Well put. UMass played well. The Saluki punter probably saved the day by making the Minutemen start from deep with some great kicks. Prior to this year our secondary was a weak point. They came up with some big INTs today against a very good QB.
Good game.

A lot of heroes today.
Randle, White and Warner combining for over 200 yards rushing.
Nick Hill being Nick (over 200 yards and 3 TDs).
Ravanesi and his punting.
Cloud, Johnson and Moe with INTs.
Cloud with his two sacks in the first half.
Gettis with his first TD catch of the year.
Craig Turner with 99 yards on three kick returns.
It was a team effort.

Only issue I had was # 55 was a cheap shot artist. Everyone kickoff he was taunting and in someone's helmet. There is no need for that. Also I found it classless for the UMass cheerleaders and mascot to do push ups in our end zone after 2 of their TD's. Sorry, but show some respect, you won't find our cheerleaders pulling that crap period. Honestly wish Grey & Brown Dawg would have run through the end zone and disrupted their work out :)

Sam Adams
December 2nd, 2007, 03:58 AM
Good game SIU. Congratulations.

There is nothing "classless" about cheerleaders and mascots supporting their teams. Pushups for TDs is a standard practice in college football.

Skinny and the Salukis,
Good luck next weekend. Stop the 6-12 yard gains, and you stop Delaware. Unfortunately, stop the intermediate, the Panthers could not. Go rep the Gateway(/MVC?), and we will see you in December at the McLeod!

By the way, don't look in the endzone for SIU's cheerleaders, you will find their cheerleaders on a stretcher on CBS doing the fight-song because they don't know how to "stunt";).

SIU played a great game. Had to give the edge to SIU's offensive and defensive lines in this game. Good luck against Delaware.

Our D line was noticeably smaller than UMass' O line but was faster and able to get pressure often with four rushing. UMass' D and SIU's O were more closely matched speed-wise, imo. Good game and it doesn't get any easier, I hope we don't have a let down over missing the rematch with UNI, I think they wanted that one real bad.

Turner was way overdue and the punting was HUGE, game ball huge.
Did you notice that old man TE on the first TD? Outran the pursuit from a dead stop after that catch. UMass is an excellent team but I think we had an edge in overall speed.

Not funny about Christi getting hurt @ the MVC tournament last year sorry UNI fan. To the UMass fan who thinks it is alright to show disrespect to the home team by doing push ups in the endzone after a TD, I guess that is acceptable to you, but sorry I liken it to the when TO dance on the star in Dallas. Thankfully they did all those push ups for nothing and only have sore arms to show for it.

Thankfully they did all those push ups for nothing and only have sore arms to show for it.

Our cheerleaders are in better shape than yours. Just kidding. Enjoy this win and stop obsessing about something so minor. Our cheerleaders do that at every game, as do cheerleaders for tons of other football programs. It is not "disrespect." It's called having fun and enjoying the college football experience. Maybe you should try it sometime. After all, you do have one of the four best teams in FCS. Good luck against the Hens.

They're the hottest right now, I think. What is impressive to me is that after all the talk I've heard about their weak defense this year, it was the two defensive TDs that were the margin of victory. That makes me feel a little better about being able to keep their offense reasonable and a little more nervous about us being able to score the 30 points we'll need as a minimum to win the game. Home field won't be an advatage after they've played at the dome.

Hope it rains like a cow pissing on a flat rock all week long.

I saw the poor D against Fordham, and new if they didn't tighten up for USI, that they would lose, and the first TD by the dogs, i new it had not.

That play spoke volumes if you noticed that SIU's TE was at a stop with his back to the end zone 50 yds. away when he caught the ball. He turned around and from a dead stop outran #11, who had a running start, to the end zone. Right there I knew we had the edge in team speed.

You are crazy... right there does not prove you had the edge in team speed. What about the fact of Rancher and Horne burning your DBs for tds easy. Right there points to UMass having the edge in team speed. Your TE burnt a biting LBer for the long pass down the middle.

When Coen had time he made some plays, he's a good QB, but he didn't have time often because our D-line was faster than your O-line. Our D had three picks and we burned your dbs for three TDs too. We also stuffed the run, I think 101 net rushing yards is below your average. Ball control? Ran out the last four minutes of the clock, the only four minutes that were closer than two scores besides the first two minutes of the game. Special teams? A little bit faster there, too. Not smack, just what I saw with my own eyes.

