WCU held ETSU to 215 total yards while racking up 678 of their own. QB Cole Gonzalez was 25-38 for 363 yards and 5 TDs (0 INT). Western played 4 QBs and racked up 513 passing yards. The stat that kind of blew me away was 35 first downs.

I know this isn't FCS related but I thought a statistic from the Michigan/Penn State today warranted mention. Michigan finished the game running the ball on 32 consecutive plays, beginning with about 6 minutes left in the second quarter.

If we are going to go backwards, WCU’s Desmond Reid on 9/30 had 167 yards on 18 carries and 5 TDs in the first half - he didn’t play a down after halftime. The next week against UTC’s stout defense he had 211 yards on 15 carries and 2 scores. He has been out since then (he went out against Chatt late in the 3rd), but that is 378 yards and 7 TDs in less than 5 quarters of football.

When Montana wins next week they will have 3 wins against top 10 opponents, two of them top 5 and one of them on the road, and will be the #2 seed in the playoffs. The loss against the 4-6 team happened while the team was suffering from Covid and flu outbreaks while playing at 7,000 feet.

Furmans wins according Massey Rating System: 83, 72, 28, 118, 50, 30, 85, 33, 76, 102 - not exactly murders row. The team that you called out in USD's schedule is St. Thomas at (91). Furman had 6 games playing the equivalent or worse (83, 118, 85, 102, 72, 76) with an AVG of 89.3. So, you want a 2 or 3 seed for Furman because they won three games against marginal teams at 28, 30, 33. That looks like a top 15 resume to me.

Haslam isn't allowed to be in the room when Montana is being discussed. As for the rest of the committee, I think they will be intelligent enough to look at the rest of the team's body of work and conclude that the NAU game was an aberration and not indicative of their overall quality and seed-worthiness.

Sounds good.
So, the Committee will also view...
...Chattanooga’s loss to North Alabama,
...Furman’s few coverage lapses on South Carolina’s deep shot TD’s,
...Mercer’s Offense’s 1 ‘off-game’ against Chattanooga, and
...WCU’s 6 turnovers against Mercer...
...through that same “aberration and not indicative of their overall quality” lens.
Fair enough!

that’s junk. Stupid. I am objective. I would say this about Furman, Montana or UGA.
ALL GAMES COUNT. If you can’t win then you suffer the consequences. Sure there are outliers. But THEY COUNT. if Alabama lost to Chattanooga this week would the CFP say “that’s an aberration and Bama still stays top ten”. NO FREAKIN WAY
here. I’m not a fan but I think UGA Will win FBS title. But if UGA loses to Georgia Tech (yes, an aberration for sure) they will not be in the CFP anymore. Case closed. You don’t get a mulligan in college football. UGA would then drop to a New years Six or so. No shot at CFP despite DESTROYING most of the the Top 20 FBS

Sure, all games count, but maybe some count more than others. I'm not arguing that Montana should be ranked ahead of Furman right now, but this is certainly not the same Montana team that lost to NAU six weeks ago.

Holy Cross statistically dominates Army (26 first downs to 11; 395 total yards to 269; 239 rushing yards to 190; and won the time of possession battle)...but two turnovers and an Army blocked punt that went for a TD ultimately did them in.
It's not often a team out-gains Army on the ground at Michie.

why did the offense morph into the Sluka running back exhibition? I just don’t remember him running the ball 37 times much last year

Too much backyard football. Too many designed QB runs. Too many times tuck and running when the first option isn't there.
Sluka and the offense was better under former OC Chris Smith (now with the NY Giants).
By Sluka running 37 times, we played right into Army. Definitely would have had more success spreading them out and slinging the ball around the field. HC's top two receivers (Coker and Shorter) are better than Army's DBs.
It would have opened up running lanes for Sluka (both by design and on broken plays) much more.
Oh well.
This season will forever be a "what could have been" year. Preseason top 5ish ranking. Bringing back a lot of star power. The return of Dobbs. There were legitimate and seemingly realistic Friso murmurings.
I do think that most didn't realize how some of the losses on the defense were going to be. Despite Dobbs returning, holes were not filled on the defensive line and secondary. And, unfortunately, injuries really decimated some key guys that were expected to be difference makers.
I could write many more words, but don't feel like channeling my inner MUHAWKS today.

I never said it doesn't, or shouldn't, count. I said that I don't think the selection committee will punish them as much as some think they should given the rest of their body of work, assuming a win over MSU this weekend. 3 wins against top 10 teams whereas Furman would have 0.

Oh fiddle-drum-sticks. That's just so much voodoo math projective blarney - much like any "Strength of Schedule" calculations.
FUBeAR's PROOF of VMI's superiority to that of the BerylBirds ARE ACTUAL EVENTS that have already happened ... kinda like SDSU's & FURMAN's UNDEFEATED FCS RECORD, as opposed to others, who are NOT UNDEFEATED in FCS and are trying to claim some entitlement to a Top 2 Seed.
The good 800 people in Lewisburg Pennsylvania respectfully disagree

If we are going to go backwards, WCU’s Desmond Reid on 9/30 had 167 yards on 18 carries and 5 TDs in the first half - he didn’t play a down after halftime. The next week against UTC’s stout defense he had 211 yards on 15 carries and 2 scores. He has been out since then (he went out against Chatt late in the 3rd), but that is 378 yards and 7 TDs in less than 5 quarters of football.
And he's still the SoCon rushing leader after week 11 with 857 yards in only 7 games.

Is his injury season ending?

Furman held VMI to 8 total yards in the first half. Freshman QB Carson Jones threw for over 200 yards 15-18 and 4 touchdowns in the first half. Furman called off the dogs in the third quarter and played 85 players. Just about all of VMI’s offense came in the 4th quarter against 3rd and 4th teamers. VMI kicked a fg with under 2 minutes left to avoid the shutout.
