The "money game" apparently needs to stay just that in too many cases when FCS threatens to upset or even play close to the big boys. I offer 2 examples of many: In 2018 Samford played FSU and put a scare into them, but eventually lost our lead with 4:03 left in the game. FSU was up by 3 when Duck was intercepted, and the Seminole player returned it for the TD. Scroll over to the 4th quarter 2:31 mark and just listen to even the ACC guys talk about what an obvious block in the back that was not called with an official standing right there. I'm not saying this cost us the game, but I guess the official wanted Florida State to have a better point spread.

The other game was actually in 2004 when Furman visited Pitt. I was watching it on TV and pulling for the upset. I can't recall specifically what I questioned, but I was convinced that those officials absolutely cheated Furman out of a win.

It was just prior to the 1AA split - but the W&M game at Virginia Tech in 1978 was a blatant steal. I found this mention attached below of the game among the top heart stopping finishes in college football - this game ranked 35th - though the fact the pass was clearly incomplete and the refs incompetence are not mentioned.
Tech needed this win to pick up an ABC televised slot against Clemson the following weekend. So there were financial stakes involved as well.
The RTD paper labeled this game “The Great Lane Robbery” the following morning with a picture of the ball sailing through the receivers hands. A blatant steal.

I have no doubt that this occurs. I've seen it here and there. When you have "judgment" calls it is probably inevitable.
However, having said that I can also say that we have benefited, or rather, not been damaged because of very good officiating when playing a couple FBS teams.
Our recent wins against both South Carolina and GaTech were sealed by very good officiating. Both opponents would have scored and went ahead with very little time remaining if not for accurate calls by the officiating crews.
SC scored on a bomb very late, but it was called back due to a receiver false start/ movement. Very clear in the replay that he was not set and moved.
GaTech would have scored on a run, I think with under a minute to play, but the GaTech coach was on the field calling a TO. Many of our players actually held up seeing one on the ref acknowledge the coaches request. But the play ran and they scored. Thankfully it was called back.
They also lost time with a clock run off. All the calls were correct.
Both could have been easily waved off, but were not.

Pittsburgh’s TE’s kept chop blocking (not cut blocking) and clipping FU’s All SoCon LB’s and injured 1 of them - broke Mike Killian’s fibula late in the 3rd quarter - in a game the 8-3 Fiesta Bowl bound Panthers won w/a FG in OT. The Refs were alerted to this ongoing, repetitive, dirty play and chose to ignore it.
Odd topic for a fan of the Team recently on the receiving end of “Graham’s Glorious Gift” to post, but FUBeAR does appreciate you mentioning another time the Paladins were screwed out of an important victory…

Oh boy, dragging up bad memories of the 2010 NDSU@EWU playoff game. I don't really blame the on field refs for the live calls, but the PAC official running the replay review was either incompetent or biased. Ruled EWU can catch a pass on the bounce and that the ground can cause NDSU to fumble. Both were absolutely game changing and I 100% believe NDSU wins that game if either had been ruled correctly.

The penalty on NDSU was pretty bad in that game as well but the thread is about getting screwed in FCS/FBS games I think. For the most part, the games that NDSU has played against FBS teams has been pretty good. But I still remember exactly where I was at and how many F bombs I dropped during the EWU game.

Dig up dead horse to beat it again and again. That FIRST HALF call that evidently in some folks' opinion cost Furman the game, Playoff Win, National Championship, and an invitation to join the SEC.

Sure … the clearly game-changing debacle that gifted your Team with a SoCon Championship…that happened just a few months ago should be long-forgotten (AKA ‘swept under the rug) - but you remember a 3rd quarter injury on a cheap/dirty block that should have been a called penalty that happened almost 20 years ago as ‘absolutely cheating Furman out of a win.’
That makes perfect sense…here…

What makes no sense is constantly posting videos, and pics about this FIRST HALF call ad nauseum. I have constantly agreed that the FIRST HALF call was horrible, but there is NO WAY to say definitively that it even cost Furman the game. Momentum aside, the half-time score was 20-17. I thought overcoming adversity was part of a team's football life lesson. I think I am through with any more discussion about this and have no desire to have the last word. FUB, I highly respect your knowledge of football and your insights and hope we can always keep it civil. As for Furman/Samford, I just hope both schools this Fall will show the FCS World how good SoCon Football has become.

