Dover, Del. (Feb. 24, 2023) --- Hartford overcame four and three run deficits in a doubleheader softball sweep of Delaware State today. The Hawks trailed 4-0 before coming back to defeat the Hornets 7-6 in game one, and rallied from a 4-1 deficit to post a 6-4 victory in game two. Delaware State opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Britney Phally singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a bunt single by Destiny Beckham. After Beckham stole second, Uxua Lopez reached base on a Hartford error, with Phally scoring on the play and Beckham advancing to third. Beckham scored on a bases loaded walk to Ella Falcetti to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Delaware State opened up a 3-0 advantage when Lopez also scored on a bases loaded walk, and Joie Raibourn scored the fourth run of the inning on a ground out by Emma Glawson. Hartford answered with six runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead. Mara Sczenienski singled in two runs in the inning to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead. Hartford added a run in the sixth to lead 7-4. Delaware State scored an unearned run in the bottom sixth to pull to with two again. The Hornets still trailed 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Beckham singled to lead off the Delaware State seventh and later scored on a two-out error to cut the Hawks lead to 7-6. The Hornets had two runners on base when Hartford recorded the final out of the game. Beckham was two-for-four with two stolen bases, while Phally also had two hits in four at bats in the opener.
