That last turnover was a GREAT athletic play by UD DE Marcorrelle.. he knocked the ball out of Sander's hand and then he made the recovery. That was a defensive play MADE by UD, not a bad play by UNI.

Very questionable playcalling for UNI in this one. In two drives where UNI predominantly ran the ball, both drives end in TDs. Lewis was gashing UD left and right. We've got a line well over 300 pounds, so what do we do? Get cute and pass?! Sure enough, sack after sack after fumble after fumble. And those two turnovers were the difference. UNI clearly should have taken more of the approach they did at Western Illinois, and run it at least 4 out of every 5 plays of the game. I GUARANTEE UNI would have won that had they gone to that game plan instead. Far be it of me to question coach Farley's game plan, but to me, at least both on paper, and watching the game, I don't understand why they didn't run it at least 3 times as much as they did.xnonono2x

The key play in some sense was Cuff's determined catch and run for a 1st down to keep that last drive by UD going. He hurdled a UNI defender and was not going to be denied and just made the 1st down. That shows the kind of player he is. I was also very impressed by many of the UNI players, very fast, athletic and intense. Very good game!!

Delaware won Blizzard Bowl Part Deux. Congrats. Flacco is a great quarterback. I think Sanders is just as good and is probably better because he is more mobile, but unfortunately, HIS fumble(s) in two postseason games (National Title Game and this one) cost us the game in some sort of a way in the long run.
He's a great guy and its just hard to swallow that the team of seniors goes out with the loss. I'm sure knowing Eric he feels he let the team down because he is that kinda player. We shut down Cuff for 3 quarters, and our D was just arm-tackling on Flacco on blitzes and he got away and made the plays.

I was totally impressed with Lewis and the UNI safety but there is no way Sanders is anywhere near the QB that Flacco is and the NFL draft will prove this.

Sanders has real problems with his throwing mechanics and this is part of the reason he overthrows wide open receivers. Sanders has at best average arm strength yet he throws off of his back leg way too often. Sanders also drops his arm when he throws instead off holding it about shoulder heighth. IF his arm mechanics were better Marcarelle would have never been able to strip the ball from his hand in the game changing turnover. There are much better QB's in the FCS than Sanders. In my view he is not even the best offensive player on UNI. Lewis deserves that honor. He is a real player.

Pretty easy to look at the stats and find an explanation for this one. 3 turnovers for UNI, none for Delaware. Otherwise looks to have been a very evenly played game.

I'm guessing UNI fans will spend the entire off season lamenting the 55 yard fumble return for a TD in the first half. That kind of thing is a game-changer.

I think it's likely that Flacco is more of an NFL prospect but the two QBs were very comparable in terms of actual production today; with Sanders having a slightly higher QB rating while hitting a higher percentage of his passes (68 to 55). I don't think Delaware won because it had a better quarterback. I think it won because it was +3 in the giveaway takeaway stat.

Maybe I'll get a chance to see the game and maybe that'll change my mind. But it's real hard to win a game between two pretty evenly matched teams with a -3 in that stat...especially when one is a defensive score.

It's not a matter of complaining. It's just the way it is. Whenever it's your team turning the ball over it's mistakes and when it's your team getting the turnovers it's forceing turnovers. But the way it is is that if two relatively evenly matched teams are playing and one team is -3 in that area that team's probably not going to win.

The difference, IMHO, is that Sanders hit wide open recievers all day, while Flacco had to thread the needle on many of his throws. Sanders is accurate, but has less than an impressive arm. I see why NFL scouts have ignored him to date.

I agree JSO but your original post, which I quoted, referred to Johnson's fumble return. My post simply stated how hypocritical that complaint would be in light of how UNI beat UNH in 2005.

I think we all agree that turnovers are key in winning any game between very good and evenly matched teams. The question always is, are the turnovers the result of great plays by the defense or just dumb luck to the recipient of the turnover. I have seen this argued on both sides by the same poster on numerous occasions on this board.

IN the end turnovers are the result of either a:

1. dumb Offensive mistake or
2. A great defensive play

I would argue that both contribute to a win or loss. IMHO the Sanders strip was the result of both.

I think most Hen fans are 50-50 on this game - The New Hampshire result gives us hope
We know that if we bring our A game, we feel that we can take a shootout
(remember Navy)
if not, we know our season will be over, our D has dissapointed us this year and yes injuries have played a role, but having said that, we know they do have some playmakers (#4, #11, #9, and we need #99 to show up big time) this group is very capable of making big plays, and they will need too if we think were going to win
Flacco and Cuff - they give us alot of hope, you'll be hard pressed to down both of them
Dropped balls - yes, weve had too many - Flacco doesnt care about breaking receviers fingers,
will be very interesting to see Flacco in the Barndome - I jsut hope he's under control and keeps the ball down (he's a very calm, cool and collected type though)

True, it wasn't as bad as 39-17.

But, after they made adjustments, they did outplay UNI. Someone else saw it from a similar view; from the UNI paper:

"So Sanders trudged off the field with his eyes full of tears. This glorious unbeaten, top-ranked season was abruptly halted by a plucky bunch of Blue Hens who were rattled early in falling behind 10-0 but outplayed the Panthers the rest of the way.

Delaware fended off the Dome's fan-made noise with poise, much of it from a 6-foot-6 NFL prospect at quarterback. Flacco spent the first couple of possessions just trying to communicate with his teammates, let alone move the chains. From then on, however, he was the best player on the field.

``At the first frickin' snap I get, the center can't hear me,'' Flacco said. ``The right tackle said he could hear me, but my center couldn't hear a word. I must have said ``Go!'' five times and he was just still.

``The atmosphere was insane. It was as much fun as I've had all year to play somewhere.''

Yesterday was the third time I've seen Flacco play and I think I'm more impressed with him every time!

Flacco was easily the best offensive player on the field yesterday. Cuff is good but there are several backs in the SoCon who are his equal- Richardson, Cooper, Lewis, Johnson (Foster's in a class of his own)- but Flacco is a special talent. UD is a big time threat to win and are never out of a game as long as he is in the line up.

Kudos to UNI for a great season, but turnovers killed you and you had no answer for Flacco.

Wow I was very very impressed with Delaware. Their coaching staff made better adjustments than ours did. Flacco is simply amazing. As a former quarterback I love watching quarterback play and there is nothing that tells me he won't be playing on Sundays. If he learns a little bit of touch he is going to be a stud. There were a few passes that with any normal quarterback UNI would have picked those off, but Flacco throws the ball so hard that they just flew by the defenders.

All in all UNI had a great year and have some great players coming back. And look forward to next year, but congrats to Delaware you were the better team yesterday. Good luck, but as a UNI fan I almost hate to do it but I have to cheer for the only Gateway team left!