So, the consensus position of Samford Fans is that Furman / Furman Fans should just forget and never again mention the conference-acknowledged travesty of officiating we all witnessed on 10/1/22?
How that did or did not impact or should have or should not have impacted the outcome of the game, and thusly, also the SoCon Championship, Playoff Seeding / Bracketing / Outcomes is beyond anyone’s certainty of knowledge. You Samford peeps can say “Furman shouldn’t have let that cost them the game,” and Furman Fans can say, “That heinous call, the 20 minute delay, and the complete reversal of momentum was just too much for any Team to overcome.” And neither would be wrong, with certainty.
That said…FUBeAR ain’t never gonna forget the Alamo, the Maine, Pearl Harbor, 9/11, or “Graham’s Grand Larceny.”
And to be chastened to do so by someone who just referenced remembering a far, far, far less egregious and less impactful non-call that was detrimental to Furman that happened nearly a quarter of a century ago is just really inconceivable. If Furman had been playing any Team other than Samford on 10/1/22, perhaps you wouldn’t find the referencing of that officiating fiasco quite so objectionable to your sensibilities.

Northern Iowa @ Iowa State, October 10, 1987. UNI's first game against Iowa State since 1950.
UNI was leading 38-21 with 10 minutes left in the 4th. Iowa State scored 18 unanswered points in 8 1/2 minutes with the assistance of 90+ yards in penalties called against UNI. UNI gets the ball back down by 1 with 1:23 left on the clock and quickly moves down field. With time running down UNI's TE turns to receive a pass with his feet on the extra point spot. A defender drills him before the ball arrives and the ball flies untouched through the space he just occupied. No flag. Time runs out, UNI loses 39-38.

YES. In 2020 CUSA refs SCREWED the Mocs out of a G5 Scalp. The entire game was questionable, but go to 1:59:45 on the link below to watch the officials negate a 103 yard KO return with a phantom fair catch signal call.

THIS is definitely what I'm talking about. Incredible! That upback did NOT signal fair catch. Looked to me like he raised one hand signaling to his teammate.

2005 EKU @ Vanderbilt:
EKU QB Josh Greco *thoroughly* outplayed a Vandy QB by the name of Jay Cutler. EKU dominated nearly every statistical category, but Vanderbilt "won" 19-7.
EKU had a touchdown that was already on the scoreboard taken off when a pass was ruled incomplete like a minute after it happened (no replay back then). The receiver was down on the ground possessing the ball and a Vanderbilt player hit him jarring it loose after the play was legitimately over.
Vandy got one of their touchdowns with the aid of the worst phantom pass interference call I've ever seen. Incidentally, the official who made the terrible call injured his leg badly later in the game and had to be carted off the field.
It was my senior year as a student at EKU, and we made the trip to Nashville for the game. It was a rainy day, and about 25% of the 16,000 in attendance were EKU fans. One other memory is that on the way back to Richmond we stopped in Bowling Green (where WKU is located) for dinner, and while we were in BG for maybe and hour had *three* different EKU alums stop us and talk to us after seeing all of our apparel.

This was absolutely hideous. Maybe the worst call I have ever seen in a football game ever. It should be criminally investigated.

Gosh - y’all know FUBeAR hates to get cross-wise with his good friends MilkTruck & POD, but…whether or not the correct call was made in this Chatt @ WKU game, there is at least some solid evidence for the basis of the call that was made. It’s clear to see in the pics below that the the other fairly deep (10 yard line - between the hashes - moving back deeper and toward the direction of the ball) Moc, #9, was waving his left hand in the air as the ball is coming down toward the other, deeper Moc. No way to know what he was signaling by this waving, but the Defenders can’t know that either. Judgement call by the Official(s), but clearly some legitimate evidence for the basis of the call that was made. Maybe wrong, but it ain’t that bad - surely nothing that would lead to a long-time Official being terminated, as righteously occurred due to another (albeit slightly off-topic) example of a heinous miscarriage of officiating justice in this thread…

Ok. I watched that replay a bunch of times and did not see the other guy wave his arm. Still a ****ty call but not as bad as it looked at first glance. I was focused, as were the replays, on the guy fielding the kick.

Still shots don't always tell the complete story.
Acording to Section 8 ARTICLE 2.of the NCAA Rules Manual
A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.
The player in question was obviously signaling to his teammate to make the catch and to take it to the house. He did not wave from side to side and he did not do it more than once.
I was taught that officials must make judgement calls on grey areas, and the first rule to apply to that judgement is "Was an advantage gained or lost by the action?" So, did Team A stop pursuing the the return man? Nope. No Advantage.
What is OBVIOUS in this one is that team B fully intended to return the kick, If was obvious to everyone on the field that day, every one in the stands, everyone watching on TV, and 6 of the 7 officials on the field.

So…as FUBeAR said…judgement call with some basis - #9’s waving his left arm - for the call that was made.
Certainly could be a bad call, but not a contrived conspiracy that took 20 minutes for the Head Referee to create (pull from his rectal region) from whole cloth, which in doing so, violated multiple rules associated with the use of replay and then the ridiculous ruling itself, with clearly and absolutely no basis in fact, violated multiple rules of the game of Football. That, my TrainBirdNativeAmericanShoe, is a BAD call!!!!
