If Miguel Tejada is overpaid with his numbers as a shortstop, how's THIS for ridiculous?
Aaron Rowand just signed with the Giants for 5 years, $60 mil. That's $12 mil per year, for an outfielder who last year was 27/89/6/.309/.374 in that bandbox known as Phillie Stadium. Sorry, but I'd take Tejada and his numbers over these ANY DAY. You'd better be gettin' more than this from an outfielder making $12 mil. xcoolx xcoolx xcoolx xcoolx

The Giants will still suck, and finish last in the NL West

that deal reminds me of the money Gonzo was stealing from the DBacks for the last two years of his contract. And Matt Williams too. It's a fact of life in the MLB that by the time you actually GET paid, you can't earn it. xlolx

Phillies offered Rowand 3 year contract....Since they lost Bourne in the trade for Lidge, I assume they're planning on having the 'Flyin' Hawaiian' move over to center, and have Werth go full time in right...unless they have some other plans....

I'm still bitter about that. If Lidge pulls an Adam Eaton, I'm going to hunt the guy down myself.
I'd like Rowand to stay, but if the Giants were willing to overpay for him, I don't blame him for taking that contract instead.

And yet there's an entire thread dedicated to Orioles fans who blame Tejada for taking a contract that was offered to him in which they think HE is overpaid. xcoolx xcoolx xcoolx

Tejada is just so brittle. He has used steroids for so long that his body is breaking down fast

I'm gonna miss Rowand, but I don't think he's worth a five year risk. His playing style lends itself to injury.
I love that he will run into a wall to make a catch, but the wall will put him on the DL way to often. I also don't think he will be that effective in 5 years.

I agree a 5 year contract was too much and the Giants will regret it eventually. But Rowand definitely had the style of play that Phillies phans love. Big risk on Lidge in giving up Bourn..we can only hope it works out.

The Phillies outfield is very thin now. I'm not sure Victorino or Werth can play a full season. It sure would have been nice to have a fourth outfielder to platoon with them.
They may sign one yet, I hope one is on the wish list. Doesn't have to be an all-star, just a reliable guy who can fill in now and then.

They still have 2 huge question marks at Center Field and the hot corner. Arguably the 2 most important defensive positions. too. xsmhx

I know.
It's frustrating. The team is close to being a championship contender, but I doubt management will spend the extra money needed to push the team over the hump.
They will be an exciting, dangerous team with gaping holes.

That's the Pat Gillick/Dave Montgomery philosophy of building a team: "subtraction by subtraction."xcoffeex xrolleyesx xsmhx
First, they accomplish d*ck at the winter meetings, and now this.

Well, Victorino will be fine enough defensively in center, and Werth has a good arm and can play right (heck, if we could have the statue known as Bobby Abreu out in right all those years anything would be an upgrade defensively). From a defensive standpoint we'll be okay. But losing Rowand means we are weaker offensively in the lineup, it means we are thinner in the outfield now (geez, who is the 4th outfielder???), and it means we are committed (stuck) with Pat Burrell.
Also, Iguchi just signed with the Padres yesterday, so that means our longshot attempt to fill 3rd base is also kaput now as well.
Typical Phillies, make a risky and probably unwise move to find relief with Lidge, and then pretty much watch your free agents move elsewhere. I agree that what Rowand got from the Giants was probably a bit much for a player of his talent, but when the Phillies sit here and do nothing, and knowing they have nothing in the farm system, it just doesn't look good.

Actually Victorino could be a better centerfielder. He's much faster and a better arm. While doesn't have as much hitting power, he's a gap hitter with great speed. Werth did a good job last year. Now gets a chance to be everyday player. The question will be depth. Iguchi was never going to be 3B..even he did not want to play there. Too old to make the transition now. Not sure if there's a diamond awaiting in the minors, but there could be some moves yet to be made.
