You are looking at the AP Poll.

One week after App State beat Michigan the AP Poll decided that they will accept votes for teams in the Championship Subdivision. Apparently one of the voters voted for UNI. App State had a few votes in week 3 and then fell out of the poll.

It happens.
In 1983, after winning the I-AA title I vaguely remember SIU being ranked #20 nationally.

I'm suprised we got votes now. If anything it would be after Iowa State. Cool thing though.

If we had gone undefeated we would actually be ranked... but unfortunately that didnt happen

How? My guess is one sportswriter decided to toss the FCS a bone and give the #1 team a vote (probably at #25 on his or her ballot).

Does it mean anything in the big picture? absolutely not, but it was fun to see.

It's all because of the "App State rule" haha ;)

I'm not too surprised either, with all of the upsets in FBS these days UNI why not give some credit to an undefeated program. Not that its saying much but I'd bet we could hold our own in the BIG 10 this year ;)
