Hero Sports stopped publishing a non-D-I game list for the FCS this season, so if you guys help me with finding a new list, post the link here.

So, will the PFL become the scapegoats of top-ranked NAIA and D-II teams once again this season? xdontknowx

There's actually a decent amount of stuff to talk about regarding this list.

1. FuBEAR you are correct, I'm not sure why Big Sky would lead the way on this and it is a bad look for their conference.
2. WHY is Kennesaw State playing 3, when it is transitioning to the FBS? Seems like a bad idea will make the harder SoS next year even more shocking.
3. If I read that list correctly Valpo is playing AT an NAIA school week 2? That is wild
4. Lincoln CA (D2) plays a total of 8 games against D1 schools (FCS / FBS transitioning). Has to be one of the hardest SoS in D2. They play 1 NAIA team, 8 D1 teams and then only 2 D2 teams...

1) Big Sky Teams have it figured out… >Wins = > Playoff Selections + Higher Seeds. Ain’t nobody studyin’ strength of schedule; the Playoff Selection Committee dang sure ain’t, despite what they say. It’s all a sham. Wish the Committee would figure out the Big Sky the way the Big Sky has figured out ‘the game.’

2) Just speculatin’ on the owlets - As their FCS Conferences have blown up and all of those Teams were scrambling to fill their dance cards with games in their new conferences…and don’t think Teams were that excited about playing a non-money game against an 85 schollie ‘FCS’ Team…particularly on the road. Believe the games against Chatt and FU were already scheduled OOC games for these SoCon Teams. FUBeAR expects the owlets to Redshirt a slew of Players, but those Players still get 4 games - would expect that Chatt, FU, Tennessee State, and SHSU will get the owlets’ best…while the rest of the games will be played with deep backups. It’s messy - and ugly … but nobody goes to their games and no one cares about them anyway - so their hideous schedule is a tree falling in a deep, uninhabited forest. Maybe they’ll do better in 2024 when they are BIG TIME!!! xlolx

First, I only see 4 BSC teams playing down: CWU @ Weber, North American @ Portland State, Ferris State @ Montana and Lincoln @ Cal Poly. Who am I missing? Or are you forgetting that Southern Utah joined the WAC for 2022? If I'm not missing any, that works out to .33/team and drops them to T-3rd on the list with UAC, which actually has 3 games against lower divisions.

Next, FUBeAR can rest easy that 2 of those teams (PSU and CP) haven't been and likely won't be sniffing the playoffs. Beating perennial D-II power and 2x defending champ Ferris St. should definitely add to one's SOS. Weber is a bit of an unknown, IMO. They lost a ton of production and a pretty good HC. I can see them finishing 6-5 with a D-II win pretty easily, losing @UNI, @Utah, vs MSU, vs UC Davis, and vs Idaho. Weber also offset the easy win against CWU for a sure loss against Utah, so if they scheduled in order to make the playoffs... they did it wrong, especially considering their other OOC game is @UNI. But tell me more about how the Big Sky scheduled lower division games for more playoff selections.

Yeah - looked at old standings to pick up S.UT. They are UAC. Ur right on that one point…

Corrected list…

6 - MVFC - 1 | 0.08 / Team
7 - CAA - 0 | 0.00 / TeamBut…looking for ‘extra credit’ for your hated Griz for scheduling a 36 Schollie Team…um…No…just No.

And, FUBeAR never counts a Big Sky Team out of Playoff consideration. Seems just yesterday that Cal Poly was in the Playoffs losing to a non-scholarship Team … or maybe that was Northern Arizona losing to a non-scholarship Team. It’s difficult to keep the many Big Sky Playoff flame-outs straight.

But FUBeAR’s expectation is always that all 12 Big Sky Teams will be selected for the Playoff Field and the Committee will find a way to seed all 12 in the Top 8. That way, when the BSC only gets 10 in with 7 Seeds, FUBeAR is less enraged.

I think PC has the best chance of stumbling against Virginia Lynchburg. They only beat them last year by 8, for their only win, and was otherwise quite awful. I don't know what kind of financial mishaps Virginia Lynchburg is in but they seem to be playing nothing but D1 games and D2 games against decent teams. Now that I'm looking at it, Lynchburg doesn't even look like it's NAIA? I'm have a hard time deducing this one. They're NCCAA, which has to be a step down from NAIA.

Anyway, that game should be the equivalent of two mules fighting for a turnip

and Portland State hosting North America: PSU had a Div 1 team scheduled and the team backed out late, leaving very little opportunity for PSU to refill that date with a Div 1 school.

Great!!

Hopefully that argument will retroactively get Mercer into the 2021 Playoffs...

