Princess Anne, Md. (Jan. 14, 2023) --- Delaware State's bid to notch its first MEAC win of the season ended with a 68-66 loss to Maryland-Eastern at the Hychte Athletic Center today. The contest featured 18 lead changes and eight ties. The Hornets had the final possession with the Hawks leading by two after Nathaniel Pollard missed the second of two free throws, but came up empty. Maryland-Eastern Shore won for the sixth time in seven games to improve to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC. Delaware State dropped its 14th straight to fall to 1-15 and 0-3. The loss also overshadowed another stellar performance by Hornet guard Martz Robinson, who led all players with a career-high 24 points on six-for-12 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers on three attempts, and 10-of-11 on free throw attempts. He also topped the Hornets with eight rebounds. Raymond Somerville (3-3 FG; 4-4 FT) and Kyle Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds each for Delaware State. Zion Styles led four double-figure scorers for Maryland-Eastern Shore with 15 points. Donchevell Nugent added 13 points, while Pollard and Da'Shawn Phillip chipped in 10 points each for the Hawks. The Hornets led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but settled for a 32-31 lead at the break. UMES won the second half 37-34. Three-point shooting was a factor in the contest. Maryland-Eastern Shore connected on 13-of-28 three-point shots (46.4%), while Delaware State was three-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Hornets are also away for the next two games, beginning with a visit to North Carolina Central next Saturday (Jan. 21) in Durham, N.C.
