeyebrowx

Jorge Polanco traded to Seattle

The return from the Mariners is right-handed starter Anthony DeSclafani (mlbatbat://athlete?player_id=543101), and right-handed reliever Justin Topa (mlbatbat://athlete?player_id=623437), as well as Minor League prospects Gabriel Gonzalez (mlbatbat://athlete?player_id=694224) -- ranked No. 79 in the game by MLB Pipeline (https://www.mlb.com/prospects/top100/gabriel-gonzalez-694224) -- and right-hander Darren Bowen (https://www.milb.com/player/darren-bowen-804539). It’s an unsurprising deal that addresses the Twins’ big league depth needs on the pitching side and bolsters their farm system with a consensus Top 100 prospect.

Oakland for one more year …. For now

Vegas in 2028

The Oakland Athletics (https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/oakland-athletics) may be playing their final season by the Bay in 2024, but their home for the next three years is undecided. The 124-year-old franchise is set for its fourth relocation as the A's will move to Las Vegas in 2028 after the owners approved the move in November (https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-oakland-out-las-vegas-in-owners-unanimous-relocation-vote)

MLB had a serious infusion of young talent last year

if you look at the 2023 top 100 prospects probably 70 of em played in majors last year

Orioles have talent in the farm system with #1 prospect Jackson Holiday who is the son of Matt Holiday

Texas has another good hitter in Langford, played at Florida Gators and can hit. Of course Evan Carter is already up and played in post season last year… he’s good

They're so soft now days because they get coddled like babies. Never heard of players having to sit out after a couple games or DH for a game back 20 years ago because they were used to playing every damn day. Now these fricking managers DH a guy every third day or pull a starter after 80 pitches it's ridiculous.

Yea but they play hard too, I never saw players dive for balls 50 years ago like they do now on every play

As for pitchers, well the average fastball just keeps going up. 95 is about average now. You have to be around 97/98 to have an elite fastball today. The human arm just not designed for it. So many pitchers out with a variety of aliments including forearm strains and elbow problems … surgery is almost a given now

BS there's always been guys diving for balls. Problem is most of these guys rely on their athleticism too much now days. Rather then studying your opponents and putting yourself in better fielding position prior to a pitch they play the same spot for everyone and rely on their speed and athleticism to get there. I'd rather a guy make the routine look easier and play everyday than have a guy make some miraculous catch only to hurt himself and miss 20 games.

That's because everyone just wants to throw hard now days and they don't know how to pitch. Plenty of guys threw 97/98 back in the day but they threw other pitches too, didn't just rely on fastballs.

They have to throw hard if they want to get to the majors so of course they want to, they don’t have a choice. There are still pitchers that know how to pitch, they have to because they wouldn’t get anybody out even throwing at 97

You have middle inning relief pitchers hitting 99 on the gun now, sure there were hard throwers back in the day but right now there’s just more of them. The game has changed.

If Tom Seaver was playing today he would be near 100 as well as Gibson, but Seaver was around 96 97 in his hey day, Nolan Ryan would probably be about 103 104 today

Agreed. However, I think the arm problems are exacerbated by the fact many of these guys have been over-using their arms and associated joints from high school days. Years ago it was a fastball land curve. That's it. Now you have 15-18 year olds throwing all sorts of junk as well as looking to "light up the gun". Stands to reason they are getting operated on in the their early 20's. Seems really sadistic...but, then, it's "all about the Benjamins"....

I've seen all of the current MLB play in person, most when they came to play the Twins, but eight on the road. Can I count Sacramento as a new team to my total if I see them in the next three years, and then count Vegas as another when they move there?

What a bunch of crap. The games were almost always 2-2:30 in duration for 9 innings up until the last couple decades. What has changed to alter the physical well-being of the pitchers' arms is the amount off time twisting and torquing the elbow and shoulder starting in the early teens and playing all the time the same sport. Muscles need a break from the all the stress that is applied to them. Dan Plesac stressed that a few days ago on MLB. Moreover, he noted that teams have moved away from having pitchers do 'long toss' in the outfield. Parents are responsible for some of this by pushing their budding superstars into playing all year, going to camps, travel squads and learning all these junk pitches while the body is still growing. They see the potential for millions in Little Johnnie's repertoire of pitches. Don't get me started...It's all about the Benjamins.

I totally agree. It has nothing to do with a pitch clock, however there are a few major league pitchers that are raising questions about it.

back in the 70s growing up the general world on the street was don’t throw a curveball because it will mess up your arm

I was trying to think of some major league pitchers who have never had a arm surgery and the one guy that popped up first in my head was Aaron Nola…

I'm definitely in favor of the Negro League stats being legitimized as MLB. As far as career batting average though, shouldn't there be some kind of sensible line drawn when it comes to minimum career plate appearances?

Ty Cobb had over 13,000 plate appearances while Josh Gibson had 2,500.

Meanwhile... as things stand:

Royals are the surprise team in the MLB, 2nd in ALC next to the Guardians. This article can explain why (https://www.mlb.com/news/royals-2024-breakout). ALC is the strongest division in baseball ATM.
Seattle currently the leader in the ALW.
NLC and ALW the weakest divisions in baseball, if standings are concerned.

