No, just for Yale football. The Bowl is really used just 5 days a year.

Perhaps the reason for the extra space between the playing field and the stands is because back in 1914 when the Bowl was built, the playing field was much wider.

Saturday's Game was the fifth straight 50,000+ crowd for Yale/Harvard at the Bowl.

Saturday's crowd of 57,248 was the largest at the Bowl since 1989 (Yale vs. Harvard 59,000).

I remember when the Giants used the Yale Bowl for their home one season. It was the year they left Yankee Stadium and the Meadowlands was being built. I don't recall the year (early 70's), too lazy to do a Google search.

I don't think so. The space doesn't appear to be any larger than what is at Harvard Stadium, which opened in 1903 and originally had a track around the field.

In 1881, the field was reduced in size to its modern dimensions of 120 by 53 1/3 yards (109.7 by 48.8 meters).

I suspect the distance had more to do safety concerns. In 1914, football was still a harshly criticized game. In fact, during this time, football had been abandoned by most west coast schools in favor of rugby. Concrete stands close to the field presented a real and percieved danger to players.

The Giants also played one season at Shea Stadium before heading to the Meadowlands.

I love the fact that regardless if the game is played at the Yale Bowl or Harvard Stadium, the "H" and the "Y" logo is always placed on the 50 yard line.

To be a bowl, there is going to be space between the field. Most "bowls" today are more a rectangle than a true bowl.
