Not sure where the source is, but only the Bozeman Cats and the Griz sold out their stadiums consistently for their home games this season.
Jackson State still leads the FCS in total attendance despite only filling 82%+ of their stadium, even with Prime gone to the FBS. Tarleton carries into the FCS their top-10 attendance ranking, checking in at #4 or #5.

We had a little discussion about this on the FU Board when one of our good SoCon friends came over to disparage the 'support' that Furman Fans had provided for their Team at the Wofford game in terms of attendance.
So, FUBeAR started thinking....
Sure, there are 9 million variables that go into attendance, but one thing that would be interesting and, perhaps, enlightening is to assess the level of 'home attendance support' students and alumni, theoretically, provide. In other words...let's look at Attendance as a function of Enrollment...again...9 million other variables drive attendance (we all KNOW that), but one would have to acknowledge that it's at least intuitive that the more students, more alumni, more living alumni that a school has (all 9 million other things being equal-ish), that they at least have a higher 'opportunity' for higher attendance.
So...anyway ... in a very LONG chart below, FUBeAR is showing Attendance/Enrollment ratios - he called that number a "Support Ratio" and has ranked them by school AND by Conference (shown below the list of schools - average rank and average 'support ratio' for each conference).
Oh yeah - FUBeAR used College Navigator's "Student Population" for the enrollment numbers. Unless FUBeAR botched up copying/pasting...if you don't like the enrollment number for your school, take it up with the good people at that site.
Interested in y'all's thoughts or feel free to ignore....it's a lotta numbers!

Two thoughts, and yes, the enrollment numbers are inflated:
1. The top 10 are mostly rural schools, nine of the bottom 10 are in cities.
2. The larger bias is in proximity: 57 percent of Alabama State students come from Alabama and likely most its alumni. Three percent of Georgetown students come from DC and while roughly 20 percent of alumni are within an hour of the campus, it's not easily accessible and not a Saturday destination. How many Cornell alumni are driving 4-6 hours from NYC to watch a game?

What a load of malarkey. Leave it to fubear to figure out a way to show FU in the top three in the entire FCS, it took a lot of twisting and turns to make it work out, but leave it to fubear, he'll get it done....
33195

What a load of malarkey. Leave it to fubear to figure out a way to show FU in the top three in the entire FCS, it took a lot of twisting and turns to make it work out, but leave it to fubear, he'll get it done....

Right, Ratio of support??? I guess thats ok for teams that can't fill their stadiums but for the teams that overly sold out every game it means nothing. If Montana & Montana State had 35K capacity stadiums we'd still sell out.

Enrollment figures appear to include graduate students, which is a major portion at some schools and has no effect at others, and who may have been undergrad at other places with no athletic loyalty to the grad school. They probably aren't paying athletics fees and getting game tickets either.

Population of Greenville and Spartanburg counties are nearly the population of the entire state of Montana... Has enrollment declined significantly? Why did they expand the stadium from 13,200 to 16k in 1985? The population of the surrounding area has blown up, yet in a year with a pretty good team, they would have only have only filled the PRE-expansion stadium 80%. Seems like Furman's "ratio of support" is tanking.......

Was awesome back in the day going to a game at PG&E Park. Attendance since then has literally been High schoolish since the boot from downtown.
They need to find a way to get back to that venue.
Too busy for that venues pro soccer schedule?

Downtown is obviously more conducive for travel, and attracting any potential casual Vikings fans to the game. However, I believe Portland State originally lost use of Providence (formerly PG&E) Park, because of the soccer schedule. Between September and November, Providence Park held soccer matches on the following Saturdays:
9/09 (Timbers)
9/16 (Thorns)
9/23 (Timbers)
9/30 (Thorns)
10/07 (Thorns)
10/21 (Timbers)
11/05 (Thorns)
That leaves only 5 open Saturdays on the calendar between September and November 2023 (prior to the FCS playoffs), for Portland State to schedule games. Aside from scheduling issues, I assume nodak651 is correct, that Providence doesn't want the chance of their field being torn up by football teams.

Wow FUBeAR this is awesome! I have to wonder, is FCS analysis your full time job? I also notice the times of your posts (this one at 0230). I think you are spot on. Like I tell the asshole SEC fans, the numbers in the SoCon are about 10%: 10% of the school size and stadium capacity. Anyway, your analysis proves once again that football just matters more in the South.

Enrollment figures appear to include graduate students, which is a major portion at some schools and has no effect at others, and who may have been undergrad at other places with no athletic loyalty to the grad school. They probably aren't paying athletics fees and getting game tickets either.
Astute observation. My school (Mercer) has almost 50% grad students yet still came in over 1.00. FUBeAR's Furman has few grad students.

You are really missing FUBeAR's point. Who are Cats/Griz competing for fans with? Clemson is within an hour of Greenville/Spartanburg, and Columbia within 2. Yet Furman is a very small school with a good FCS history who is holding their own. Maybe they should play in a 12K stadium so it looks full? You really can't compare the sparse and spread out Big Sky with eastern conferences.