This appears to be the biggest contention by fans with the inclusion of the Negro League stats. Unfortunately the Negro League seasons averaged 40 to 60 games. It doesn't diminish what Cobb did, IMO, it brings to light the greatness of some of the players you rarely here of. DiMaggio, Feller, and Ted Williams for example, had mention of how great some of these players were. Now we have stats to look at for a glimpse into these players careers. Former Negro League players won 11 MVP awards after integration, meaning they did have great players.

A lot of people also falsely claim that the stats shouldn't count or be legitimized because the Negro Leagues were inferior competition. Sure, the worst players in the top Negro League wouldn't have made AL or NL rosters. But the worst players on AL and NL rosters wouldn't have been major leaguers either if the leagues were fully integrated.

If the National Association (1870's), American Association (1880's and 1890's) and Federal League (couple seasons during WWI) players and stats are to be counted as MLB, the Negro League should count as well. Pretty sure converted cricket players from the railyards in 1871 have nothing on Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige and Roy Campanella. Not to disrespect those pioneers either, just putting things in perspective. It's not like MLB is counting the hundreds of homers and multi-thousands of hits Gibson had on barnstorming tours. We're talking about legit, documented games at the highest level of Negro League baseball.

“You can’t hit a guy back anymore,” Merrifield said. “That ‘oh if I hit this guy, my guy’s gonna get hit.’ That’s not in the game anymore...the teams are bringing pitchers up that don’t know where [their pitches are] going. They throw 100 miles an hour, and they’re like, ‘All right, we’ll see if you can get these guys out.’”
Merrifield said he would make sure this is addressed to the rules committee to address safety concerns.
“It is driving me nuts and I hate where the game is at right now with that, and I’m on the rules committee. We got a call tomorrow. And it’s gonna be a long conversation on what they gotta do to make pitchers think. I just took 95 off the back of the head. I’m very lucky I got hit in a good spot.”

Ron Washington, who was Braves third base coach for several years and loved by the players, just dropped a truth bomb.... I love it

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times this week, Washington claimed the franchise “forgot” to acquire big-league talent for the 2024 season.
“We’re going to get some baseball players who may not be superstars, but they know how to play,” Washington told the LA Times (https://www.latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2024-09-25/ron-washington-believes-teach-young-angels-how-to-win). “We forgot to bring real baseball players into the organization. Nothing against those guys here, but they’re not big-league baseball players, and they certainly can’t help us win a championship.”

Well, the Phillies sort of limped home in finishing up the regular season. I think getting the first round bye will be very beneficial in helping them heal up and recharge. Suarez has become the latest 'concern' as he has not been able to recover from the back injury that took him out of the lineup in late June, and since 'returning' has not been the same. Hopefully, they can figure it out, but for now it appears they will be left with Wheeler, Sanchez and Nola as the 'solid three'. Maybe Turnbull returns from his ailments, but I would be surprised the could go more than 4 or 5 innings.

Question…Did Nimmo lollygag his way down the first base line allowing the Braves to complete a double play that cemented their win? Looked like it to me.

good question, the Braves are just lucky to be in the playoffs with so many key players being injured this year

Acuna
Strider
Riley

all out, and Harris and Albies both missed several months

and now Chris Sale suddenly can't pitch due to back problems and was left off the playoff roster

Damn shame for Wheeler. The guy is a stud. The Phils' bats might as well be used for studs. Sanchez better have is 'A' game tomorrow and the rest of the bats better wake up.

Dodgers. The Padres have better pitching and just as good an offense.

The Mets were 11 games under .500 in May. Even the most optimistic Mets fans didn't take them seriously until Sept.

Congrats to the Mutts. They deserved it. Phillies wasted an heroic effort by Suarez, who hardly had any control early on, yet fought back leaving the game with no runs allowed. Bohm, I really think needs to see a sports psychologist. You can see by the body language that he lets every little thing bother him and his head is not clear, also showing up in his fielding. Other than Harper and Castellanos, the Phils bats were anemic. Would love to see them make a run a Soto. Fixes still needed in left and center and more 'bull' pen improvement, though during the regular season they were fairly effective. Esteves appears to be a mistake. Yes, he can bring 100, but the pitches are all straight. Without a good breaking pitch or two of offset, good hitters will rip. As a life long Phillies Phan, I have become accustomed to being let down. Like the old Iggles fan who left burial requests with his will, please have six Phillies carry my coffin, so I can be 'let down' one last time....

Sorry to see "my" Tigers lose to Cleveland. I lived in Detroit from 1974-77, and enjoyed going to old Tiger Stadium, nee Briggs Stadium. Opening Day three years in a row with center field upper deck bleacher seats (real wooden bleacher seats!) for $1.50! Still have my old blue Tigers cap with the 'Olde English' "D". Always next year....

Absolutely!! Guy drives me up the wall. You could see his hitting was affecting his head in the field. Talking to himself in the dugout. A real whiner. I recognize his physical ability, but having now faced some adversity, we get to see how 'strong' he really is. If I were in the Phils' front office I'd have him getting some attention with a sports psychologist.
