This week's poll article: https://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-week-2-top-25-results-2023/

Talk about a boring week... the shakeups are coming though with how weighted the top half of the poll is with Big Sky and MVFC teams; 10 of the top 15 are from those two conferences. Throw in the CAA and SOCON and that's 20 of the top 25. I'd expect someone(s) from the UAC and SWAC to crack the top 25 soon.

I apologize for jinxing Southeastern Louisiana for talking about their top 25 streak last week which came to an end with this poll (they had been in the top 25 in the last 45 AGS Poll releases).

Starting to see some general consensus in the top 7, give or take a spot on every ballot. The average difference between one team and the team below them for the top 7 is 44.167, which is nearly dead on with 44 voters (if everyone had the exact same votes, the difference from one to the next would be 44pts). Then there's W&M with a 71pt drop from Furman, suggesting that some voters punished them for their performance against a weak Chuck South (rightfully, IMO). The difference from #9 to #11 was a mere 27 points so voters felt you could put them in a hat and pick em. Then there's a BIG jump from #11 to #12 and again from #12 to #13, which I interpret as voters no longer having any semblance of consensus on the rest of the teams. It's still early-ish, but I just found it interesting that there appears to be only about 7 teams that everyone ranked very similarly to the other voters and nearly everyone probably has an outlier or 3 on their ballot that is much higher/lower than the poll results. Now that conference slates are set to begin (and few FBS games that muddy the waters with their lopsided results), I wonder if the consensus for the top teams grows a bit.

Hard to believe William & Mary's position in this poll. I soured after week one (#6-#24-#23-#24 so far), but I would allow voters to take that as a fluke. But two mediocre-to-ugly performances like that (and really nothing in the second half vs. Wofford either) leaves a lot of question marks.

Montana made their debut in my poll this week at #23. Felt validated by the close opening match. Respect for the Ferris State win, but it was at home after all. That doesn't scream "obvious top 10-15 omission" but I shall not forget when 2014 Sam Houston was boat-raced out of their own house by CSU-Pueblo. (Of course, Villanova beats that squad with a healthy John Robertson and they are "merely" a quarterfinalist.) Good enough to rank the Grizz, and I wouldn't object to mid-teens.

I’m pretty sure you were one of the biggest advocates here last year saying, among other things, that just because a ranked team keeps winning shouldn’t mean they get to automatically keep that ranking (or move up when teams in front of them lose). So I guess FUBeAR’s finally getting what he’s asked for!

That being said, I held Furman at #5 but Idaho and Sac State were right on their heels.

Exactly. They fell ONE spot because Sac State, who had been #8, jumped 3 spots after beating P5 Stanford (along with Idaho and W&M). Furman's win over a bottom-quarter-of-FCS TTU </= Sac's win over Commerce, loss @ South Carolina < win @ Nicholls and win @ Kennesaw (who also lost to Chatty)<<< win @ Stanford. I think that's pretty fair.

Holy Cross is simply that good! I would expect most of the teams in the mid to late teens to get thumped just the same. I'm much higher on YSU than most this year. I thought they had a claim last year to make the playoffs. Conversely, not that high on Weber State. I have them as the 5th or 6th best team in the Big Sky and fringe Top 25. There's a conference dynamic in place with UNI/YSU too so using the transitive score theory doesn't really work. Not that it really ever works....

Can't say that I agree with letting the soup simmer on Campbell, but ranking Harvard week 1, particularly as high as 18. Harvard was last in the Ivy based on Keeper's returning strength - you guys (Delaware) got their best 2022 receiver. I'll post mine this week so you can give it your best shot.

The UNH vs Delaware game should be very close, and fairly high scoring. Right now UNH, URI and Delaware are very hard to call. I can understand the reluctance to rank URI too high - they've managed to lose the key game which would have put them in the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 seasons. Delaware and UNH have very similar offenses so it may come down to the defenses Saturday.

Not exactly sure what your point is on Campbell ? Are you saying there already in your top 25 or still a long way off? Edit: I see now you have em at 23…. Ok I won’t forget about this …

Kym Wimberly is the WR from Harvard a 1 year grad student from Slidell, La who I was excited to see choosing Delaware for his final year. He had a spectacular 48 yard TD reception Saturday that is a must see.

I agree with you on URI and our game this week. Delaware D will be exposed by Dylan McLaube like he had Wings ….

I understand the conference opponent dynamic, but if an unranked BBQ can go in there and win by 17, surely the #12 team in the country wins by at least 2 TD's, not?

Actually no one voted for St. Thomas in the preseason poll (https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?336272-AGS-Poll-Results-2023-Wk0). Perhaps you were thinking of the final poll of 2022 (https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?322081-AGS-Poll-FINAL-Results-2022-SEASON) or maybe recalled seeing them as "dropped out" in the FCS Wedge write-up for the preseason poll (https://thefcswedge.com/ags-poll/ags-poll-preseason-2023-top-25-results/)?

Laube will likely get his 200+ all purpose yards, but the UNH offense works best when QB Max Brosmer is accurately distributing the ball among 8 or 9 wide receivers for 200 more yards. The UNH defense may be incrementally better, we'll see. I know nothing about your QB, against CMU and Dartmouth the UNH D-Line was focused on containing an excellent running QB, if your guy is primarily a pocket passer we'll finally get to see how Dylan Ruiz and Josiah Silver can work together rushing the passer. I expect to see Delaware's Marcus Yarns get his 120 rushing yards and you've been right about how good the Hen's WRs are playing.

