I think this is the first year in awhile where AGS misses the At-Larges. I don't think NCCU or Sac St will make it this year and with the drubbing that Chatty had, I feel like AGS could miss on 3 ALs.

I think historical precedent is going to keep them out this year and Jay Walker is going to go on a racial discrimination tirade.

I can see the argument - Sac St played each of the 3 Big Sky seeds while UC Davis only played one so conference record should be taken with a grain of salt. UC Davis had bad losses to NAU and EWU. That's head-to-head UCD win the day before Selection Sunday is a real big thing to have to overlook though when they have identical 7-4 records.

That is now 2 years in a row when a conference opponent finished lower in the conference standings than Davis and got into the playoffs and Davis being left out.
I think there is definitely biasness against Davis. Maybe it's time to go real D1.
We have the facilities to add, we have a large student population and alumni, and we are already academically beyond most D1 requirements.
The selection committee will only let Davis in if the have a much better record than the older fcs established teams.
Davis would have been left out if there was a 6-5 established team.
Sac should NOT have gotten in over Davis. If you want to say Davis lost to such weaker teams. Than a loss to UC Davis should have dropped them out of the top 25 since using logic here. Davis is a weaker team than NAU and EWU so Sac lost to a weak Davis team. How dies that look!

We got Drake because of regionalization. I really don’t have a problem with the Bison not getting a seed but I really do not understand the MSU 6 seed. They had one good win and they must have given a ton of weight to the loss at SDSU, I really don’t get it but it is what it is. Bison need to prove they can win on the road. These overrated CAA teams will be fit early. That happens virtually every year, they don’t have JMU to lean on.

lucchesicourt
November 19th, 2023, 12:25 PM
Now last year Davis beat a D1 team , and lost 5 games to top 10 teams, and won the rest including a win over Weber ranked, but somehow Montana who did not beat a team with a.500 record got in over David's and finished in 6th place in conference.
Use your logic here did you?

Last year ticked me off way more. I understand Sac getting in over Davis. You can’t just go off of H2H and have to look at the whole picture. It’s definitely more frustrating because it happened a second year in a row though.

lucchesicourt

Would the losses instead of being against EWU and UNA made any difference if they were losses to MSU and Weber and their record was still 7-4 and they beat Sac. I mean a !odd is a loss. That is what was said when we lost 5 games to the top ten opponents. So, is a loss is a loss or are losses determined differently this year.

I'd have to go look but I think the bus trip applies to first round only unless I'm missing what you are saying here.

The committe can't skip out on the rules because once they do their match ups an NCAA rep goes over them to make sure the rules are abided by and if not they go back to fix it.

I’ll go back and listen if I have time, but I thought in Haslam’s interview with Sam Herder he said after the seeds are set the 1st round matchups are set according to regionalization (like you said here). And then the 1st round matchups are bracketed to the seeds also based on regionalization, unless they have to do something like split up a conference that gets 4 or more bids on opposite sides of the bracket.

USD gets Massey Rating (#5 USD, Sac St. #12, UND #10, MSU #4, NDSU #3, Drake #94). How didn't Drake get sent to the region of rejects for Montana to beat up on?

Sac St over UC Davis is criminal.

Davis was 5-3 in the Big Sky. Sac St was 4-4. And, as we know, Davis won the head-to-head.

Even worse when you see NCC in and you are on the sidelines.

Yeah, I'm getting my information from the same guy in an interview we did with him 5 or so years back but they can't think that rule was as prevalent after the first round because my logic is that if it were then the NCAA compliance would have probably made the point to them...but like I say would have to go back and listen to the Wedge again to see as well.

They obviously do some regionalization, Fordham/New Hampshire @ Holy Cross, Weber going to Montana State last year, Youngstown/Duquesne going to Villanova this year. But it does seem that it’s not THE top priority.

NC Central has 3 wins over CAA teams

That is like saying they beat 3 Pioneer League teams lets take a look at the resume: NC AT (95), Campbell (59) an OT win, and Elon (33). The Elon win was the only team with a winning record. The rest: 127, 108, 91, 78, 126 plus a DII win. How does the full schedule count with this being the resume of an at large team. Now they are questioning the MVFC when they let this NCC schedule in. Unbelievable.

I'd have to go look but I think the bus trip applies to first round only unless I'm missing what you are saying here.

The committe can't skip out on the rules because once they do their match ups an NCAA rep goes over them to make sure the rules are abided by and if not they go back to fix it.

Really, how do you explain last year. It looked like the committee just made it up. PS - really soft bracket for Mont again this year.

I don't need to explain it. You can have any opinion you would like to. I'm telling you how they have to do it coming straight from several fellers now that are/were/have been on the selection committee.

