What do you guys think about the idea of relegation in college football? Completely hypothetical idea. Many issues
FOr those of you who don't know what that is, in European Football (Soccer) LEagues, there are many leagues of teams, such as 1-AA to 1-A, the top 3 teams of the league below are promoted to the league above and the worst 3 teams are relegated to the lower division. How 'bout that in college football? Say Temple, Duke, and 1 other become 1-AA teams and Delaware, Richmond and App State/SIU (only picking UD and Rich, due to geographic location) become 1-A teams. I know this would never work, but it has always made the EPL that much more exciting.
And the Browns could switch place with Ohio State. :p ;)
Thoughts? If you need further explanation, just ask.

It would force Duke to actually field a football team

I don't know about other countries' leagues, but in the Dutch league, the worst team is relegated directly, and the 2nd and 3rd worst teams battle it out with the runners up and 3rd best from the league below for a 2nd promotion spot, similarly the outright winner is promoted directly.

It would be hard to figure out the bottom team in FBS every year, though. I like the idea of the 2nd and 3rd worst teams battling the 2nd and 3rd teams below.
That would force FCS to have a consolation game and then a four team tournament to see who is relegated/promoted and who stays.
You're right about it never working though. For one, no way the NCAA is gonna let that many games take place. Plus, there's the scholarship issue. Teams would have to add scholarships if they moved up and teams that moved down would have to cut player scholarships.

I wouldn't support relegation in college sports but I would support relegation in professional sports here in the U.S. But my guess it will never happen since the financial implicatons are too much with todays salaries here. Just look at Leeds and my beloved Sheffield Wednesday in the U.K.!

I wouldn't support it of only because I would be really pissed if the elite of FCS "moved up" and played in the Consolidated Agriculture Hybrid 14-B Bowl in Bumblefarge, Arkansas.
But that's just me. I don't like the idea of playing in a system where lazy, lazy writers vote for the same 15 teams every week regardless of how good they actually are because they can't be bothered to truly follow the sport they get paid to cover.

The D-Rays would be relegated right down to short-season Rookie ball. xlolx

Indeed, but there's precedent for it. When European teams get relegated, they usually have to sell or rent out their high-priced players in order to be able to meet their payroll with reduced revenue.
A couple of other notes: the promotion/relegation scheme usually applies to all serious sports, such as ice hockey, basketball, handball, etc. not just soccer. Also, there isn't a professional vs. amateur distinction; if a team of amateurs is good enough to get promoted to the top division, so be it.

I don't support it in college sports, but strongly advocate it in pro sports.
Imagine the "pennant race" between the Royals and Rays to avoid being sent down to AAA.
