I can't hear about Tebow being the first sophomore to win the FBS's VERSION of the PAYTON award anymore this week, much less all of the squabbling over the BCS meltdown... I just sent ESPN an idea for a story we'd all be more interested in:
IMPORTANT!!! IMPORTANT!!!
To whom it may concern:
Tickets to this weekend's FCS(I-AA) national championship game in
Chattanooga, TN between Appalachian State Mountaineers (pronounced
'APP-uh-LATCH-un') and the Fightin' Blue Hens of the Univ. of Delaware
have been consistently going for $125-$175/ticket all day on ebay. Even
in groups of 7, 5, 3. Virtually EVERY ticket is going over $150. Even
outside the 25 yd. lines!!!! (note:these tix cost $20 through UT-Chatt.
until the game sold out early Sat.. ASU sold ALL of it's ticket
alotment in 7 hours.
I already have my ticket and am incredibly excited for all the demand
this game is stirring up, but those prices are mind-boggling....
Seriously... a group of 7 tickets went for over $1300 !!!!
In my VERY honest opinion, your network should do a story, on an off-FBS
weekend(like this one), on the incredible increase in demand for a
playoff to determine The NCAA's ONLY SANCTIONED D-I champion on the
field instead of in the database.
BOTH teams have rowdy, monstrous eastern fanbases. It's made to
order, App took down michigan, UD took down Navy (both upper bowl
teams)[correction- the Poinsettia Bowl is not what I consider 'upper,' i just got a bit carried away]. This a way better match up than half of the bowls and the boys
at ESPN oughtta take notice.... In the first round, it WAS the
first-ever UD-DSU matchup, but it was perceived negatively as a racial
story, why not have a positive spin on the National Championship.
You guys might even be able to spin this unprecedented demand for tix to
a match-up of well-supported FCS heavyweights into a public belief in
the failure of the BCS. Make it sound like these fans would rather drop
'down' to I-AA and see a TRUE champion than see a 'faux-champ' crowned
by a computer. Mark May has his 'mythical' FBS playoff bracket set, and
it looks fantastic... Maybe this could be another piece of ammo to push
for an FBS playoff. If your ratings are down because the FCS is
PERCEIVED to be a lower class of football, why not REALLY push the case
for a playoff.
I bet the general public has no idea that people are shelling out an
avg. of $150 a ticket to watch the 'little boys in the FCS, formerly
known as I-AA' play for a TRUE title...
If I can be of ANY help in this matter, PLEASE let me know. I am an AVID
FCS(I-AA) fan and would love to see MY sub-division get some more MUCH
overdue exposure. We play GREAT football in the FCS (see Armanti
Edwards of App State)...
Edwards should, without a doubt, be on next year's Heisman Watch. Maybe
even a FINALIST... Look out Steve McNair, you might just have another
I-AA heisman winner after Tebow goes Pro in 2009...
Simultaneously, you can potentially boost your ratings and push for what
the VAST majority of ALL college football fans want... a D-IA playoff to
determine a REAL champ.
We have our playoffs and we love them and so do our fans... it's time
for the big boys to ante up and BEAT THE BEST TO BE THE BEST... We've
been doing it for over 20 years...

That's a great e-mail. Here are my thoughts. Basically, you have three "types" of football fans [generally speaking, of course].
Homers (ASU and UD) - Those fans are going to watch the game no matter what and (even if they are interested in the BCS) don't care about the BCS/Heisman talk.
Football Lovers - These guys love football, in general. They probably watch any game that's on (even Toledo on Thursday night), just because they love football. They will watch because they want to see a game--they don't care about the BCS/Heisman talk because they can watch it on Sportscenter, or read it on ESPN.com
BCS Lovers, who don't care about anything non-BCS - These guys aren't going to watch regardless. Even if you tell them that Tim Tebow is going to call in. Why should they care? They can watch it on Sportscenter, or ESPN.com. Additionally, even if you are a Tebow lover who wants to hear his interview, most likely you're going to DVR the game, go drink with your buddies, and catch the recorded version Saturday afternoon after your hangover subsides. You're not going to watch the game [live or taped] and ESPN isn't going to get your rating from the DVR.
So, basically, there is NO reason for ESPN to do it...
EXCEPT for the fact that the announcers are too lazy to do their homework and figure out something about the ACTUAL teams to talk about [hence the Sportscenter deal about App playing either UofD or GSU]. Basically, the announcers don't do their homework and they don't have ANYTHING ELSE to say.

