Baltimore, Md. (Jan. 30. 2023) ----The Delaware State men's basketball team has extended its win streak to three with a 71-66 victory at Coppin State this evening. A week after snapping a 15-game slide, the Hornets have rode the momentum to post their longest win streak since consecutive victories over North Carolina A&T, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and Morgan State during the 2016-17 season. Delaware State has also won back-to-back road game for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. Junior guard Martaz Robinson continued his recent hot string, topping four double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 20 points on eight-for-17 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers. Robinson also led Delaware State with 10 rebounds to record his first collegiate "double-double," and the Hornets' second this season. Ray Somerville had 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Norfolk State on Jan. 9. Robinson has scored 118 points in the last seven games (16.9 ppg) to raise his season average to 10.4. Khyrie Staten came off the bench to add 13 points, including a mid-court shot to beat the first half buzzer, cutting Coppin State's lead to one (32-31) at the break. Brandon Stone and Cameron Stitt scored 10 points each as reserves for the Hornets. Stitt was four-for-seven from the field, including two three-pointers. Coppin State led by as many as nine in the first half before a three-pointer by Stone and Staten's mid-court shot shifted momentum to the Hornets. There were three lead changes and five ties in the second half. Delaware State took the lead for good, 53-51, after two free throws by Corey Perkins (9 points, 4 assists) at the 8:42 mark of the second half. The Hornets held their biggest lead, 65-56, on a Robinson free throw with 3:53 remaining in the game. Delaware State held a solid edge in rebounding 47-30 and sealed the win with 13-for-15 shooting at the free line in the second half (86.7%). The Hornets return to action on Saturday (Feb. 4) against Morgan State in the Michael B. Jordan-led HBCU Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., the second meeting between the long-time rivals in eight days. Delaware State, playing at home, defeated the Bears 64-62 on a basket by Robinson with 2.4 seconds left to play last Saturday.
