View Full Version : Unique mascots in college sports

Wofford has a fairly unique mascot in the Terriers, but Boston University, Saint Francis (NY), and maybe a few other lower-division schools share this mascot with us. Here are a few truly unique mascots from teams Wofford has faced in sports somewhere in their past:

Rollins Tars
Eckerd Tritons
North Texas Mean Green (not sure if Wofford's played them in anything, but I know of this one-comes from their most famous alumnus Mean Joe Greene;its teams were formally known as the Eagles)
Presbyterian Blue Hose
I would also say that Furman Paladins is unique, too.

Western Illinois University Fighting Leathernecks

"A "leatherneck" is a nickname applied to the members of the United States Marine Corps. Ray Hanson, an early coach and athletic director at Western, served in World War I and World War II as a Marine. The school received permission to use the name and bulldog mascot from the Marine Corps and is the only non-service academy allowed to officially adopt a nickname and mascot also used by a branch of the United States armed forces."

http://www.footballfridaynight.com/gahelmetproject/graphics/johnsonsav2.gif

My wife graduated from that school!!!!

In Cairo, GA the High school name is the Syrup Makers

Cairo Syrupmakers (GA) -- One story says this mascot was inspired during a rainy football game, when the owner of a local syrup plant helped out the home team by giving the players ponchos that had "Roddenbury Syrup" written across them. Another story says a newspaper reporter referred to the Tigers as "the syrupmakers from Cairo" in a game story, probably because there was a syrup plant in Cairo at the time. The mascot is depicted as a syrup pitcher. The term is often shortened to "Maids" for the girls or "Makers" for the boys.

The Cats
November 15th, 2007, 12:31 AM
What is a Catamount?
Western Carolina's moniker since 1933

- Western Carolina University's unique mascot and nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Catamounts play on the road ... "What exactly is a Catamount?"

Webster's Dictionary defines "catamount" as "any of various wild cats such as a cougar or lynx." Cats of the catamount variety, including the bobcat, have roamed the southern Appalachian Mountains, where Western Carolina University is located, for years.

The nickname evolved from a contest that was held on the Cullowhee campus in 1933. At the time, the school was called "Western Carolina Teachers College" and its teams were known as "the Teachers."

Everyone on campus was invited to participate in the naming of the teams. The usual names were suggested -- Bears, Indians, Panthers. However, the college wanted an unusual name, a name that few others had and that everyone would not copy.

The contest came down to Mountain Boomers, a small ground squirrel that scampers about the woods and is extremely difficult to catch, and Catamounts. The latter was the favorite of Head Football Coach C.C. Poindexter and was the nickname chosen. Poindexter wanted his players to be Catamounts with "fierce spirit, savage attacks, and lightning quick moves."

Western Carolina University is the only one of two NCAA schools playing under the Catamount moniker. Western is the only football-playing school in the nation using the nickname "Catamounts," with the University of Vermont being the only other school using that nickname.

technically, I don't think it is sunLIGHT that causes it. If I recall, the aurora is generated by charged particles interacting with other particles in the atmosphere (and the properties of the earth's magnetic field has something to do with it).

Those charged particles are part of the "solar wind", so they do come from the sun. But I don't know if they qualify as "light" in and of themselves.

But regardless, it is a beautiful spectacle to behold, and I wish to one day get to see them.

A highschool in Alabama is nick named the Ragland Purple Devils.

The name is not that funny but the story behind it is.

Legend has it that one dark chilly night, which is strange for Alabama, the football team encountered what they believed to be a dead armadillo in their fieldhouse. Poor thing was frozen to death or so they assumed because of it's deep purple color. Well come to find out the thing was alive and didn't take too kindly to being awoken. The story goes that the thing went ballistic and started acting all crazy, like it was possessed by a demon, hence the name, Purple Devil.

Elon was the Fightin' Christians until the school decided to change in 2001 because of too much bad publicity when they moved to D-1 and started playing on a national Level.
The school is affiliated with United Church of Christ ( i think ???). In the early 1900's they always played againist Guilford College, a Quaker School. The local papers always said it was the Christians vs. the Quakers. And the name Christians stuck and became "Fightin' Christians".

The name change makes sense to me.
"Fightin' Christians" sounds like the equivalent of some team calling themselves the Jihadists. In that sense, "Crusaders" falls into the same category.

But anyway.

We had the Northern Colorado Fightin' Whites.

It was an intramural team that was protesting a local high school being called the Reds. Funny anecdote: The high school they were protesting was a big rival of mine in baseball, so I've always said they should change their mascot from a Native American to a hammer and sickle.:D xthumbsupx

A hoya is some sort of a shortened version of a latin phrase. The students would yell this phrase of encouragement in latin, and Hoya is the abbreviation of this I believe.

The phrase is "Hoya Saxa," which literally translates as "What rocks"

Supposedly it's a reference to the stone wall that was on campus near where I believe the baseball team played. After a big win, a student (no doubt thinking he was being clever ;) ) used the Latin phrase to describe the team, kind of like "Stonewall" Jackson. Somewhere along the line, the name got shortened to "Hoya" and became the official nickname.

So literally, a Hoya is a "What the"

Yes, I took the Georgetown tour when looking at colleges xreadx

Like we haven't heard that one a million times before...

It never gets old because it's just strange.

At most schools when it comes to mascots and there is a feminine animal with a unique name (think "Rams" as the male and in reality "Ewes" is the feminine)...the SCHOOL MASCOT NAMES are "Rams" for men and "Lady Rams" for the women's teams.

The Delaware situation would be as if the mens teams were the "Ewes" and the womens teams the "Lady Ewes". It's redundant.

Buffalo calls their women's teams the Bulls - "Lady Bulls" would be too disturbing. I don't much care for adding 'Lady' to a nickname, but I can see why the Yale women wouldn't want to just be called Bulldogs

I wish Marist would call their women Vixens instead of Lady Red Foxes.
