A lot new-ness in the top 25 this week. Furman's highest ranking since 2005, Western Carolina's highest ranking ever, and NDSU's lowest ranking since 2010 breaking a remarkable streak of 175 consecutive AGS Polls where they appeared in the top 8 (started with the final poll of 2010).

Why is Idaho ahead of Montana???
You could ask the same question about why Sac St is ahead of Idaho. Too many other data points on the season for head-to-head to trump them all - Montana has an ugly loss to NAU (which looks even worse after this week) and uninspiring wins against Butler and Ferris St. Idaho has that great win against Sac St and a dominating FBS win over Nevada (yeah Nevada is bad but only USC has beaten them worse than Idaho did). On top of all that Idaho was a 2-pt conversion from sending the Montana game to OT despite being -3 in turnovers. I think it's justified to have them still ranked above Montana.

Why is Idaho ahead of Montana???
Well if you look at both teams the resume for Idaho is still slightly stronger...maybe more thanslightly. I mean the head to head starts to mean less and less in the 2nd 1/2 of the season anyway but I don't think anyone can be faulted for not making that one game the decider.
Montana was in 4th place as far as just BSC teams for me. Sac is ahead of Idaho even though they lost that game and I was less sure about that set than the Montana/Idaho set.

I say this in self-criticism looking back at my poll but I think plenty fell into this trap over over-valuing USD's and UND's wins over NDSU. Maybe the Bison turn it around (I doubt it) but beating them isn't looking like all that impressive of a feat this year and that's been mainly what USD and UND are parleying into top 10 rankings right now. USD needed a last second FG to beat YSU, who the consensus has as barely hanging in the top 25, at home.

I get it but if you are going to have them close in the poll might as well have the winner be ahead. Not going to call anyone out but it seems dumb to have Idaho 2 spots ahead of Montana.

YSU probably is. The problem with many is getting over the overall record. We all know that not all 3-3 teams are equal, but they are still 3-3 with 2 of those wins being over RMU and Valpo. The last 2 weeks show how capable YSU is, so if they keep that up they will climb.

I agree with both of you here.
YSU was #20 in the poll last week, travelled to the #10 team, lost on a last second FG, and then fell 3 spots. That is the very definition of slot voting that gets AGS so frustrated over the other polls. They even fell behind Florida A&M who was idle! YSU stayed pretty much where I had them last week in mine, and if it wasn't for UND & Montana jumping them might have gotten bumped up a spot even.
YSU probably is. The problem with many is getting over the overall record. We all know that not all 3-3 teams are equal, but they are still 3-3 with 2 of those wins being over RMU and Valpo. The last 2 weeks show how capable YSU is, so if they keep that up they will climb.
They also played Ohio State pretty tough, and they absolutely destroyed highly ranked Southern Illinois. The final in that game was 31-3 but that score is actually closer than the game was.

Actually, we ended the 1983 season #2 then we opened the 1984 season as the #1 team. I think we finished that year at #14 or 15 just missing the playoffs.

Wikipedia, FWIW, disagrees with most of this except for the #14 ranking at the end of 1984 regular season.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_NCAA_Division_I-AA_football_rankings
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_NCAA_Division_I-AA_football_rankings
FUBeAR knows WCU was runner-up in the National Championship game in 1983, but he cannot find a poll after the end of the regular season poll which had Furman @ #2 and WCU @ #9. And also the 1st ‘84 poll he sees was 3 weeks into the season with Furman 3-0 and #1 … and WCU unranked. But FU lost 3 of 4 SoCon games mid-season (including to WCU) and also missed the playoffs for the 1st time since reclassifying to I-AA.
Don’t doubt…but would like to see … you got links for those polls you mention?

Nope - it’s always been MVFC, Big Sky, and SoCon. Some of y’all just lost your objectivity when GaSou and Appy moved to the land of irrelevance, and Elon dipped down to the CAA - all in the same season. And the responses to this observation will prove that point.

my own words come back to haunt
I don't know about haunt. Just felt that in that Montana @ Idaho game, that the Vandals simply ran out of time.
That said, the Vandals were also responsible for how they performed most of the 1st half. I just think the good 'ol eye-test suggested that while the scoreboard showed loss, it was not quite reflective of the better team; rather, it reflected (IMO) a bit of a hiccup in performance for a half by one team. That said, I do believe that Montana is definitely on to something as well and am looking forward to seeing how they finish the season.

If I had made a poll this week, I would've had ranked Idaho ahead of Montana.
I also would have had Harvard ahead of Holy Cross.

Are you sure about North Carolina A&T Aggies at #11?
He must've meant NC Central.

That 28 point loss to Youngstown State and kinda, sorta fluky win over SEMO still resonates with me. As do their wins over AP and NIU. The Salukis can prove a lot this weekend. Go down swinging against SDSU and i'll happily move up the Salukis.
I don't think a lot separates SIU, YSU, UND and USD at this point. Even NDSU and UNI could have a say before its all said and done. Thankfully, looking at schedules they'll be some sorting out in the coming weeks....

Why is Montana ahead of NAU?
One good game (or two, for that matter) doesn't make a season if you suck the rest of the games.

Richmond is coming off a solid win over URI and have a pretty clear path to 8-3 and the playoffs imo. Perhaps they're finally living up to their preseason Top 25 billing? Time will tell. NDSU has two "get right games" up next before heading to Brookings. My guess is they'll beat-up on WIU and Murray State, like a good team should, to move back into the Top 20.
As of now, the Bison look like a 7-4, maybe even a 6-5 team. Just feels so weird to type...

