A source close to the Notre Dame athletic department has confirmed that ND will become a member of the ‘Sun Belt’ Conference, effective September of ‘08. Notre Dame AD Kevin White stated that he hoped the move would bring a greater competitive balance to ND football. In a prepared statement White said.. “We feel that our talent level is now very comparable to that of other ‘Sun Belt’ members like North Texas St, Florida International, Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic.” White continued to say that “our fans demand wins and it doesn’t matter over who, a win over Florida International is a good as one over Michigan to our fan base.” White also said that despite that fact the Notre Dame was moving down to a lower level of competition, he fully expected that ND would continue to receive very favorable treatment by the BCS bowl committee. “Hey were ARE Notre Dame”, White said, “we always got special treatment in the past and I fully expect that the special consideration will continue as we move forward in the Sun Belt conference. When asked about the loss of long time rivals like USC, Michigan and Navy, White replied..“it’s time to move on, we look forward to establishing new and long term rivalries with Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas St and Troy in addition to the previously mentioned Sun Belt schools. We really do feel that this move gives us the best opportunity to return our glory days”. White also added that ND has already scheduled a series of out of conference games vs similar talent level FBS and FCS competition. In ’08, in addition to the grueling Sun Belt competition, ND will play Army, Idaho, Columbia and Fordham all at home. White added “we really wanted to beef up our home schedule and increase our chances to reach the BCS title and game all those schools were willing to play at South Bend with no return game”. As a result, Notre Dame will have eight home games next year.

When asked to comment on the move, a NBC spokesperson stated, “ Hey we love the move, Notre Dame fans and viewers want wins and win over Florida International is much better than a loss to Navy."

Nice!

Who says they can beat Florida International!! Navy had a 43-game losing streak, FIU's is only about 20 games.

I was thinking the MAC West for the Golden Domers. A perfect fit geographically, and maybe they can win a few against teams like Temple & Kent State. MAYBE, i cant stress this enough.

If it weren't for the date I am expecting to seeAPRIL FOOLSsprawled accross my screen.

Could someone please post the link so we can read the actual story? Also, is the Sun Belt part of the Bowl Coalition, so that ND would still be eligible for the FICTIONAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP?

Now for some real fun, I would have rather seen "Notre Dame to the Gateway". They would then have a rivalry game with Indiana State and still only win one game.

I couldn't be happier for the Domers...They screwed Ty Willingham royally and deserve every stinking loss they get. Being a religious school, they should know that God works in strange ways....

xlolx My first thought on the Fordham-Notre Dame game was that it'll lead to even more criticism of the Patriot League's weak out of conference schedule...xlolx xlolx xlolx

Right! Is Notre Dame even a "counter"??? Better that Fordham play Savannah State or La Salle!!

When he was the Fordham coach, Frank Cavanaugh challenged Notre Dame to a game. Knute Rockne turned it down.

So that's where the relationship stands. Notre Dame chickened out.

I say put ND in the MAC. I'm watching CMU and WMU right now, and I'm realizing that two teams from that conference have lost to FCS teams (CMU and NIU, handily I might add). ND will fit right in with the likes of Toledo, Ball State, Akron, and Central Michigan.xrolleyesx

Notre Dame AD Kevin White reports that the Sun Belt Conference has rejected Notre Dame’s recent application for football membership. Sun Belt Commissioner, Wright Waters, apparently rejected the application Saturday night immediately after ND was thrashed by Air Force. Wright is quoted in the rejection letter as stating, “As much as we’d love to welcome Notre Dame’s basketball and women’s sports programs into our conference, we just can’t justify accepting a football program that may be the worst in the entire FBS. Wright further stated that “while the thought of sharing Notre Dame’s windfall NBC TV contract was very attractive, it was not nearly enough to off set the lack of quality in the current ND football program”. Wright apologized for the rejection and recommended that Notre Dame consider a move to FCS, but suggested that they avoid the FCS power leagues, such as the CAA and SoCon and consider membership in either the Patriot or Ivy Leagues, conferences that are a good fit both academically and athletically.
