McNeese has not assigned #71, but McNeese does actually have a rodeo team! For the second year in a row, the men's team was reserve champion at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), while the Cowgirls placed 6th. Last year, the Cowboys had the all-around Cowboy at the CNFR. McNeese is the only college in Louisiana with a rodeo team. McNeese is named after John McNeese, originally from New York, a Union Army veteran, and a progressive educator in SW Louisiana, who led a cattle drive through Louisiana to the Sabine River.
