Jeff Bower FIRED this morning.
There was never even an indication all season long that his job was even in question.

Can you say BLINDSIDED. xeekx

There's got to be more to this.
If not, there are gonna be some mad as hell USM football fans.

To them, that guy could do no wrong.
In fact, he's been the best coach in Mississippi with damm near the least.
Can't believe they fired him during a rebuilding period that really was not that bad.

Looks like the Ole Miss job might get filled pretty quick. Would be stupid for Hotty Totty U. not to consider JB. xnodx

I hope not. Bower deseves better than to work for them. After the way Ole Miss unfairly canned David Cutcliffe, I thought they deserved every minute of the hell that was "Ed Orgeron football."

I'm starting to think the administrations at all the Mississippi schools just don't give a damn about football.

Wasn't there some heat for getting Eastering (RB) from Miami? I think he's transferring after, USM took a chance on him.

After all the year's of Ole Miss running from this man, not a chance.
Both SEC school's in this state has made excuse after excuse not to play USM. xnodx
Ole Miss fan's would really be embarrased if they went after him now. xlolx

Bower probably would turn them down. xnodx

Not the Firing kind of heat.

People here know Jeff Bower will take a chance on a kid so that was not really an issue with the masses.

If Jeff Bower had got the in-state talent alone that Mississippi State and Ole Miss has gotten in the last 15 year's, he would have been in the N.C. hunt a whole bunch of times.xnodx

I didn't really think he'd get fired over that, but since I don't know much that goes on at USM, I just wondered if that factored in at all.

Georgia Tech should talk to him. There are a lot of openings out there and few proven head coaches with resumes as good looking as Bowers.

Here's a great analysis of the decision to remove Bower:

No More Mr. Nice Guy: Bower Fired at Southern Miss (http://www.sundaymorningqb.com/story/2007/11/26/132022/61)

I think it's pretty objective, considering the writer is a fan of Bower.

Jeff is a native of the Atlanta area.

I was shocked by this news. Sports radio here in Mobile has him on several times each week and I've always liked him. He's certainly done a good job for them over there. Oh, well, hopefully bigger and better things are in store for Coach Bower.

This is shocking - I always thought he did a great job with his limited resources.

This is gonna bite USM in the arse big time.
They can re-write what happened early Monday Morning if they want to but Jeff was forced out.
He resigned just to save a head-ache.

USM is not going to get a better coach to come down there and stay.
Whoever they get will be out of there on the first plane smoking if they have sucess and job offer's follow.

Jeff Bower turned down numerous job offer's to stay at that place.
He was only making $500,000 a year base and his assistant's don't make squat.

The fan base is a joke.....................Forget all that "stagnant" crap.
USM is basically a commuter school and they just are not into supporting sport's like a winning program like Jeff Bower established deserves.

They have had 3 sellout's in their history:
Nebraska was one and Jackson State was the other 2. xsmhx
Sad part is, Nebraska bought the lion's share of their ticket's for that game and we had bout half of their stadium from buying ticket's outside of their 4,000 allotment to JSU.

This in a stadium that only seat's 33,000 in the stands.
When we played them, they brought in portable bleechers that added about 6,000 more.

Probably won't happen but if G. Tech hire's this man, the first person on his staff would be Tyrone Nix, Defensive Cord. for Spurrier and S. Corolina.

Nix got his start playing for and then coaching for Jeff and USM.
With G. Tech resources, they would whip all kind's of arse together at that place.xnodx

I won't say it definitely will bite them, but there's a damn good chance it will. The program was becomming stagnant, that I think is clear. Can USM do better? I don't know. I wouldn't bet on it, but then again, this has been a crazy crazy year for college football.

Very surprising. Must be something going on that's not yet public. USM, IMO, has usually played beyond expectations. And usually, that was due to a very good defense. Rarely would they get blown out, and most times they were in their games, even when they lost.