A good post, true, but how ridiculous is this statement? If Edwards was on ANY 1-A team, he wouldn't be anywhere close to being on the heisman watch list, let alone a finalist. He is a great athlete on a great team, and he deserves his due recognition. But this is just another "App State is the greatest thing since sliced bread" post. Without those two blocked field goals in the big house, we wouldn't be close to this conversation. DON'T GET ME WRONG, App State is the best team in FCS and Edwards is the best player, but App State fans are going to hurt themselves if they pat themselves on the back any more than they already do.
P.S. Don't turn this into a griz bashing comment, this is only MY opinion.

all opinions welcome rob... You actually caught me on an omission, not as much of a homer claim. I also was going to mention how AE racked up all those #'s while missing 4 games, but I thought that statement had a bit more of a homer 'twang' ....
The truth IS that AE missed 4 games and has 1499 rushing and 1750 passing. He could be the first EVER (that I can find) to rush for 1500 + pass for 2000 or complete his second consecutive season with 1000 rush+ 2000 pass.
If he can get those #'s and another solid season next year I would be kinda surprised if he wasn't receiving some serious recognition. Appfan or not...
Seems pretty impressive to me as a sophomore...

Again... this isn't about APP!!! Nowhere did I mention anything about who was favored or would win on Fri... This was meant to be a pro-FCS post, not a pro-any-single-team. I merely needed an example of a really good FCS player.. and AE is one that is fresh on their minds... You downplayed AE's performance against JMU, which accounted for 3/4 of our offensive pts... You were wrong simple as that.
We know there is a game on Fri... Against a really good team. Gonna be a helluva game. We just needed something else to talk about for a couple of hours...

Fact is, you can stop patronizing UD - you're in a football game Friday night. You just dont realize it yet. I could care less who you beat in August.
That's the only stat you need up there. Everything else is about proportional with that ratio. Actually, we did a lot more stat-wise with the ball while we had it. Anyways, IF (and that's a HUGE "if") you can come close to keeping us off the field for 40 minutes you have a shot at scoring more than us. JMU did a great job but I doubt our coaches will let that happen again. Good Luck. Go Apps!

ASUdrummer, your coaches are not going to let it happen again? The fact is coaches can only do so much, it is up to the players to not let it happen, not the coaches. Sure coaches can design better strategies against an offense, but they cannot make the plays on the field. If the players falter, it will happen again and again, regardless of the coaches and their strategies. It all comes down to EXECUTION by the players, as the coaches can't execute their own strategies. Sometimes too much credit or not enough is given to the coaches. In order for a coach to be successful requires players who execute on the field. A coach with less talent can defeat a more talented team providing his players execute better than the other team and have more heart. Talent alone does not win games, but it sure makes coaching easier when you have it.

To elaborate further 12 of 17 for 126 yds, 0 TD, 0 INT. and 20 carries for 139(6.6 yds/carry) and 3 TDs....
MAN.. I had forgotten how good he was against JMU. Thanks Henny...
How good is this kid when 256 yards of total offense and 3 TD's is considered a bad day?

The "light at the end of the tunnel" posts by the UD fans are hillarioius. APP almost lost to JMU so that means we have a chance LOL xlolx xlolx xlolx . Didn't UD go to like 2 OT's with JMU. To pull out the win with only 19 min of possesion is pretty scary in itself. Imagine what would have happend if App had it for 20 min.... hehe that being said should be a good game.

all opinions welcome rob...
Agreed xpeacex
