I'm looking at the standings and trying to figure out and determine eligible teams based solely on conference affiliation. I know that the Ivy League doesn't play in the Division I-AA playoffs (or at least I don't remember them playing in them). And I know that the Big South, MAAC and Independents lack the necessary 6 conference teams for the automatic playoff berth.
But what teams are eligible, from which conferences, for the NCAA Playoffs?
According to my calculations, there are presently 71 Division I-AA teams with a record of 1-1 or better. As the year progresses, the number of "considered" teams will obviously drop as fewer and fewer teams reach the "magical" 8-3 mark usually deemed necessary for at-large consideration.
In the Atlantic-Ten, I've got:
UMass
R.I.
N. Hampshire
Hofstra
Maine
Towson
Delaware
William & Mary
James Madison
as being 1-1 or better
In the Big Sky, I've got listed:
Montana State
Montana
Idaho State
Northern Arizona
Portland State
Weber State
as being 1-1 or better
In the Gateway:
S. Illinois
W. Kentucky
N. Iowa
Youngstown State
Illinois State
Missouri State
W. Illinois
as being 1-1 or better
In the Great West:
N. Dakota State
S. Dakota State (both are 2-0!)
Northern Colorado
Cal Poly
as being 1-1 or better
In the MEAC:
Delaware State
Hampton
N. Carolina A&T
Bethune-Cookman (2-0)
South Carolina State
Howard
as being 1-1 or better
In the Northeast:
Wagner
Stony Brook
Central Conn.
Monmouth (N.J.)
as being 1-1 or better
In the Ohio Valley:
E. Illinois
Samford
Tenn. Martin
Tenn. State
Tenn. Tech
as being 1-1 or better
In the Patriot:
Holy Cross
Georgetown
Lafayette
Colgate
Lehigh
as being 1-1 or better
In the Pioneer:
San Diego
Dayton
Valpo.
Morehead State
Austin Peay
Davidson
as being 1-1 or better
In the Southern:
Western Carolina (2-0!)
UT-Chattanooga
Wofford
Georgia Southern
App. State
Elon Univ.
The Citadel
Furman
as being 1-1 or better
In the Southland:
Texas State
McNeese State
SE Louisiana
Stephen F. Austin
Northwestern State
Sam Houston State
as being 1-1 or better
In the SWAC (do they have an auto-bid??):
Miss. Valley State
Alabama State
Grambling
Prairie View
as being 1-1 or better
Which conferences receive an auto-bid to the playoffs? Are their 8 total conferences, with 8 at-large bids?
