HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Shamir McDaniel scored 15 of his 18
points in the second half as Sam Houston State upset Texas Tech
56-54 on Wednesday night.
DeLuis Ramirez hit two driving layups in the final 1:35 to help
Sam Houston preserve the win. His second with 58 seconds left gave
Sam Houston a 53-49 lead. McDaniel's 3-point play with 43 seconds
remaining put the Bearkats up 56-51.
The Bearkats improved to 2-0 and are 2-3 against the Red
Raiders.
Tech (1-1) hit only 15 of 28 free throws and missed four crucial
ones the final five minutes. John Roberson missed 2-of-3 from the
line with 35 seconds to play. Roberson and Charlie Burgess missed
3-point attempts in the last 15 seconds.
Martin Zeno came alive in the second half, scoring 12 of his 16
points after hitting only 1-of-6 shots the first half.
Trailing 34-28 barely 31/2 minutes into the second half, Zeno
scored 11 of his team's next 13 points to gain a 41-39 lead with
8:17 to play.
But Sam Houston controlled the rebounding with a 44-32 advantage
for the game and led by as many as four the final two minutes.
Tech started slowly, missing four of its first five shots from
the field while committing three turnovers. The Red Raiders only
trailed 6-4 after five minutes. The Red Raiders then went on a 12-2
run to lead 16-8.
Sam Houston answered with its own 13-3 streak to take a 21-19
lead with 2:16 to play in the first half.
Ryan Bright then made two straight improbable driving, twisting
layups and Sam Houston led 25-20 with 36 seconds left in the half.
Tech closed it to 25-23 at halftime.
The Red Raiders hit only 9 of 23 from the field in the first
half and were outrebounded 27-13.

A very strong win by the Kats at home to extend one of the longest home out of conference streaks in the country...

One down -- we still have tough challenges ahead in Central Florida, UC-Irvine and Fresno State...