But I'm sure you know better.

I couldn't tell what he was talking about but that was my same thought unless he was comparing to SDSU. I didn't go look but wasn't sure the gripe anyway because when you are taking about the top 2 seeds you need to understand how it works and sometimes it's a coin flip for what is seen as easier between the top two.

All I did was listen to the interviews last year. It was clear that they didn't follow the rules you are talking about. I think if you look at my historical posts I have multiple posts that clearly showed how they absolutely broke several rules. Thats it, not an insider. I just do the math and ask questions.

xnodx It's 30 years! But sadly, I don't think Delaware will be making the trip. That was a hellluva game in '93 though! 49-48. I think both teams scored 2 TD's each in the final 2-3 minutes.

FUN FACT: Montana was the #2 in 1993 also! UD was #15. That's when they had only 16 teams, and seeded everyone on merit. Travel was (obviously) not a consideration.

Okay, name the rules and let's go over them. Maybe you are correct, or maybe it is just misunderstood what the rules actually are. That is normally the case. It could be that you are talking about differing philosophies among the group for selecting teams and so forth of which there are many...just like there are here with individual voters. BTW you know I am the one that vets the ballots for our poll and I know how you voted and how similar it is to the way the committee put things together right? Philosophies among groups can vary too so that makes it even more incongruous with people trying to do their best job of determining who they think are the best that should be in.. Last year 3 MVFC, this year 6, are they being unfair to everyone else? No, just the way it works out this year with all that went on around the country.

All of that is completely different than the aforementioned NCAA rules that I was speaking to C Batman about. So if you have broken rules let's see them and I'll send an email and ask why the NCAA rep let them bend or break those rules this time around.

As PC said, the committee duplicated what we did here as a consensus so not sure what the crying is all about. If we compare your ballot to the overall consensus there would be some minimal differences I am sure but for the most part your opinion and the consensus opinion would be fairly reflective especially at the top of the poll which is what matters the most in a tournament.

I'm not being a smart ass when I am asking what NCAA rules were broken if you have them. Not committee section work, NCAA rules.

That happens virtually every year, they don’t have JMU to lean on.Yeah MSU at 6 was a massive head scratcher but the regionalization finally paid off for NDSU getting a decent match up for their pod.

Of the unseeded teams, is Southern Illinois the closest location for Nicholls?
Yeah, the Colonels have a lousy record, but they did go 5-0 in the conference and are the AQ, and it seems like they didn't get any respect at all.
Yeah, I know. They have a chance to prove it on the field.
But, if you say, geography is important in the first round, I'm just wondering about this.

Nicholls doesn't have any teams in the field within 400 miles of them which means a bus trip is out of the equation. If you're going to be getting on a plane anyway, then pairing you with the closest team geographically pretty much goes out the window.

Probably not the closest - I think that would be Mercer but SIU isn't much further and both are over the 400 mile radius for bus travel so it didn't make a big difference anyway from a policy perspective on how they're supposed to build the bracket. Here's how the field looked in terms of seeded/unseeded teams (can't put good labels on it but you can see which one is Nicholls and that there isn't much around them for other playoff teams).

Thanks! I did think Georgia or Tennessee might be just a bit closer. ;-)
It's going to take them Cajuns a while to row the pirogues up the river so it is a good thing the game isn't until Saturday -- and no snow in the forecast!

I don't think it would matter much anyway. Back in the good ol' days when McNeese made the playoffs and had to travel, you can best bet we were sent off to UNI, Delaware, Montana, or Idaho.
I think before next year's selection committee meets, I'm going to send them an atlas.

Thanks man, I was in a hurry and messed a couple things up but my biggest mistake this year was copying last years sheets, erasing the team names and reusing the sheets without erasing the numbers....dumb as **** cuz I keep forgetting to correct the ties from the previous year.

I'll go get that repaired, appreciate the word up.

Assuming the teams were chosen fairly, the committee didn't have any option other than the match-ups we see.
Sac, Nicholls, and Drake don't have bus trips. NDSU-UND played so are also out of bus range with any other team. SIU played AP so has no bus trips.

YSU- Duquesne, Delaware-Lafayette, and NCC-Richmond are no question required bus trips. 6 down.
Austin Peay already played Gardner-Webb and SIU, so their only remaining bus trip is Chat. 8 down.
Only remaining bus trip is Mercer-GW. 10 down.
For the 3 remaining pairs, UND-SIU didn't play in the regular season but that match-up increases distance for everyone else, plus is in conference. SIU-Nicholls makes sense. 12 down.
UND-Drake played, so Drake has to go to NDSU. That leaves Sac St to UND.

Gripe about the match-ups, but this really is the optimal travel schedule.