First of all Lawrence avg 4.7 yards per carry so I dont see how thats stuffing the run. We were down the whole game so we didnt run the ball as much as usual. I also stated our health on the OLine issue. We usually dont give up too much pressure or sacks during the Don Brown era. You did hold a good edge on special teams but that doesnt always equate to speed. Hell a good had nose blocking attack can provide great return yards for any kick returner. But anyways congrats on the win and good luck vs Delaware because you will need it. They beat your only loss by 12 at the dome. I see them winning by 2 tds.

Your team averaged 3.6 yds./carry on 101 net yards rushing. Lawrence was only the second RB this year to get 100 yards on us and your point about being down early is a good one that I didn't consider. Like I said, I don't know your injury situation, I think injuries are a given at this time of the year and the favorite may well be the healthiest team. True that a special teams edge doesn't always equate to speed, but usually it's a fair indicator of overall team speed, I think, and there is a reason why the Gateway quit kicking to Craig Turner for the last two years.

Seems to me that UNI did a pretty good job by holding UD's offense under 30 pts. and that UDs oft-maligned defense were the heroes this time. Do you really think that there is a 3 TD difference between UMass and UD? If UD is that much better than you guys, how did you win the conference?

I see in the local paper today that Liam Coen is pulling out the old "we beat ourselves, they couldn't stop us" whine.xsmhx He sounds just like JMU and UNH.

You mean with quotes like...

"We lost our composure and it hurt us. Those penalties swung the game."

Take away the three ints and UMass wins the game. With that said the INTs happened and we lost. I could name 100 things about the game on why we lost but it really doesnt matter because we did. Coens quote is being taken out of context. He stated to me that your defense could not stop him and our passing game. If our oline was healthy he would have thrown over 500 yards that game. He was on fire during the playoffs. The ints he through were all due to pressure. His first one... he got hit when he through... the second he couldnt step into the throw because Diana was in his lap from the pressure... the third he got hid and the ball was tiped in the air. Coen had 14 ints this year but over half of them were tiped balls. He had a better season this year then last with two less games. For a season in which he battled a knee injury... he had a great year.

Take away our four turnovers at UNI and we would be 13-0 right now...you can't take away what happened in the game...you guys got down by too many points and when it truly counted could not stop our offense from getting two critical first downs..Game Over...

No. Ones like this: "You're moving the ball, moving the ball, moving the ball. They're not stopping us. It's what I'm doing out there and what we're doing to ourselves." xrolleyesx

Must be the CAA party line since we also heard it from UNH and JMU, although it sounds like JMU may have been right. The CAA is the best conference and if they lose a game it was their own fault, because there aren't any good teams outside of their conference.xrolleyesx

Yeah, they sound just like the UNH and JMU fans.

I was at the game and it appeared to me the reason why UMass put up so many passing yards in the second half was because SIU went into the dreaded prevent defense. The SIU defense played too conservative (for my tastes) and didn't mix up coverages too well. If it was not showing the hand for the next game or what the coaches saw, it looked like they were playing not to lose.

I believe we went into the prevent with 6:52 left in the third when Warner's score made it a 34-13 game.. Pressure from the D line is what made the decision to sit in the prevent work. Seemed like Coen was throwing 10-15 yard patterns because he couldn't wait any longer.

If we do lose you won't hear our QB crying in the papers about how we didn't get beat.

Nah, if we lose I'll buy the rest of you losers a beer in Crapsville. xnodx

Actually Umass didn't play that bad, they just need a little more speed, especially at LB.

Any of the several UNI/UNH game threads. Wasn't my game but it was fun throwing gas on the fire.

I don't recall anything from UNH posters that didn't give UNI credit for making the plays to win the game. But I may have missed some.

We did however stand up for our guys when we were told they didn't belong or the refs kept them in the game.xnonono2x

I saw quite a bit of Liam Coen style "we beat ourselves" stuff, but like I said, I was just there to add fuel to the fire. Quite a bit of "the defense blew it" which I thought was BS since nobody but UD, YSU, and, I think, Iowa State held them under 30 all year. YSU was actually up 13-0 in the 4th quarter. Sounded from the threads ike there was bad juju between the teams and fans from past meetings.

:D It's you guys fault, CAA fans, especially UD ones, will absolutely steamroll a fellow if he doesn't get up and smack back. I'm just trying to survive in a hostile environment, hell, SIU gets so little respect this year that no one is even throwing smack their way. I am a lone beacon in an ocean of darkness.

Not anymore. SIU has got the attention of the CAA. For the record, great win over ZooMass! xthumbsupx