I thought I was going to be the only one with St Thomas in their poll. Guess you see something too?

For me, it is the fact that they are a former D-III with a successful past, a pretty darned good showing last year, and have invested and are quite serious about their football program. Oh, and they were picked to finish first in the Pioneer (which I only saw after I had submitted my poll). I know...Pioneer, but still. What I had seen from them most of last year was not that different in quality from watching a Friday evening Ivy game...caribbeanhen in 10, 9, 8, ...

Haha

Well mark September 16th on your calendar because Harvard is hosting St Thomas

it’s put up or shut up time for Ivy League in this one

How do people see the Big Sky? This is a conference I follow closely yet I am not nearly as high on UC Davis and Weber State as others. My observations tell me Montana State, Idaho, Sac State and Montana are the top 4 in the BSC and are legit semifinal or better contenders imo. Then there's a drop off after...

I will acknowledge that Weber State's conference slate is favorable. Their road games are basically the dreks of the conference. This week will tell a lot...

Sorry. Late to the party. As CB quoted, there were a couple of votes (myself included) for the Tommies…in a preseason poll.

Definitely a slow week when we are talking 2 votes or 5 pt in a preseason poll, but what else is there to talk about? Even FuBEAR can’t get us talking about Furman…it’s the Tommies.

A vote for Harvard at 25 or so seems about right. Thank goodness they did not have the chance to lose in the first two weeks. ;)

Also, this is usually the week caribbean makes his national champion declaration, so looking forward to that. ;P

IMO MSU, Idaho & Sac are on top. These 3 teams are going to the playoffs and at least 2 of the 3 will be seeded.

Weber and UCD are somewhat mysteries right now, but neither look to be as good as last year. Eastern is somewhat of a sneaky mystery too, are they for real? Montana is this close to putting for sale signs in Haucks yard, luckily he's still 3-0 but he's a 3-0 paper tiger imo. UM's offense has big problems if they can't score more than 17 on a D2, gonna be a long conference slate. They've got 2 in the bank, 2 50/50s, and 3 beat downs coming their way.

I personally jumped the gun on putting St Thomas in. They definitely are not a Top 25 team this year. Do they have the potential to be down the road a few years? Maybe? Unless the Tommies go Scholly sometime down the road(which I don’t see happening at least in the near future. 10-15 years from now I can see it happening.) I don’t think they’d be competitive enough to do anything.

It’s appreciated.

Special teams and red zone offense are liabilities. Visperas has played well against solid competition. Running game is improved and the defense is considerably better than last year so far.

We’re a wild card at this point. Will know a bunch after the next two: @Davis, Idaho.

Listening to the last quarter of game doing a landscaping project, I was expecting SLU to march the field for the game winner, in 2022 EWU defense fashion. Then the pick-6 to provide some space. Then solid D to force the turnover-on-downs (close to the first down on 3rd, but held and then held on 4th and 1). I thought to myself... well, this is a bit different! Still 29 points given up, but far from the 42+ from last year. This week in the Big Sky is going to start sorting things out a bit. 6 Big Sky teams in the top 15 and a 7th in the top 30 is too many anyway. EWU-Davis wasn't one I was interested in to start the year, but it is now! Sac @ Idaho will be a slobberknocker. MSU @ WSU will tell us how "for real" BBQ is. Tommy getting, or needing, more time to heal from whatever injury he has (Vigen wouldn't specify but it doesn't require surgery and didn't damage any ligaments).

Ryan O'Connor, 6'3", 195lbs. I believe he was with the Hens last season and saw some playing time. Not sure the passing game will be featured much this Saturday evening by either team - high winds and heavy rain from a "sub" tropical storm.

There’s an 84 post thread here doing nothing more than trying to turn a D2 Team into the ‘72 Dolphins which proves how important that is to y’all.

Meanwhile a SWAC Team rolled up a comparable D2 Team by 3 scores, as any fully-funded FCS Team should do, but not a peep about that game.

There wasn't much chatter about it, but it does seem AGS did notice the result you highlighted. Florida A&M was bumped up from #33 the previous week to #26 this week, while Montana was dinged slightly falling from #12 to #13.

But what makes them "comparable"? Because they're both ranked in the top 10 of the D2 poll? They were both top 10 last season when Ferris State beat the same "comparable" team by the exact same 21 point margin.

If one assumes that the "comparable" team hasn't closed the gap between them, and since Ferris State and the #26 team in last weeks AGS poll are both 21 points better than this "comparable" team, we can conclude that Ferris State is a fringe top 25 team, no? Even if the "comparable" team closed the gap to 14 points, Ferris State is only 7 points worse than a fringe top 25 team. But you think we should be acting like Montana played a JV 9 man football team last week.

OK, OK…y’all have beaten FUBeAR down.

FUBeAR succumbs and will agree to acknowledge that Montana effectively proved last week that they are almost as good as some SWAC Teams.

Florida A&M is almost universally recognized as the best team in the SWAC. Using comparative scores, Ferris State is equal to Florida A&M (again, the best team in the SWAC). Montana is 7 points better than Ferris State (who, again, is equal to the best team in the SWAC). FUBeAR's conclusion: Montana is "almost" as good as "some" SWAC teams.

For someone who is constantly using comparative scores when arguing why one team is better than another, your commitment to completely ignoring comparative scores in this case is.....commendable?
