Hicks leads the Kats into Hammond for the second year in a row. I hope he is up to it this season.

Article on Brett Hicks stepping in at QB...
Hicks steps in again
Bearkats confident in backup quarterback’s ability to lead offense, win last two games
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor
Brett Hicks has been in this situation before: starting quarterback goes down with an injury and Hicks comes in to save the day.
He did it last season and had Sam Houston State a win away from a Southland Conference championship and a trip to the playoffs.
After Bearkat starter Rhett Bomar was lost for the season last week in a win over Nicholls State, the offense is once again in Hicks’ hands. The stakes aren’t as high this time around. The Bearkats’ postseason hopes pretty much ended when McNeese State beat Stephen F. Austin last week to clinch the SLC’s automatic playoff berth.

Here's the Thursday story in the Hammond Daily Star ...
Southeastern coach Mike Lucas understands the mind set out there. You go 2-7, and many fans simply tune you out.
But Lucas is hoping that won't happen for his Lions as they return home for a season-ending two-game homestand, which begins with Saturday's Homecoming clash against Sam Houston State in Strawberry Stadium.
Lucas is just looking for a little love for his Lions from the home crowd, hoping there are more of them who are smart enough to see beyond his team's record to what looks like a promising future than there are fans who will blow them off and stay home.
“I guess that's the natural response,” Lucas admits. “It would certainly help if we were 7-2 instead of 2-7. And that time will come. Ask the other coaches in the league. They know the kind of kids that we've recruited and the kind of kids we're playing with.
“I was talking with the Texas State coaches and they were really looking at the youth and the athleticism of what we're playing with and they were very impressed.”
“Scary” is the word Texas State head coach Brad Wright used to describe what the Lions are building. And Sam Houston head coach Todd Whitten, who like Lucas was a coordinator under legendary Bearkats coach Ron Randleman, also has gone beyond the record and sees a better football team than that 2-7 record suggests.
“It really is deceptive,” Whitten said. “These guys have really played some good ballgames. They had a chance to beat UCA, had them right down to the wire there, and Central Ark was able to pull it out. Same thing a week ago with Texas State. They had a back and forth game for 3-plus quarters and lost it at the end."

We lose another heartbreaker, but considering all the injuries and numbers of freshmen we're playing, I'm more than happy with the effort we're putting forth. Give us another good recruiting class and a good year in the weight room and we'll be in the mix.

Ding, ding, ding.
When you can't punch it in from the one-foot line, you have problems - also terrible that Jay Lucas was not involved on the 4th down play. How he's gained over 1,000 yards (averaging over 7 yards per carry) with 10 TDs and a patch-work line that is pretty weak on the strength side is a credit to our coaching staff and to Jay.
Why he wasn't involved when we put the ball on the SHSU 2 will be bantered about for the next few days. When Gilbert was stuffed, you could feel the air being sucked out of the building.
RL, we've talked about this before about the potential in the next couple of years. We were really flat in the first half on the offensive side and gave up too many big plays (of course, give SHSU credit for making them).
One game left on a disappointing 2007 season, but already looking forward to 2008 when all of our freshmen have a year in the weight room and we can continue rebuilding with another solid recruiting class.

We also have several key injuries. Besides Bomar...we were missing a senior offenslive lineman and a senior defensive lineman. Darnell Jones who did play has also been nursing an injury so he probably wasn't at 100%. Also I've heard All-American Blake Martin went out with an injury during the game...but don't know the details.

Just about everybody has injuries this time of year but I don't know how many teams are playing as many as eight true freshmen on defense, with as many as six on the field at one time. Five of our top nine tacklers tonight were true freshmen, two were sophomores and none were seniors. And we're starting two true freshmen on offense. I think we only have six halfway healthy offensive linemen and I know two are playing on guts. The fact that we've been competitive four of the last five weeks is really amazing when you think about it.

I'm sure our coaching staff has a very good reason for not involving Jay on that last series, but it's a shame our best player didn't get at least one crack at the endzone from inside the two-yardline.
It's been a gut-wrenching season to say the least, with all the close games, but we knew coming in we would be young and/or inexperienced and that's proven true with our inability to finish. But I'm tickled to death we're still showing fight and resolve and didn't throw in the towel after the McNeese game. We just need to "keep on sawin' wood" as the old expression goes. We'll have a pretty strong house built before too long.

Recap from Huntsville Item...
Bearkats stuff Southeastern 20-16
SHSU defense comes up with key goal-line stand in fourth quarter
By Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor
HAMMOND, La. — For the second straight week the Bearkats were tested, and once again they dug in and answered the challenge Saturday night.
It was a dramatic setting: less than 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter and Southeastern Louisiana staring at a potential game-winning touchdown. The Lions had the ball first-and-goal at the Sam Houston State 2-yard line.
Four consecutive runs, four consecutive stuffs by the Kats.
