Nolan Ryan was probably the hardest thrower 50 years ago. He wasn't the best pitcher of the era. You had Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver to name a few. Pitching speed was measured differently to. They would measure slightly fast on today's guns.

Yes but today you have mop up bull pen pitchers throwing 96 97
The average fastball keeps creeping up in velocity over the years and seems like all hard throwing pitchers have had surgery

Researchers were flabbergasted by Babe Ruth’s performance when they studied it in detail. The great Yankee slugger threw the ball at speeds of up to 100 mph, which was unheard of for his time.

The number of major league pitches clocked at 100 mph and faster more than tripled over three years, from 1,056 in 2019 to 3,348 last year. The rate continues to go up this season, as shown by this recent spike that includes the prorated total for ’23:

Here is an example of dumb, last night in the Twins game, Cleveland had a guy on first and one of their players hits a pop-up to the infield, infield fly rule, Correa lets the pop-up drop and gets a force out at second. The problem is, the guy that hit the pop up is Cleveland's leading base stealer, so what does he do, he steals second and scores on a single to center field. I am scratching my head like WTF did the Twins just do? In a previous game against the Rangers in extra innings, Twins have the guy on second, the batter hits a foul ball that is caught by the first basemen and for some unknown reason, Crazy Joe Gallo gets caught off of second base for a double play. Maybe some of the worst base running I have ever seen.

Was at "The Bank" today to see firsthand how one can go from extreme high to low in a short period of time. The exhilaration of seeing Harper go yard for his 300th HR that catapulted the Phillies into the lead in the bottom of the 8th, only to see the lead be frittered away by bullpen implosion in the 9th. Such is the game of baseball. No game clock, always gotta shot to comeback. But seeing Harper continually come through in the clutch with huge hits (many homers) is jaw dropping. The Bank was rocking and demanded a curtain call, which Harper exuberantly gave. The bullpen's failure to hold was gut wrenching. I don't see the loss as devastating as this team seems to put such things behind them and they did take a 9 game homestead 7-2. Big series coming up away at Milwaukee and San Diego. Despite loss, the Harper homer will long be remembered as one of my sports attendance highlights in my 71 years.

I had the fortune to witness Dick Allen hit an amazing shot over the ROOF of the centerfield seats at Connie Mack back in the late 60's. Unfortunately, no technical means of measurement at the time, and, it was a night game. The ball was a line drive and was still going up as it went into the night sky over the roof, which was 450' from home plate and 40' high!

The “Schwarberian” surpassed Jimmy Rollins tonight with his 10th lead off homer. I must admit he frustrates me a lot with all the K’s, as well as a sub-Mendoza Line average, but one cannot ignore his production. The HRs and RBIs speak for themselves, but he belongs strictly as DH. I hold my breath whenever he is in left and a ball heads in that direction.

Phils have picked a bad time to ride the struggle bus. Losing last night after rallying back to tie it in the 9th seemed to carry over to tonight. As it is, their margin for error remains razor thin. They're banking on lightning striking two years in a row. I'm not very confident....

Better to have the 'lull', now, than in the first week of October. The Phils are a better team than what they fielded last year. Turner is a massive upgrade, and Bohm and Stott have now shown themselves to be serious major leaguers. The only 'everyday' player I am concerned about is JT. Seems very 'off'. Not sure if it is timing or mechanics, but it is concerning. Hopefully, Thompson knows how to handle the starters the last three weeks here, so they are ready to go in October. I think Sanchez and Suarez will be in the bullpen for long work if necessary.

I think I understand the premise, but what do those letters stand for? I agree that with the recent philosophical change to taking the starter out after 5/6 innings rather than have a tired arm face the lineup for the third time appears to make sense, it has certainly changed the 'metrics' on how one evaluates the 'greatness' of a starting pitcher. I look at Zack Wheeler, who has really become a strong starter, and would think he would be a candidate; yet, he's 33 years old and only has 86 or so wins. A 15 win season seems to be the equivalent of the .300 hitter nowadays, and even at that rate Wheeler would have to pitch until he's 40...and winning consistently. I think back to baseball history when guys like Grover Alexander threw two compete games on the same day! It's all about protecting the owners' investments in the arms, and even with today's "pampering", guys are still going down on the IL. I remember Marichal and Spahn one time hooked up in a game that went 15 or so innings with neither coming out. It's a different world.

Harper hit a ball 453' into the second row of he second deck in right center field...into the wind!!! Having concerns about Turner, again. He's made an inordinate number of errors this year on what I would call mundane plays. Bad positioning, lackadaiscal throwing to first...He makes sensational plays, but boots a lot of routine grounders. I'd sit him a couple days and play Sosa at short, who is an excellent glove anyway. Thompson needs to rest a few guys as soon as the Phils clinch home field in WC round.

I bought tickets (well, technically in one case my brother bought tickets) to the following postseason games already:
*Orioles WC Series Game 3 (Thu 10/5)
*Phillies WC Series Game 3 (Thu 10/5)
*Orioles ALDS Game 5 (Fri 10/13)
*Orioles ALCS Game 2 (most likely Mon 10/16)
Only one of the first two Orioles games listed might be played. (If the Orioles are in the Wild-Card Series, they won't host a third ALDS game. If the Orioles win the AL East and advance directly to the ALDS, they won't play in the Wild-Card Series.)
If the Phillies and Orioles both play on Thursday 10/5 and the games aren't sufficiently staggered (i.e. one in the early afternoon, one at night), I'll sell my ticket for one of the two games.

It was also breaks their streak of 13 straight home losses in the playoffs, which dates back to game 2 of the 2002 ALCS.

Phillies grab opener beating Strider! Amazing double play started by Turner squelched any comeback attempt, Harper shoots another laser, and Thompson created a virtual bullpen game. With tomorrow off, Phil’s are in good position with Wheeler and Nola on the bump next two games.

Get ready for the Dodgers to go nuts this offseason throwing money at starting pitchers after their starters' implosions in the first 2 games of the ALDS against the Diamondbacks.
To think about the kind of money they would've thrown at Ohtani had he not messed up his arm... it would've been bananas.

The Braves were choking again big time but somehow came back to win that game last night
Harper doesn’t know how good Micheal Harris is and Harris makes a circus catch at the wall and Harper gets doubled off after he had already rounded second…
I think the Phillies are still The favorite though, the fans will rock the house
Thank goodness a segment of our society still knows how good the game of baseball is

Phillies are amazing. This team was built for the post-season. Harper is one of those few who does not blink when the big lights go on. His post game interview was downright emotional as he spoke about why he wanted to play in Philly. Series with the snakes can be closer than many think, but I see the Phils winning in five or six.

they have two very solid righty starting pitchers in Kelly and Gallen
if Pfadt is on he’s really good to but often he’s not
I agree with your prediction

Strahm was a heckuva signing by Dombrowski. He really saved the Phillies' bacon early in the season when Suarez was out injured, and now effective in the bullpen.

I feel pretty good about tonight's game. Suarez has been very consistent in his outings since his return to the lineup in mid-summer. The only thing to worry about is whether they will be subjected to a 'monster Pfaadt' that gasses them. Can't believe the Phils will be shut down two nights in a row in The Bank. This game is literally, "in the Bank!" Go Phillies!!

Pfaadt has certainly found his way late season but he’s still vulnerable to giving up the long ball.. Phillies fans need to be heard like it was Burt Hooten on the mound