...because WE KNOW if Portland State finishes 6-2 in FCS games (6-2 in Conference), including a 3-point loss in the final seconds to the Seeded Big Sky Champ in the final regular season game of the year (exactly as Mercer did ALL of those), that the Vikings will be IN the Playoffs ... and that's without playing SacState OR Idaho OR Weber.

I'm surprised anyone is wondering why this is the case. It's been discussed on this site repeatedly over the years.

Taking a look at this map might provide the answer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_FCS_football_programs#/media/File:NCAA_FCS_programs.png

It's a long way from most of the western schools to out of conference schools, meaning it's hard and/or expensive to get an out of conference opponent. That's why you 've seen Big Sky teams schedule each other for out of conference games sometimes if they aren't scheduled to play in-conference that year, and why they get closer D2 schools to come play sometimes instead of FCS.
Schools out east/south have so many more possibilities. For instance they can play a juggernaut like Tennessee Tech or Morehead State (we played them too, last year) rather than get someone from across the country to visit.

In the case of schools that are struggling for money like Portland State, they don't have the budget to bring in an FCS team from out east. They're playing 2 FBS teams to make some money to support the program, but they'd like to get at least 1 non-conference games at home, so they bring in what they can.

Montana and Montana State make their money off of ticket sales. Consequently they want 6 home games. That means paying someone to come here. Usually those are smaller schools that have smaller budgets or more need for the money, or sometimes someone who wants to have a quality game/match up with a team that they don't see often (we also do Home and Homes like SDSU this year but to keep 6 home games we usually only have one of those going at a time). But we can't compete with FBS schools - if Furman wants a payday, do they go to SC or travel out to Bozeman for half the payoff?

I agree it's not a good look, and it's far from ideal, but that's the way things are. I doubt any of them would prefer those schedules to an all FCS schedule in an ideal world.

This is why I don't like people using SOS at this level when criticizing different conferences. Schedules are made to minimize revenue losses. Cross country travel for a regular season OOC game really only happens with Western schools who internalize that cost anyway.

I for one don't blame the Western schools for scheduling this way, it's just frustrating when my team, a small private school with probably more fixed costs and less revenue compared to the Western schools does the same thing, on top of the fact that playoff hosting almost always tips in favor of the big state school with ticket revenues, which IMO always contributes to a competitive advantage.

My joke on here is never ask a man his income, a woman her weight, and a Big Sky team that last time they won on the road in their first playoff game. Montana State is a good example of this: they're a great, accomplished program, but they've only one like won road playoff game in their D1 history. I don't think Sacramento State has ever played on the road.

Even if you don't think it's much of a competitive advantage, it's buzzkill for eastern teams who aren't, say, James Madison. Because if you get a home playoff game, congrats, it's Thanksgiving weekend when attendance sucks everywhere. And then if you win that game, you get the privilege of being shipped across the country and fans have no reasonable expectation of attending.

No worries - all Teams have reasons for doing what they do. A SoCon Team giving a D2 Team a game because the Coaches wives are sisters is no better or worse than a UAC Team doing the same in order to get water rights the D2 has on a piece of property adjacent to their practice field to all of the reasons you enumerated why a Big Sky Team might do it. We don’t need to and shouldn’t make those sort of qualitative judgments…and neither should the Playoff Committee.

But - you think PSU goes to the Playoffs in the scenario FUBeAR laid out…don’t they? We all know it’s a “Yes.” 6-2 in the Big Sky, 7 wins (D2 win) with a bunch of screwy scheduling anomalies and a stellar, but just barely losing performance against the Big Sky Seeded Champion in the Season-Ender gets the Vikings IN.

Whether it should or should not is not the point - the point is same scenario gets a Big Sky in, but doesn’t for a SoCon school. That’s the problem. Well, only part of the problem…

The problem of which the above is part, is that the Committee, IFBO, just does not DEEP DIVE into strength of schedules. They are good with 7 or 8 wins and we’re gettin’ seeded at 9…even if 2 of those were over a non-schollie or a D2 and a transitioning that has won 4 D1 games in 3 seasons.

Scheduling is hard for all Teams. No Teams deserve some kind of ‘pass’ cuz they think the row they’re hoeing is tougher. And the Committee needs to DRILL DOWN on all selection and seeding decisions. FUBeAR does not think they do - not nearly enough.

Wow, Texas College@Central Arkansas, the poor Steers.

SFA beat Texas College back in 2009 (92-0)

Glad to see SFA has all Division I games this season for a change.

Ferris St at Montana is a real interesting one. You'd have to think Montana is regretting scheduling that one. It's a lose-lose, if you win it's what you were supposed to do and the committee doesn't count it, if you lose it's an embarrassing loss. Similar to how FBS teams must feel scheduling the top FCS teams, at least those games count towards bowl eligibility.