What dreks? My poll very much reflects AGS's in general. The two caveats? I don't have W&M and NDSU in the Top 25. Two teams that were in the Top 10/5 not too long ago. When HC lost to Harvard I dropped them from 4 to 20 iirc, YSU's loss to UNI sent them from #12 to UR, Montana had a similar fall and rise after a to NAU and win over Idaho respectively. I'm trying to gauge some of these teams ceiling/floors relative to expectations and national perception. It's only one week...
I had NDSU #14 last week, #15 two weeks ago, #2 on 9/24....

So Richmond has an easy remaining schedule, therefore they are a good football team?
Are we ranking teams that are good, or teams that will be most likely to get into the playoffs?
I think Davidson has a pretty good shot at the playoffs, yet they do not appear in your poll.
Harvard has absolutely no shot, yet you rank them #14.:D
Spiders have been too inconsistent this season. I would not consider URI a quality win. And what about the losses to Morgan St AND Hampton?
IMO, you are putting too much weight on W-L record.

I had EWU ranked with a losing record last week. It's all contextual. We'll see how this plays out.
I do think Richmond will beat W&M at the end of the season. A team that's in the AGS Top 25. I could see the Tribe losing to Towson this week.

Richmond has losses to a 1-4 Morgan State and 3-3 Hampton! WTF does "a clear path to 8-3" have to do with their ranking today? Same with "the Bison look like a 7-4 or 6-5 team"? They are 4-2 right now with losses to 2 top 10 teams. I think this NDSU team is being a bit punished for the programs last decade plus of dominance. They have lost to 2 top 25 teams. Yes they got blown out this last game by a solid team on the road but they still have a more impressive resume than most of the top 25 IMO.

Morgan State had an interesting start to the year that has now turned tragic. They lost to Akron in ridiculous fashion, to Albany in OT and by 10 to Towson. The wheels have fallen off sadly. Trust me, I don't see Richmond's ceiling much higher than 20-25. I have Florida A&M positioned based on a similar thought process..
I have no idea what the Bison are right now given their most recent performance and some obvious "slippage". I think there's a mental/cultural factor at play with NDSU that other teams/programs don't have to deal with. Entz needs to use these next two weeks to not only hone in the execution, but more importantly, get the Bison's dominant edge back.
I dinged Holy Cross pretty hard too after the lost to Harvard, 16 spot fall iirc. I'm interested to see how they do against a 5-1 Lafayette team (do not have ranked, this week will tell the tail even in a hard fought defeat), Fordham and Army before I push them closer to the Top 10 again. I look at YSU and Montana in similar lights, varying degrees of an enigma. In a rematch, I still like Idaho over the Griz. Even in Missoula. Is that a dumb thought process? Maybe...
With NDSU there is just a lot of "noise" currently and i'd venture to say it's never been louder. Water ultimately finds its level, like with some other teams, i'll let it settle itself in due time.
MVFC is a really tough league to gauge right now after SDSU. I'm not sure what to do with the Salukis either. And i feel like I have USD a bit overrated but they do have wins over of NDSU in Fargo and a respectable OOC dub over Lamar.
Also of note, I dropped UIW out of the Top 10 for the first time this year....

Yeah, anyone not ranking NDSU right now is wrong. They are a good team. A very good team. Just not a top 5 or maybe not a top 10 team. Still a solid team. Anything from 11-20 would arguably be a realistic and deserving rank for them. Everything else is posturing.

I had them 14-15 after their being #2. I don't believe that based on such a precedent it is "absurd" to drop them out for a week or two in order to see how things play out. Odds are, just like Montana and YSU they work they way back in. Maybe W&M will too?!?! The Bison have plenty of opportunities to show their worth, create their own story for 2023 with SDSU, SIU and UNI lined up in November. If W&M wins this week I will likely move them back in. I think Towson is pretty feisty this year....

When I dropped Montana, W&M, YSU etc out no one batted an eye. Likwise when i dropped Holy Cross 16 spots after Sluka struggled and Harvard physically beat up the Crusaders in their backyard. But with the Bison it's different because of the "power of perception" given their decade run of dominance. I'm a quirky cat. There's a method behind my madness in terms of mine and others perceptions/critique of teams. Like i said, I had the Bison #14 last week so my baseline was already considerably lower than the majority.
NDSU this year is a bit like Clemson. I don't believe the Tigers have worked their way back into the Top 25 despite their 4-2 record....

To be fair, no one batted an eye when you dropped NDSU from #2 to #15 two weeks ago either.
I've found I can do the same thing in a poll 3-4 weeks in a row before someone who disagrees with it notices and brings it to everyones attention.
I will say this about your poll: not having NDSU in isn't egregious, but having Richmond in it is. Bison would easily be 6-1 against their schedule and the Spiders are 4-3.

I do not think I would rank Spiders just yet, but all might not know Richmond beat Stony with the #3 walk on QB that had not taken a snap in practice after the starter could not go and back up went down in first half. They tried the guy again at Hampton and got one first down by penalty in the first half and brought on the #4 true freshman they intended to let run the scout team and redshirt. He did drive them to two TDs in the second half but too little too late. He has been the starter in the wins the last two weeks. The #1 can go this week according to the Head Coach, but they do not know if he or the #4 is going to start.
There is a reason Spiders have been inconsistent, and time will tell if they are good when healthy, Morgan State was inexcusable.
Spiders are also getting others back in the two deep at various positions. OL and DL each got one back last week and the DL guy had 3 of Richmond's 6 sacks last week.
Still thin at CB, but pretty good outside that for now.
Not excuse making, it is what it is, just did not know if some were aware why they have been up and down. Of course, it could be they are just not good. but might want to see how they fare for the next couple of games before completely writing them off.
