The Lambert Trophy was awarded beginning in 1936 to the top football team in the East, complete with an awards banquet for each division.
It disappeared after 2020. What happened to it?

Much like analog TV, it seems to have quietly died after something better came along. With football, I'm talking about major football conferences with eastern members.

More like something worse came along but some people took it anyway.

The ECAC has been dysfunctional for years. I emailed them about it. No response.

So who would have gotten the Lambert Cup this season?
Nova?

This doesn't say why it isn't awarded anymore.

The Lambert was last awarded by the Metropolitan New York Football Writers, owned and operated by American Football Networks, Inc.
So who would have gotten the Lambert Cup this season?
Nova?I'd hope it would be Albany, but who knows?

It went the way of the Widmer Cup, its eastern college basketball equivalent.

I’m afraid it’s gone the route of the NIT. It just shows how college football has become so decoupled from New York City influence and media.

Widmer Cup....great call, had almost forgotten about that as well.
The Lambert Trophy was a big deal probably just into the 90s...when Penn St left and then other leagues formed and it started to lose its luster.
Paterno was livid when Dartmouth won the LT in 1970....challenged the then Indians to a game.

He would have won.
I went and compared the rosters at some point. If I'm recalling correctly, Penn State had a Heisman Winner and something like 19 eventual NFL draft picks on that roster.
Dartmouth.... did not.

Jack Ham and Franco Harris were on the 1970 PSU team, along with Lydell Mitchell (just a sample).
Not surprised the Lambert went away, but it is weird they just stopped and made no announcement. Maybe they wanted to see if anyone noticed.

Thank you.
And yeah-they had some Canton Hall of Famers as well.
Again, Dartmouth... did not.

Still, the best Dartmouth team I ever saw and probably the best defensive team in Ivy League history.
Would have loved to see the Brian Dowling/Calvin Hill Yale offense of 1967/68 against that D.

I'm sure the game would have been interesting. And that's why games are played.
But it's hard to make any objective case that 1970 Dartmouth would have beaten 1970 Penn State looking at personnel.

And the Lambert Cup?
…despite losing 36-13 to Lehigh, who was in its last losing season of an9 year losing streak! Engineers got rolling with that big win and won the Lambert in 1973 and 1975.

Annapolis - Navy plebes took it from West Point following Army winning the trophy the last year it was awarded while they were trying unsuccessfully to kidnap the mule.

But where is Lambert Cup? That goes to the 'mid-sized' school in the East voted #1 by the 'committee'..

Somebody needs to bring back some kind of cup for FCS teams east of the Mississippi because it is readily apparent that an FCS Natty is beyond reach for the foreseeable future. xnodx

Massey predicts Penn St would have beaten Dartmouth 27-14 in 1970.