85-63 = 22
63-36 = 27
27-22=5
5/22 = ~23%

An FCS Team losing to a D2 is 23% worse than an FBS Team losing to a FCS Team.

Montana should have 3rd Teamers in by midway thru the 2nd quarter

Not exactly…

The CACC doesn’t sponsor Football.

The Post Eagles are independent in 2023, but just to add to EVERYONE’S confusion, they are joining the Northeast in 2024. But not the D1 FCS Northeast Conference (NEC). Nope, this Post Team will be posting up in the D2 Northeast-10 Conference (NE10). https://posteagles.com/news/2023/5/10/post-university-football-to-join-northeast-10-as-associate-member.aspx

Let’s keep ‘em STRAIGHT!

If Portland state finishes 6-2, I'll give you all my money.

It's times like these that following both DI-AA/FCS football and D2 football in the Northeast helps. xnodxxlolx

Somewhat ironically, it is the NE-10 (D2) schools moving up to DI-AA/FCS (CW Post, Merrimack, Stonehill) that is indirectly causing teams like Post (and not too long ago, Franklin Pierce) to start football programs/move up to D2. All three of those new DI-AA/FCS schools I mentioned went from the D2 NE-10 to the DI-AA/FCS NEC, and the NE-10, generally one of the weakest conferences in D2, has to backfill those spots with other programs in the region like Post.

FWIW, Weber was scheduled to play a home-and-home against James Madison in 2022 and 2023. JMU asked to be released from the contract when they went FBS and Weber ended up replacing them with two D2 games. Scheduling D2 games certainly wasn’t Weber’s first choice.

I agree that 6-2 is highly unlikely but I wouldn't bet all my money on it. They have CP, ISU-o and @NoCo as very winnable games. @NAU is more challenging (something about Walkup....) but not unfathomable. I didn't realize that PSU could even up the Dam Cup with a victory at home, strong motivation in a rivalry game. @MSU is a loss. If they can win one of @Davis or vs. Montana.... xrotatehx Is it likely they beat NAU, EWU and one of the Davis or UM games. Not in the slightest. Would I put my net worth on it? Not a chance in hell.

That said, now they'll probably lose all but CP and ISU-o at home...

I hope you made them pay the buyout fees for both games. Would have been kinda neat to have an FBS team play on the road against an FCS.

Somewhat related to the discussion above (posts 36-40) - last season in Stonehill's first season as a DI-AA/FCS team, they played at D2 Bloomsburg. It was the second half of a home-and-home between the two teams; Stonehill hosted in 2021.

I know for a fact that's not he first time Valpo has played an NAIA program as they played Lindenwood in the 2000's back when they were NAIA. I can't for the life of me remember which year that was though.

Rumors where that Lindenwood was possibly setting up a game with Graceland to fill their early open date, which kinda made sense since Graceland's current HC is LU all times wins leader Pat Ross. LU is playing one of the 500 Wisconsin D3 schools instead.

Playing an NAIA is different than playing AT an NAIA as an away game for the FCS team though. Or are you saying Valpo has traveled to an NAIA team in the past?

I went searching for the Valpo-Lindenwood game. The oldest year available was 2005. Valpo played AT Wisconsin Lutheran (D-III) and AT Aurora (also D-III). They also played AT Wisco Lutheran the next season. In 2007, Valpo played AT D-III Trinity International and LOST. They apparently have a long history of playing at D-III schools, often losing (42-7 blowout loss at Franklin College in 2010 - this is where I gave up.)

Valpo win 27-6. Lindenwood was really really bad. I think they won 3 or 4 games in a 3 year span. Patrick Ross came in 2004 and went 11-0.

Varsity football is pretty new there unless they had a program in past and re-launched. They had a sprint football program recently and played their inaugural varsity season at the NCAA D-II level in 2021. They are now a member of the Northeast-10 -- a solid leauge with the likes of Bentley, Assumption, St. Anselm and Pace. They lost a game to Stonehill last year 76-0.

The games you recall against Princeton must've been sprint games. Princeton had a famously awful sprint football (185lb. weight limit) team that went defunct a handful of years ago. I think they folded amidst a losing streak of 50 or 60 games. Something crazy. Army and Navy for the most part completely dominate that league -- Penn and Cornell have decent programs as well.

Nope … It’s that the SoCon doesn’t just add any satellite branch of the Boyd Dewey Fleasome Used Car Sales University (BDFUCSU) that decides to also sponsor a Football Team in order to pad win totals for Playoff resumes.
